Chapter 3

Ainsley arrived at the penthouse on a Tuesday afternoon.

I was in the study, sorting through the last of my personal files. Nathan was in the living room. I heard the elevator chime. Heard her voice, high and trembling.

"Nathan? Are you here?"

I didn't move. Just listened.

"I'm here," Nathan said. His voice was careful. "What's wrong?"

"I—" Her voice broke. A practiced crack. "I didn't know if I should come. But I couldn't stay in my apartment. Not after—"

"After what?"

Silence. The kind that pulls. The kind designed to make someone ask again.

"Ainsley. After what?"

"I don't want to cause problems," she whispered. "I know Violeta doesn't like me. I've tried so hard to—"

"What happened?"

I stood. Walked to the doorway. Leaned against the frame.

Ainsley was pressed into Nathan's side. Her face was pale. Her eyes were wide and wet. She looked up at him like a child seeking shelter.

"She's been so cold," Ainsley said. Her voice shook. "The way she looks at me. Like she—like she wants me gone. I'm scared, Nathan. I don't feel safe."

Nathan's jaw tightened. His hand moved to her shoulder.

I watched. Felt nothing. Just a distant curiosity, like observing an insect under glass.

"Hi, Ainsley," I said.

They both turned. Ainsley's eyes went wide. Nathan's face was unreadable.

"I'm making tea," I said. "Would you like some?"

Ainsley blinked. Her mouth opened. Closed.

"I—no. I should go."

"Stay," I said. I walked past them into the kitchen. Filled the kettle. Set it on the stove. "Chamomile or green?"

Silence behind me. Heavy. Confused.

"Violeta," Nathan said. His voice had an edge.

I turned. Looked at him. "Yes?"

He stared at me. Ainsley was still tucked against him, but her performance had stalled. She looked between us, searching for her cue.

"Ainsley said she doesn't feel safe," Nathan said.

"I heard," I said. The kettle started to hiss. "That must be difficult for her."

"You don't have anything to say about that?"

I pulled two mugs from the cabinet. "What would you like me to say?"

His eyes narrowed. "An explanation would be a start."

I poured hot water over the tea bags. The steam rose between us.

"I haven't threatened Ainsley," I said. My voice was calm. Factual. "I've barely spoken to her in three weeks. If she feels unsafe, that's unfortunate. But it has nothing to do with me."

Ainsley made a small sound. A wounded whimper.

I picked up my mug. Took a sip. The tea was too hot. I didn't react.

"I'm going back to work," I said. I walked past them both. Stopped at the study door. Looked back. "The tea's on the counter if you change your mind, Ainsley."

I closed the door.

I heard Nathan's voice. Low and urgent. I heard Ainsley crying.

I sat at my desk. Drank my tea. Checked my phone.

Four days.

They left an hour later. I heard the elevator chime. Heard the silence that followed.

Nathan didn't come to the study. I didn't go looking for him.

Margaret's summons arrived the next morning.

A text. Formal. Cold.

*Violeta. Lunch at the estate. Today. 1 PM. This is not optional.*

I stared at it for a long moment. Then I drove to Bellevue.

The Wheeler estate sat on five acres overlooking Lake Washington. Manicured lawns. Stone fountain. The kind of wealth that didn't need to announce itself.

I parked in the circular drive. A staff member opened the door before I reached it.

"Mrs. Wheeler is in the dining room," she said.

I followed her through the marble foyer. Past the portraits of Wheeler ancestors in oil and gilt frames. Into the dining room.

Margaret sat at the head of the table. Bone china. White linen. A single place setting across from her.

"Sit," she said.

I sat.

A staff member brought salad. Margaret waited until we were alone.

"Your behavior has become unacceptable," she said. Her voice was clipped. Precise. "You've ignored my calls. Missed family obligations. And now Ainsley tells me she's frightened of you."

I cut a piece of lettuce. Chewed. Swallowed.

"I haven't threatened Ainsley," I said.

"That's not what she says."

"Then she's lying."

Margaret's fork paused midair. "Excuse me?"

I looked at her. This woman who had told me I wasn't good enough. Who had sided with Ainsley at every turn. Who had raised a riding crop at her own son's birthday party and called me a baby killer in front of two hundred guests.

"Ainsley is lying," I said. "She always has. You've just never cared enough to notice."

Margaret's face went cold. "How dare you."

"I'm stating a fact."

"You will stop this behavior immediately," Margaret said. Her voice dropped to its most dangerous register. "You will attend family events. You will present yourself appropriately. And you will stop making Ainsley feel unwelcome in her own family."

I set my fork down. Folded my napkin. Stood.

"Thank you for the lunch, Margaret," I said.

Her eyes went wide. "We are not finished."

"I am," I said.

I walked out. Through the foyer. Past the portraits. Into the daylight.

I sat in my car. Pulled out my phone.

Dialed.

"Diane," I said when she answered. "Confirm the timeline."

"Four days," she said. "0400 hours. Queen Anne helipad."

"I'll be there," I said.

I hung up.

I drove back to Seattle.

The penthouse was empty when I arrived. Nathan was at the office. Or with Ainsley. I didn't care which.

I walked to the balcony. Looked out over the city.

Four days.

Then I would be gone.

And none of this would matter anymore.
