Chapter 3

The world was a blur of cold metal and blinding light. Anesthesia flowed into her vein, a cold tide pulling her under. The last thing Eleanor saw was the sterile, unforgiving glare of the surgical lamp above her.

Out in the corridor, Axel crushed his third cigarette into the sand-filled ashtray. He pulled out his phone, attempting to read an urgent email, but the words swam before his eyes. He couldn't focus.

The red light above the door went out.

Dr. Evans emerged, pulling down his surgical mask. "The procedure was successful, Mr. Cochran," he reported, his voice carefully neutral. "But she's quite weak. She needs rest."

Axel didn't respond. He pushed past the doctor and strode into the recovery room.

Eleanor lay on the bed, small and still, looking like a broken doll. The crisp white sheets were a stark contrast to her deathly pale skin.

He walked to her bedside. Her lips, usually a defiant red, were colorless. A sharp, unfamiliar pain stabbed him in the chest. He ignored it.

Her eyelids fluttered open. Her gaze was vacant, unfocused, until it landed on him. A flicker of awareness returned, and with it, pure instinct. She flinched, trying to shrink away to the far side of the bed.

The small, defensive movement instantly ignited his anger, extinguishing the strange pang of sympathy. He masked it with his usual cruelty. "Can't handle this much?" he sneered.

She didn't answer. She just looked at him with eyes that were utterly foreign, deadened. In that moment, she understood with chilling clarity: this man would never feel pity for her pain. The life that had been inside her was gone, and with it, the last, foolish ember of hope she'd held for him. All that remained was a cold, hard hatred.

Her dead-eyed stare unnerved him. He roughly pulled the blanket up to her chin, then turned away. "Do a full cardiac workup on her while you're at it," he bit out to Dr. Evans.

The doctor wheeled in an ECG machine. Eleanor remained motionless, a puppet for them to manipulate. The rhythmic beeping of the machine was the only sound in the room. She stared at the ceiling. He had taken everything. She owed him nothing now.

"Her heart is under considerable strain," Dr. Evans said later, handing Axel a prescription. "She needs complete rest and these medications."

Axel stood by the window, his back to her. "You'll stay in the penthouse for the next few days. You're not to go anywhere."

Her voice, when she finally spoke, was a raw, hoarse whisper. "We're even now."

He spun around. In two strides, he was looming over her, his hands gripping the bed rails. His eyes were wild, furious. "As long as the Vaughns owe my mother a life," he snarled, "we will never be even."

Eleanor closed her eyes, shutting him out. A single tear escaped, tracing a path through her hair and disappearing into the pillow.

With a frustrated growl, Axel ripped at his tie, loosening it. He barked at the nurse to watch her, then stormed out of the room, the oppressive weight of his presence lifting as the door slammed shut.

The nurse offered her a glass of warm water. Eleanor's fingers were like ice as she took it. "Thank you," she whispered.

Two hours later, she forced her weak body to move. She pulled the IV from her arm, the sting barely registering.

"Ma'am, you can't leave," the nurse said, rushing to her side.

Eleanor looked at her, her gaze cold and resolute. "I have the right to leave. If you try to stop me, I will call the police and report you for false imprisonment."

The nurse, stunned by her sudden, steely demeanor, hesitated. In that moment, Eleanor had already changed back into her clothes, grabbed her purse, and walked out of the room.

The December wind hit her like a knife as she stepped out of the clinic. She wrapped her thin coat tighter and hailed a yellow cab.

In the backseat, she pulled out her phone. The screen lit up with unread messages from her internship group at Cochran Enterprises. Her expression was grim.

She typed a curt resignation email to HR, then systematically left every work-related group chat.

Phone off. She leaned her head against the cold glass, watching the glittering towers of Manhattan recede.

The taxi crossed the Brooklyn Bridge, leaving the world of wealth and power behind. It drove into the grittier, older streets of Queens, stopping in front of a red-brick apartment building.

She paid the driver and stepped out, her feet crunching on a carpet of dead leaves. A dull ache throbbed in her lower abdomen with every step.

Her hands trembled as she fumbled for her keys, taking three tries to fit one into the lock. She pushed open the heavy security door.

The apartment was dark and smelled of stale cigarette smoke and whiskey.

She reached for the light switch. As her fingers found it, a dark shape lunged up from the sofa. A glass bottle shattered at her feet, and a shrill, venomous curse ripped through the darkness.

I was driving through a rainstorm in upstate New York, pushing my old Volvo to the limit just to pick up a Dior gown for my wife, Catarina. She needed it for a gala tonight, where she planned to spend the evening standing next to the man she actually loved, Atticus Deleon. The truck hit me head-on, crossing the center line and sending my car rolling down an embankment in a shriek of twisted metal and shattered glass. As the steering column crushed my chest, my brain didn't see a white light; it was pried open by a digital tsunami, flooding my mind with the "Quantum Archive"-billions of data points on surgery, high-frequency trading, and combat. I woke up in the ICU with three broken ribs and a concussion, but the only thing waiting for me was a screaming voicemail from my wife's assistant. "Jorden, where the hell are you? Catarina has been waiting for thirty minutes! You are so incompetent it's actually impressive." There was no "Are you okay?" or "Are you alive?"-only fury over a ruined dress and a missing tie. While I was being resuscitated, my wife was on Instagram, singing "Endless Love" with Atticus and laughing at my "tantrum." She even called the family lawyer to freeze my credit cards, wanting to make sure I couldn't even buy a coffee without her permission. For three years, I had been the "useful husband," the doormat who apologized whenever she stepped on my toes. But the accident had overwritten my desperation with cold, hard logic, and I realized I had almost died for a woman who viewed me as a liability with a negative return on investment. When Catarina finally stormed into my hospital room to demand an apology for ruining her night, I didn't look at her with the usual puppy-dog eyes. I looked at her with ice in my veins and handed her a manila envelope I had drafted myself. "Sign the divorce papers, Ms. Evans. I'm done being your canary."
