My Twin Brother Planted Drugs in My Locker—Then I Broke the Record He Tried to Steal

My twin brother framed me with banned pills after I unearthed his old doping scandal. My father knew the truth but let me fall, so I turned over evidence and walked away from the Carter legacy. Chapter 1

The first thing my twin brother did before senior-year tryouts was tap my knuckles three times, our old promise that the Carter twins would leave high school with every record still ours.

Then Noah Blake walked onto the pool deck.

Ethan's worst enemy took lane four, beat my brother's three-year school record on his first timed set, and looked straight at me when the scoreboard flashed.

Dad texted one sentence: Stay away from Blake.

Coach made that impossible by assigning Noah to the elite group I led.

I expected arrogance; instead, outside the locker room, I watched him brace one hand against the wall because his fingers would not stop shaking.

I knew that kind of hiding.

Six months ago, my own shoulder had been damaged badly enough that a doctor warned another season could cost me swimming for good.

Noah caught me rubbing it and said, “You're compensating, Carter. And it's getting worse.”

So I did the one thing my father had forbidden.

I told my brother's enemy to meet me in lane six at five the next morning.

Ethan tapped his knuckles against mine three times, the ritual sharp against the steady hum of the pool filters.

"Carter twins finish what they start," he said.

I bumped his fist back. "Always."

From the first row of aluminum bleachers, our father lifted a camera toward us. Daniel Carter had spent the last decade turning every race into a piece of evidence for college recruiters. He filmed starts, turns, underwater kicks, even the way Ethan and I climbed out of the pool after a bad set.

"Make it look easy, Maya," he called.

I rolled my right shoulder before stepping toward the blocks. Pain pinched deep under the joint, quick enough that I could pretend it had not happened. I had been pretending for six months.

Coach Lena Ruiz blew her whistle before I could climb onto the block. "Hold up. We have a transfer joining the elite group."

A guy in a charcoal hoodie stepped through the double doors.

Noah Blake.

Ethan's smile disappeared.

Two years earlier, Noah had beaten him by eleven hundredths of a second at the National Junior Championships. Twenty minutes after the final, an anonymous report accused Noah of using a prohibited stimulant. A medical review turned into a disqualification, Ethan moved up to first place, and every Carter family dinner afterward treated the gold medal like proof that justice had been served.

Noah had vanished from the circuit before anyone asked harder questions.

Now he walked onto our deck carrying one duffel bag and the same quiet expression from the old race footage.

"Noah is cleared to compete and train," Coach Ruiz said, cutting off the whispers spreading through the team. "He is also joining our morning elite sessions. Maya, Lane Six."

Ethan stepped closer to me. "No."

Coach Ruiz raised one eyebrow. "That was not a vote, Captain."

My phone buzzed inside the waterproof pocket of my swim bag. I already knew who it was before I checked.

Daniel: Stay away from Blake.

I looked toward the bleachers. My father had lowered the camera. His jaw was locked so tightly I could see the muscle moving from twenty yards away.

"You heard Dad," Ethan muttered. "Keep him out of our lane."

"Coach put him there."

"Then make him want another one."

Noah walked past us without acknowledging the conversation. He stripped off his hoodie, pulled on his cap, and climbed onto the block beside mine.

"You always let your family pick your lanes?" he asked.

"You always make enemies before warm-up?"

"Only when they introduce themselves first."

Coach Ruiz called for a controlled hundred-yard butterfly. I bent forward, fingers curling over the edge of the block. At the buzzer, I launched.

The first twenty-five felt clean. On the second lap, the familiar stab hit my right shoulder. I shortened the catch and forced the arm through anyway. Daniel's camera tracked me from the bleachers. If I stopped, he would ask why. If I told the truth, he would remind me scouts were already comparing scholarship times.

I drove into the final turn.

Pain tore down my upper arm.

My rhythm broke.

Noah, swimming freestyle in the next lane, reached the wall a fraction before I did. Instead of pushing off, he grabbed the gutter and looked across the lane rope.

"Your elbow is collapsing."

I sucked in air. "Watch your own stroke."

"I am. Yours is louder."

"Maya! Again!" Daniel shouted from the bleachers.

Coach Ruiz checked her stopwatch. "Take thirty seconds."

I set my feet against the wall.

Noah caught my wrist before I pushed off. Not hard. Just enough to stop me.

"If you keep entering like that, you are going to turn inflammation into a tear," he said quietly.

I jerked my arm free. "Do not touch me."

"Then listen. Drop your elbow two inches and stop crossing center line."

Ethan surfaced in the lane on my other side. "Get your hands off my sister."

Noah released me immediately. "Done."

Ethan pulled himself onto the deck. "You do not coach her. You do not talk to her unless Ruiz tells you to. And you definitely do not pretend you know anything about clean competition."

The last sentence landed harder than the others.

Noah's face did not change. "Funny. I remember being clean enough to beat you."

Ethan took a step forward.

I climbed out between them before Coach Ruiz had to intervene. "Both of you, stop."

Daniel came down from the bleachers, camera hanging against his chest. He ignored Noah completely and pointed at my shoulder.

"Why did your stroke shorten on lap three?"

"Bad entry."

"Then fix it and swim again."

Coach Ruiz glanced at me. "Maya already hit the target split."

"One clean time does not get a scholarship," Daniel replied.

Noah picked up his towel. "Neither does a wrecked shoulder."

Daniel finally looked at him. "You have had enough influence on this family for one lifetime."

The deck went still.

Noah met his stare. "Then maybe stop giving me reasons to come back."

He walked toward the locker room.

Practice ended twenty minutes later. Ethan left with Daniel, both of them talking in low, angry voices near the parking lot. I stayed behind to ice my shoulder, pretending I had not noticed Noah waiting by Lane Six.

"Five tomorrow morning," he said.

I looked up. "For what?"

"Twenty minutes. I show you how to protect the joint without losing speed. You show me whether your family taught you anything useful about starts."

"Why would I help you?"

"Because I am not the only swimmer on this deck hiding an injury."

My stomach tightened.

He had noticed too much in one practice.

"And before you ask," Noah added, pulling his hoodie over his head, "I am not interested in whatever story your brother told you about me. I brought the paperwork."

"What paperwork?"

He zipped his bag. "The medical clearance that existed before someone reported me for doping."

I stared at him.

Noah pushed open the locker-room door, then paused.

"Five o'clock, Carter. If you want to keep believing your brother, at least make him survive the dates."

The door shut behind him.

My phone buzzed again.

Ethan: Do not meet with him alone.

A second message followed from Daniel.

If Blake talks about Nationals, walk away.

I read both messages twice.

Neither of them asked what Noah had actually said.

At 4:37 the next morning, I turned off my alarm before it could wake anyone else in the house.
