Chapter 2

I moved through the penthouse like I was already gone.

Five days after the hospital. My hand still throbbed under the cast. I used it as an excuse. Can't attend the Wheeler Foundation gala. Can't make Sunday brunch at the estate. Can't respond to Margaret's text asking why I missed the charity luncheon.

I didn't explain. I just didn't show up.

Nathan noticed on day three.

"My mother called," he said. We were in the kitchen. Morning light came through the windows. He was drinking coffee. I was transferring files to an encrypted drive with my good hand.

"Okay," I said.

"She said you haven't responded to her messages."

"I've been busy."

He set his mug down. "Busy with what?"

I looked at him. His face was sharp in the morning light. Handsome. Distant. Like a photograph of someone I used to know.

"Things," I said.

He waited for more. I didn't give it to him.

He left for the office ten minutes later. The door closed. I went back to the files.

That afternoon, I drove to a storage facility in Bellevue. Diane had arranged it. Climate-controlled unit. Keypad access. No paper trail.

I brought three boxes. Research notebooks from graduate school. My grandmother's pearl earrings in their velvet case. A photograph I'd kept hidden in the back of my closet — me at twenty-three, standing in front of the Naval Research Lab in Monterey, holding the acceptance letter. I was smiling. I looked like someone who believed the world was fair.

I locked the unit and drove back to Seattle.

Nathan was home when I arrived. He was standing in the living room with his phone in his hand. He looked up when I walked in.

"Where were you?"

"Out," I said.

"Out where?"

I set my purse on the console table. "Just running errands."

"What errands?"

I looked at him. Really looked. The tightness around his mouth. The way his fingers gripped the phone.

He was waiting for me to fight.

"Nothing important," I said.

I walked past him to the bedroom. He didn't follow.

The next morning, Margaret texted again. *Violeta, this is unacceptable. You represent the Wheeler name. Your absence reflects poorly on Nathan. Call me immediately.*

I deleted it.

She called an hour later. I let it ring.

She called again at noon. I turned my phone off.

Nathan came home early that night. He found me in the study. I was cataloging files. Digital and physical. Everything that mattered was already copied, encrypted, or moved.

"My mother is upset," he said.

I didn't look up. "I'm sorry to hear that."

"She thinks you're avoiding her."

"I am."

He went still. That particular stillness he did when he was furious but didn't want to show it.

"Why?"

I closed the laptop. Turned to face him. "Because I don't want to see her."

"Violeta—"

"I'm tired, Nathan." My voice was flat. Not angry. Not sad. Just empty. "I don't want to go to brunches. I don't want to smile for your mother's friends. I don't want to pretend anymore."

"Pretend what?"

I almost laughed. "That any of this matters."

His jaw tightened. "You're my wife."

"Yes," I said. "I am."

He stared at me. Waiting for the rest. The accusation. The tears. The performance he'd come to expect.

I gave him nothing.

He left the study. I heard his office door close down the hall.

I went back to the files.

The next day, he made his move.

I was in the kitchen. Mid-morning. The house was quiet. Nathan had left his phone on the counter. Screen unlocked. Face-up.

I saw it when I walked past.

A text thread. Open. Recent.

*Chloe Bennett.*

I stopped. Looked at the phone.

The messages were right there. Flirtatious. Familiar.

*Can't wait to see you tonight.*

*Wear the dress I like.*

*You always know how to make me smile.*

I stood there. The phone glowed on the granite. The messages sat there like bait.

I heard Nathan in the hallway. Just outside the kitchen. Close enough to hear. Close enough to watch.

He was waiting.

I picked up the phone.

Read the messages. All of them. Scrolled up. Saw the pattern. The same performance he'd staged before. The same manufactured provocation.

I set the phone back down. Exactly where I found it.

I walked to my study.

I closed the door.

I heard Nathan in the kitchen. Footsteps. A pause. Then nothing.

I sat at my desk. My hand ached under the cast. I opened my laptop. Checked my secure email.

Diane had sent an update. *Six days. Transport confirmed. 0400 departure. Helicopter extraction from Queen Anne helipad. Bring nothing that can be traced.*

I replied. *Understood.*

I closed the laptop.

I sat in the silence.

The door opened. Nathan stood in the frame. His face was unreadable.

"You saw it," he said.

Not a question. A statement.

"Yes," I said.

"And?"

I looked at him. This man I'd married eight times. This man I'd loved until it hollowed me out.

"And nothing," I said.

His face changed. Confusion. Then something darker. Something that looked almost like fear.

"What does that mean?"

I turned back to my desk. "It means I don't care, Nathan."

The silence stretched. Heavy. Suffocating.

"You don't care," he repeated. His voice was flat.

"No," I said. "I really don't."

He stood there for a long time. I didn't look at him. I heard him breathe. Heard the shift of his weight.

Then he left.

The door closed.

I sat alone in the study.

Six days.

I felt nothing but the countdown.
