Chapter 4

Ainsley found Margaret in the estate study two days before the gala.

I wasn't there. I didn't hear it. But I know exactly how it happened.

Margaret was reviewing the seating chart. Crystal stemware. Gilt-edged place cards. Ainsley knocked softly on the doorframe.

"Mrs. Wheeler? Do you have a moment?"

Margaret looked up. Ainsley stepped inside. Her face was pale. Her hands twisted together.

"I need to tell you something," Ainsley whispered. "About Violeta."

Margaret set down her pen.

Ainsley's voice broke. "I didn't want to say anything. I know how much you've tried to help her fit into the family. But I can't keep quiet anymore."

"What is it?"

Ainsley's eyes filled. "The baby. The one she lost."

Margaret went still.

"She didn't lose it," Ainsley said. Her voice shook with perfect, practiced anguish. "She ended it. On purpose. Nathan told me she'd been to the doctor. That it was an accident. But I heard her on the phone with the clinic. She scheduled it herself. She killed your grandchild because she was angry at Nathan. Because she wanted to punish him."

Silence.

"Are you certain?" Margaret's voice was ice.

"I heard her," Ainsley whispered. "I'm so sorry. I should have told you sooner."

Margaret's face hardened into absolute certainty. "Thank you for telling me."

Ainsley left. Margaret sat alone in the study.

She believed every word.

The gala was Saturday night.

I wore a simple black dress. No jewelry except my wedding band. I arrived alone. Nathan was already there, standing near the terrace doors with a glass of scotch.

He looked at me. I looked past him.

Margaret's seating chart placed me at the far end of the main table. Farthest from Nathan. Farthest from Margaret. Surrounded by people I'd met once and never spoken to again.

I sat. Smiled when required. Ate nothing.

Two hundred guests filled the estate. Senators. CEOs. Old Seattle money in tailored suits and silk gowns. The kind of people who donated wings to hospitals and had their names engraved on museum walls.

Dinner was served in courses. Oysters. Duck. Some kind of cream sauce I didn't taste.

Margaret stood halfway through the main course.

The room went quiet. She held her wine glass. Her smile was thin and cold.

"Thank you all for joining me tonight," she said. Her voice carried. Practiced. Theatrical. "Seventy years is a milestone. And I'm grateful to celebrate it with the people who matter most."

Polite applause.

"But before we continue," Margaret said, "there's something I need to address. Something that affects this family deeply."

The applause died. Confusion rippled through the room.

Margaret's eyes found mine across the table.

"My daughter-in-law," she said, "has been part of this family for several years now. And in that time, I have tried—truly tried—to welcome her. To guide her. To help her understand what it means to carry the Wheeler name."

My hands went still on my lap.

"But recently," Margaret continued, "I learned something that I cannot, in good conscience, keep silent about."

Two hundred faces turned toward me.

"Violeta was pregnant," Margaret said. Her voice was steady. Clear. "She carried my grandchild. Nathan's child. And she chose—deliberately—to end that life."

Gasps spread through the room like fire.

I stood. My chair scraped against the floor.

"That's not true," I said.

Margaret's smile didn't waver. "Sit down, Violeta."

"I said that's not true."

"Sit. Down."

I took a step toward her. Two household staff members moved from the walls. Large men in dark suits. They closed in on either side of me.

"Mrs. Wheeler," one of them said quietly. "Please sit."

I looked at him. At the hand on my arm. At the two hundred faces watching.

They pushed me back into the chair. Held me there. One hand on each shoulder.

Margaret continued as if nothing had happened.

"She murdered my grandchild," Margaret said. Her voice was calm. Matter-of-fact. Like she was discussing the weather. "Out of spite. Out of cruelty. Because she wanted to hurt this family."

I tried to stand again. The hands tightened.

"Let me go," I said.

No one moved.

Margaret lifted something from beside her chair. A riding crop. Leather handle. Polished wood shaft. A Wheeler family heirloom, she'd told me once. Used for discipline. For correction.

She walked toward me.

The room was silent. Two hundred people. Not one voice raised in protest.

Nathan stood. Finally. His face was white.

"Mother—"

"Sit down, Nathan," Margaret said.

He didn't sit. But he didn't move toward me either.

Margaret raised the crop.

Then Ainsley screamed.

She was standing near the terrace. Her hand flew to her throat. Her face went red. She gasped. Choked.

"I can't breathe," she wheezed. "Nathan—I can't—"

Nathan moved. Not toward me. Toward her.

He caught her as she collapsed. Her body convulsed in his arms.

"Someone call an ambulance," Nathan shouted. "Now!"

Chaos erupted. Guests stood. Chairs scraped. Voices overlapped.

Margaret's crop swung wide. Missed me. Hit the man holding my left shoulder instead.

His grip loosened.

I stood. Wrenched free.

Margaret turned back to me. Fury blazing in her eyes.

But I was already walking. Through the dining room. Past the guests. Past Nathan cradling Ainsley on the floor.

I walked out the front door. Down the stone steps. Across the drive.

I got in my car. My hands were steady on the wheel.

I drove back to Seattle.

The penthouse was dark and silent.

I stood on the balcony. Pulled out my phone.

Dialed.

"Diane," I said. "Move the timeline up. I need extraction tonight."

A pause. "Confirmed. Helicopter will be at Queen Anne helipad in ninety minutes. Bring nothing."

"Understood," I said.

I hung up.

I looked out over the city one last time.

Then I walked inside and started erasing myself from Nathan Wheeler's world.
