Chapter 5

Exactly four weeks after I walked out of my marriage, the elevator doors opened to the chaotic lunch rush of the Ground Safety Training Center.

I stepped into the crowded lobby and stopped dead in my tracks.

Lucas stood by the main reception desk. Beside him, Ben shivered in a thin cotton t-shirt. The building's air conditioning blasted from the overhead vents, making my son's small shoulders tremble.

Ben spotted me instantly. He sprinted across the polished tile floor, his sneakers squeaking loudly against the marble. He threw his arms around my knees, nearly knocking me off balance.

"Mommy!" Ben wailed, burying his face into my uniform slacks. "I want my old mommy to come home. I don't want Sophie anymore."

Conversations died around us. Dozens of flight instructors, trainees, and ground crew members stopped mid-sentence.

Lucas strolled toward us, his hands casually tucked into the pockets of his tailored slacks. He pasted a sympathetic, long-suffering smile on his face, playing directly to the audience of my coworkers.

"He's been crying for you all morning, Grace," Lucas announced. His voice carried across the open space, designed to reach the back row of the crowd. "I know you need some time away to find yourself, but abandoning your family like this is tearing him apart. Just come home."

My hands grasped Ben's arms. His skin felt like ice. His lips carried a faint blue tint.

"Where is your autumn jacket, bud?" I asked, quickly unbuttoning my navy uniform blazer.

"Daddy said I didn't need it," Ben sniffled. He wiped his nose with the back of his hand, leaving a shiny streak across his cheek. "He said we had to hurry to find you."

"Listen to me, Ben," I said, keeping my tone steady. "Look at my eyes."

He blinked up at me, heavy tears clinging to his eyelashes.

"I live in a new apartment now," I told him, smoothing a stray curl from his forehead. "It has giant windows that look out over the whole city. You can see the airplanes flying by. This weekend, you are going to come stay with me."

"Not our house?" he whimpered, his lower lip trembling.

"No. I am never going back to that house," I said clearly. "But I will always be your mother. You will always have me."

The panic in Ben's chest seemed to loosen. He took a deep, shuddering breath and nodded, gripping the fabric of my blazer.

Lucas dropped his fake smile. The muscles in his jaw tightened. His attempt to use a freezing child to force a public breakdown had failed completely.

He closed the distance between us, stepping uncomfortably close.

"Stop filling his head with nonsense," Lucas hissed. He dropped his volume so only I could hear, leaning in so close I caught the scent of stale mint gum on his breath. "You are coming back today. If you don't, I will use this little stunt at the custody hearing to prove you're an unstable, absentee mother."

"You dressed a four-year-old in a summer shirt in November just to win a point," I replied flatly. "Don't lecture me on parenting."

"You are pushing me, Grace," he threatened.

"I am stating facts."

"I am trying to keep this family together!" Lucas raised his voice again, trying to reclaim the sympathy of the room. "I forgave you for walking out. I am giving you a chance to fix this."

"There is nothing to fix," I said. "We are done."

"You think you can just erase me?" Lucas demanded. "I pay the mortgage. I provide the stability. You fly around the world playing waitress in the sky. You think a judge will give a kid to a woman who is never in the same time zone twice in one week?"

"I transferred to ground training a month ago," I corrected him. "My schedule is Monday to Friday. Nine to five. Perfect for primary custody."

Lucas's eyes widened slightly. He hadn't known about the schedule change. He recovered quickly, his face flushing a dark red.

"You're a spiteful woman," he spat. "Sophie is trying her best, and you just want to punish everyone."

"Sophie is a music teacher who can't boil pasta," I said. "And you are a coward."

Lucas reached out, his fingers hooking aggressively toward my upper arm. "You are coming with me right now."

A paper cup suddenly wedged itself between Lucas's reaching hand and my shoulder.

"Black, two sugars," Ethan said.

I turned. Ethan stood right beside me, holding out a steaming cup of coffee.

I took the cup. "Thank you."

Ethan stepped forward. He smoothly inserted his broad shoulders between me and Lucas, acting as a solid physical barrier.

"Excuse me," Lucas snapped, glaring at the audio engineer. "This is a private family conversation. Back off."

"This is a corporate lobby," Ethan corrected. His voice remained calm, devoid of intimidation, which only made it more authoritative. "And you are blocking the exit route. Move along."

"Who the hell are you?" Lucas demanded, looking Ethan up and down.

"I'm the guy who is about to call building security," Ethan said. He gestured toward the two guards stationed by the metal detectors. "Unless you want to explain to them why you're grabbing our staff."

"I am her husband," Lucas shot back.

"You're a trespasser," Ethan replied. "Five seconds before I wave them over."

The lobby went dead silent. The surrounding instructors stopped pretending to check their phones. Every eye locked onto the confrontation.

Lucas opened his mouth, then snapped it shut. He glanced nervously at the security desk. The guards were already watching him, their hands resting near their radios.

"You think you can hide behind your coworkers?" Lucas sneered at me over Ethan's shoulder. "You can't avoid reality forever, Grace. The judge will see right through you."

I handed my coffee to Ethan.

I pulled the stapled packet out and stepped around Ethan.

I slammed the heavy document flat against the center of Lucas's chest.

The sharp smack of paper hitting his expensive silk tie echoed in the quiet lobby. Lucas reflexively brought his hands up to catch the packet before it hit the floor, his fingers clutching the edges.

"What is this?" he demanded, staring at the legal seal stamped on the front page.

"The finalized asset division," I said. I projected my voice so every person in the lobby could hear the words clearly. "Since you decided to bring your mistress to our son's parent-teacher conference, you should understand something."

Lucas froze. The color drained from his face entirely.

"I am leaving you nothing," I told him. "See you in court."

I didn't wait for his response.

I reached out, wrapped my fingers around Ethan's wrist, and pulled him toward the elevator bank.

We stepped into the empty car.

The metal doors began to slide shut, framing Lucas as he stood paralyzed in the center of the lobby, staring down at the first page of the document.

Ethan stared at my hand gripping his wrist, then reached out and pressed the emergency stop button.
