Chapter 2

I sat on the edge of our king-sized bed, turning the tiny camera between my fingers. It was barely larger than a button, with a lens no bigger than a pinhead. The salesman had assured me it was undetectable, with battery life lasting weeks and wireless transmission to the secure server I'd set up. Perfect for my needs.

Three days had passed since I'd returned from the hospital, since I'd discovered their monstrous plan and taken my first steps toward reclaiming my life. The termination and insemination procedures had been quick and clinical. I'd felt nothing during either—my emotions had calcified into something hard and impenetrable. Now, I was pregnant with my own child, while Ryan and Victoria believed their plan was proceeding perfectly.

I surveyed our bedroom with a clinical eye, identifying the optimal placement points. The crown molding above our bed. The bookshelf facing our sitting area. The decorative vase on the dresser. I worked methodically, my movements precise as I installed each device, testing the angles on my encrypted phone.

"What exactly are you looking for?" I whispered to myself, the question echoing in the empty room. But I knew. Evidence. Ammunition. The truth they thought I'd never discover.

The nursery was next. Ryan had insisted we begin preparations immediately, his eagerness now sickening in retrospect. I placed cameras in the stuffed elephant on the shelf, in the decorative wall sconce, in the baby monitor they wouldn't think to disable. Every angle covered. Every word they might speak captured.

I had just finished when I heard the front door open, followed by Ryan's voice and another's—a female voice with the cultured, slightly nasal tone I'd recognize anywhere. Victoria. I quickly gathered my supplies and slipped into our bedroom, my heart hammering against my ribs as I listened to their footsteps ascending the stairs.

"She's probably resting," Ryan was saying, his voice lowered. "The doctor said she needs to take it easy."

I slid into bed, arranging the covers to suggest I'd been there all afternoon, and picked up a pregnancy book from the nightstand. The bedroom door opened moments later.

"Sarah?" Ryan's concern sounded genuine. It was his most convincing performance. "Victoria stopped by to see how you're doing."

I looked up, forcing a smile that didn't reach my eyes. "That's so thoughtful."

Victoria glided into the room, elegant in a cream cashmere sweater and tailored slacks. Her honey-blonde hair fell in perfect waves around her shoulders. She carried a gift bag with tissue paper spilling from the top.

"I couldn't wait to see you," she said, her smile brilliant and false. "How are you feeling?"

"Tired," I admitted, which was true. "But good."

She sat on the edge of my bed—my bed—and reached for my hand. I forced myself not to flinch.

"You should be resting more," she said, her tone dripping with patronizing concern. "This early stage is so critical."

I nodded, watching as her eyes flicked to my still-flat abdomen. There was something possessive in her gaze that sent chills down my spine. My hidden cameras would be capturing every nuance of her expression, every subtle glance between her and Ryan.

"We won't stay long," Ryan assured me, hovering by the door. "Victoria just wanted to drop off a little something."

She handed me the bag. Inside was an expensive organic tea set specially blended for pregnant women. "To help with morning sickness," she explained. "And to keep you hydrated. It's so important for the baby."

Not your baby, I thought fiercely. Never your baby.

"Thank you," I murmured instead. "It's lovely."

They didn't stay long, but as they were leaving, I heard them pause in the hallway outside the nursery. The door was ajar, and their whispers carried clearly.

"It's perfect," Victoria was saying. "Just how I imagined it for our future heir."

"Soon," Ryan replied, his voice low and intimate. "Everything we've planned for."

I closed my eyes, letting their words wash over me. Every syllable recorded. Every confession preserved.

---

Two weeks later, Victoria hosted a women's brunch at her elegant townhouse. I attended, playing my role as the fragile, grateful wife. The other women—wives of Ryan's business associates—cooed over my early pregnancy while Victoria held court.

"I've been designing the most beautiful nursery," she announced, champagne flute in hand. "For when I babysit, of course."

The women nodded indulgently, but I caught the knowing glances some exchanged. Did they suspect something? Or was Victoria's obsession with my child simply that obvious?

"It's in the east wing," she continued, "with the most exquisite hand-painted mural of an enchanted forest. The crib is being custom-made in Italy—solid mahogany with platinum accents."

I sipped my water, memorizing every detail she shared, my phone recording in my purse. The date, the plans, her proprietary tone—all evidence for the day I would need it.

"Sarah will need all the help she can get," Victoria added with a sympathetic smile in my direction. "First-time motherhood can be so overwhelming."

I smiled back, a placid mask hiding the storm beneath. "How fortunate I am," I replied softly, "to have someone so... invested... in my child's future."

Our eyes locked, and for a fleeting moment, I wondered if she could sense the steel beneath my submission. But her smile never faltered, secure in her belief that I remained blind to their deception.

Little did she know, I was building my case piece by piece, day by day. And when the time came, I would be ready to reclaim what was mine.
