Chapter 2

Axel crumpled the sonogram in his fist. The paper, a fragile testament to a nascent life, was crushed without a second thought. He tossed the small, wrinkled ball into a nearby trash can with perfect aim.

His voice was flat, devoid of any emotion.

"Schedule the procedure."

Eleanor had just reached the doorway of the waiting lounge. The two words hit her like a physical blow, freezing the blood in her veins. She lunged forward, her hands grabbing the sleeve of his expensive suit jacket.

"No," she whispered, the sound raw and desperate. "Axel, please."

She was on her knees before she even realized it, clinging to him without a shred of dignity. "I'll sign anything. A waiver for child support, for inheritance rights, anything. I'll disappear. Just let me keep the baby. Please."

He looked down at her, at the pathetic, begging creature at his feet. A flash of profound irritation crossed his features. He yanked his arm free from her grasp, smoothing the wrinkled fabric of his sleeve with a flick of his fingers.

"Women from the Vaughn family are experts at using children as leverage," he said, his voice dripping with contempt. "I won't make my father's mistake."

The words plunged her into an icy abyss. This wasn't just about her. It was about a dirty, generational hatred she was only now beginning to understand. She slowly pushed herself up, her back straightening. The tears stopped.

A broken, bitter laugh escaped her lips. "If it's a bastard," she shot back, her voice trembling with newfound rage, "it can only be your bastard. You never let anyone else get near me."

His breath hitched for a fraction of a second. He stepped forward, his thumb pressing hard against her lips, grinding them against her teeth until she could taste blood. Then he shoved her away.

She took a deep breath, the air burning her lungs. She lifted her chin, her eyes meeting his without flinching. "I'm ending this," she said, her voice eerily calm. "This... twisted thing between us. It's over."

Axel looked at her as if she'd just told the funniest joke in the world. He closed the distance between them in a single, predatory stride, his shadow swallowing her whole.

He slammed his hands on the wall on either side of her head, trapping her. The clean, sharp scent of cedar from his cologne invaded her senses, suffocating her.

He leaned in, his lips brushing against her ear. His voice was a low, demonic whisper.

"The game ends when I say it ends."

Dr. Evans stood awkwardly to the side, staring intently at the floor, pretending he was invisible. The tension was a living thing in the room.

Finally, Axel straightened up. He turned to the doctor, his voice once again cold and commanding. "Prepare the operating room. Immediately."

A nurse approached Eleanor, her hand outstretched in a gesture of support. Eleanor recoiled as if from a flame.

"I have legs," she said, her voice like ice.

She turned and walked towards the surgical prep area, her spine ramrod straight. Her unnatural composure, her defiant stillness, made Axel's brow furrow into a deep line.

A nurse handed her a blue surgical gown. She took it, her knuckles white from the force of her grip.

In the small changing room, she stripped off the gray dress of shame. She looked at her reflection in the mirror-at her pale face, her bruised neck, her flat stomach. The despair in her eyes slowly faded, replaced by a vast, hollow emptiness. A dead calm.

The red light above the operating room door glowed.

Axel stood at the far end of the sterile white corridor. He lit a cigarette, the flare of the lighter briefly illuminating his grim, chiseled features.

He brought the cigarette to his lips, inhaling deeply. Blue-white smoke curled around his head, obscuring his face.

But in the stark, unforgiving light of the clinic, he couldn't hide the slight, almost imperceptible tremor in the hand that held the cigarette.

I was driving through a rainstorm in upstate New York, pushing my old Volvo to the limit just to pick up a Dior gown for my wife, Catarina. She needed it for a gala tonight, where she planned to spend the evening standing next to the man she actually loved, Atticus Deleon. The truck hit me head-on, crossing the center line and sending my car rolling down an embankment in a shriek of twisted metal and shattered glass. As the steering column crushed my chest, my brain didn't see a white light; it was pried open by a digital tsunami, flooding my mind with the "Quantum Archive"-billions of data points on surgery, high-frequency trading, and combat. I woke up in the ICU with three broken ribs and a concussion, but the only thing waiting for me was a screaming voicemail from my wife's assistant. "Jorden, where the hell are you? Catarina has been waiting for thirty minutes! You are so incompetent it's actually impressive." There was no "Are you okay?" or "Are you alive?"-only fury over a ruined dress and a missing tie. While I was being resuscitated, my wife was on Instagram, singing "Endless Love" with Atticus and laughing at my "tantrum." She even called the family lawyer to freeze my credit cards, wanting to make sure I couldn't even buy a coffee without her permission. For three years, I had been the "useful husband," the doormat who apologized whenever she stepped on my toes. But the accident had overwritten my desperation with cold, hard logic, and I realized I had almost died for a woman who viewed me as a liability with a negative return on investment. When Catarina finally stormed into my hospital room to demand an apology for ruining her night, I didn't look at her with the usual puppy-dog eyes. I looked at her with ice in my veins and handed her a manila envelope I had drafted myself. "Sign the divorce papers, Ms. Evans. I'm done being your canary."
