Chapter 1

I stood in our walk-in closet, methodically sorting through Pierce's suits for dry cleaning. The morning light filtered through the blinds, casting a warm glow across the rows of designer clothes—a perfect metaphor for our perfect life. Or so I thought.

My fingers brushed against something crumpled in the pocket of his charcoal Armani jacket. Probably just a receipt, I thought, pulling it out with the casual indifference of a wife who'd done this thousands of times before.

But it wasn't a receipt.

"Westlake Elementary School presents Children's Day Celebration! Dear Parents of Luka James..."

My heart stuttered. Luka James? Who was Luka James?

I smoothed out the wrinkled paper with trembling fingers, reading further: "We cordially invite parents to join us for our annual Children's Day festivities on Saturday, May 15th. Your child has worked hard preparing for the special performance..."

The room tilted slightly. I gripped the closet doorframe, my knuckles turning white against the polished wood.

"This notice is addressed to Luka James's parents. If you cannot attend, please notify the school office by May 10th."

Parents. Plural. Not parent-teacher conference or parent-teacher night. Parents of Luka James.

I read it again. And again. The words didn't change.

"Luka James." I whispered the name aloud, testing how it felt on my tongue. Foreign. Wrong. Impossible.

My husband had no brothers or sisters. No nieces or nephews named Luka. No cousins that I knew of with children this age.

Which meant...

I couldn't finish the thought. Couldn't let my mind go there. But my hands moved of their own accord, checking the date on the notice. Yesterday. The event was yesterday.

---

The next morning, I stood outside Westlake Elementary School, my heart hammering against my ribs. I'd spent the night in a daze, the notice burning a hole in my purse. I hadn't confronted Pierce. Hadn't asked him who Luka James was or why there was a school notice in his jacket pocket.

Instead, I'd come here, to see for myself.

"I'm Mrs. James," I told the receptionist, my voice surprisingly steady. "I'm here about the Children's Day celebration yesterday. My husband mentioned it, but I had a scheduling conflict."

The young woman smiled brightly. "Oh yes, Children's Day! It was wonderful. Are you Luka's mother? He was so cute in the performance!"

The floor dropped out from under me. I managed a nod, not trusting my voice.

"He looked so happy when his parents arrived," she continued, oblivious to my internal collapse. "They're such a lovely family."

I wandered into the main hall, where photos from yesterday's event were already displayed. And there they were.

Pierce—my husband, the father of my child—with his arm around a stunning brunette. A little boy, maybe six years old, stood between them, beaming at the camera.

Luka James.

I watched, frozen, as Pierce arrived with them now, in real time. He kissed the woman—Lilith, according to the name tag on her blouse—on the cheek with casual intimacy. He ruffled Luka's hair exactly the way he ruffled Skyler's.

"Did you see my picture, Daddy?" Luka tugged at Pierce's sleeve, pointing to a display.

"Let's see, buddy." Pierce lifted him up—the same gesture he'd used with Skyler just last week—so Luka could see the photos.

My husband. My Pierce. Being someone else's daddy.

---

"Katie." My voice broke on her name as she opened her door.

"Emilia? What happened?" Katie's sharp legal mind kicked in instantly, taking in my disheveled appearance and red-rimmed eyes.

"He has another child." The words tasted like ash in my mouth. "Another family."

Katie didn't look surprised. She simply stepped aside to let me in, then returned with a bottle of wine and two glasses.

"I need you to tell me everything," she said, her voice gentle but firm as she handed me a glass.

The wine burned going down, but not as much as the truth.

"I found a school notice. For a child named Luka James." I pulled it from my purse, smoothing it flat on her coffee table. "Then I went to the school today..."

I couldn't continue. Katie took the notice, scanning it quickly before looking up at me with fierce determination.

"I've always known he was too smooth," she said, her lawyer instincts kicking in. "Too perfect. There were always little things that didn't add up."

"You never said anything," I whispered.

"I didn't have proof." She reached for her laptop. "But I do now."

As Katie began typing furiously, her expression hardened into the one I'd seen her wear in courtrooms—focused, calculating, unstoppable.

"We're going to need more than just this notice," she said, already formulating a plan. "We need evidence. Dates. Times. Financial records."

I nodded, feeling something cold and resolute settle in my chest where my heart used to be.

"Where do we start?" I asked.

Katie's smile was sharp as a blade. "We start by finding out exactly who Luka James is to your husband."
