Chapter 3

On Wednesday of my first week at the Ground Safety Training Center, a paper cup slid across the breakroom table and bumped against my knuckles.

"Black, two sugars," a male voice said.

"Drink up. You look like you've been staring at that manual for three hours."

"I'm Ethan," he said, extending a hand. "I design the audio for the company's safety demonstrations."

I shook his hand. "Grace. senior flight attendant, transitioning to ground instructor."

"I know." Ethan tapped the side of his own cup. "I listened to your evacuation drill today. You handled that rowdy group of trainees perfectly."

"They need to understand the stakes," I replied. "A water landing isn't a theoretical exercise."

"Your pitch control is flawless," Ethan continued. "You don't yell, but everyone stops talking the second you open your mouth. It's rare."

"Panic spreads faster than fire," I said, closing my manual. "A calm voice anchors the cabin."

"Exactly." He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table. "That anchoring quality is exactly what I need for a side project."

I raised an eyebrow. "I don't do commercial voiceovers."

"It's not a commercial. I'm launching a children's bedtime story podcast."

My fingers tightened around the edge of my book.

"I've auditioned thirty actors," Ethan said, pulling a business card from his pocket. "They all sound like cartoon characters. They try too hard to be cute. I need someone who sounds safe. Like a mother."

The word twisted a knot in my stomach. Sophie's high, fake voice echoed in my head, reciting the lines I had written for my own son.

I pushed the card back toward him. "I'm not interested."

"It pays well. And you can record on your own schedule."

"My schedule is full," I said flatly.

Ethan didn't push. He just slid the card back across the table, stopping inches from my phone. "Just keep it, Grace. In case you change your mind."

My phone vibrated against the table. The screen lit up with a message from Mrs. Higgins, the lead teacher for Ben's kindergarten class.

Grace, I know you're usually traveling, but Ben is in the nurse's office. He ate a strawberry wafer and broke out in a mild rash.

We don't have his antihistamine, the text continued.

I typed a rapid reply. I'll be there in twenty minutes.

Another text popped up. Also, today was Little Astronaut dress-up day. Lucas dropped him off in a stained t-shirt. Is everything okay at home?

The shared family calendar on my phone still showed the red block I had created a month ago: Ben's Space Day + Pack Allergy Meds. Lucas had access to it on his phone, his tablet, and his work computer. Every night before a flight, I used to lay out Ben's themed outfits on his dresser.

Not anymore.

"Marcus, I need to leave for the afternoon," I said, standing in the doorway.

Marcus looked up from his monitors. "Family emergency?"

"Medical issue at my son's school."

"Go," Marcus said, waving a hand. "We'll cover your afternoon session. Everything all right?"

"It will be," I said, turning away.

"You told me you packed his backpack, Sophie," Lucas hissed, his voice echoing off the tiled walls.

"I packed his lunch!" Sophie shot back, twisting the strap of her leather handbag. "I didn't know he needed a specific pill for a snack he didn't even bring!"

"You're a kindergarten teacher," Lucas snapped. "You should know to check for allergies."

"I teach music, Lucas. I'm not his nanny."

"You were playing mother just fine last week," I said, stepping fully into the room.

Sophie jumped, her face draining of color.

Ben sat on the examination paper, kicking his small sneakers against the metal table legs. Red splotches dotted his neck. Tears streaked his cheeks.

Lucas spun around. His rigid shoulders instantly dropped.

"Finally," Lucas said, waving a hand toward the school nurse's desk. "Go sign the liability forms. Mrs. Higgins is asking a million questions about his medical history."

"Mommy," Ben whimpered, reaching out.

I gently caught his small hands, inspecting the rash on his wrists. "Does it itch, sweetie?"

He nodded, sniffing loudly. "I didn't get to be an astronaut today."

"I know, baby. I'm sorry."

I turned to the school nurse beside Mrs. Higgins. "Are his breathing and circulation normal?"

"Yes. The reaction is limited to hives," she said. "I am following his written allergy plan. The epinephrine auto-injector is ready, and we will call 911 if any breathing, throat, or multi-system symptoms appear."

I signed the incident acknowledgment and stayed while she monitored him.

"Thank you, Grace," Mrs. Higgins said, lowering her voice. "I hated to bother you on a flight day, but the emergency contact list..."

"Update the list, please," I told her, handing back the clipboard. "Keep me as a parent and emergency contact. List Lucas as the first weekday contact while the temporary schedule is reviewed, and replace my old address."

Mrs. Higgins blinked. "Excuse me?"

"I no longer live at the family residence," I said. "The school needs accurate contacts for both homes."

Sophie gasped softly from the corner of the room.

Lucas stepped forward, his jaw tight. "Grace, don't do this here."

"Do what?" I asked, turning to face him. "Inform the school of a change of address?"

"You're making a scene."

"I'm updating a file." I looked back at Ben. "The medicine will make you sleepy, bud. Be good for your dad."

Fingers clamped around my bicep, jerking me to a halt.

"What the hell was that?" Lucas demanded, stepping into my path.

"You're playing a dangerous game, Grace," he sneered, his face flushing red. "You let our son suffer an allergic reaction just to score points? Just to make Sophie look bad?"

I let out a short, dry laugh. "Make her look bad? You did that yourselves."

"You always pack his meds!"

"I resigned from that job," I reminded him. "The alert has been on your shared calendar for thirty days. You didn't check it, and your new girlfriend couldn't be bothered to open a plastic pillbox."

"He's four years old!" Lucas shouted, drawing a startled look from a passing teacher. "You don't abandon your child to punish me."

"I didn't abandon him. I drove across town to fix your mistake." I stepped closer, forcing Lucas to tilt his chin down to meet my eyes. "I am done being the safety net for your incompetence."

"You sent me divorce papers," he hissed, dropping his voice. "You cut the utilities. Now you're weaponizing Ben's health?"

"I am forcing you to be a father."

"You think you can just walk away and dictate the terms?"

"I just did."

"Sophie is terrified of you right now," Lucas said, shifting his tactic to play the victim. "She was just trying to help out."

"If she wants to play house, she gets to handle the emergency room trips too."

The heat hit my face, but my hands were freezing.

The line rang twice.

"Ethan speaking."

"It's Grace," I said, gripping the phone tight. "Send me the address for the studio."
