Chapter 3

Ethan delayed the divorce for three weeks.

He ignored Maya's formal petition, postponed mediation twice, and sent flowers to my mother's room. To everyone watching, he remained the devoted son-in-law.

But to me, he sent one-line commands.

Stop this.

Come home.

Cross is using you.

I replied only through my lawyer.

Meanwhile, Celeste appeared beside him everywhere. At the Hale Foundation gala, she wore a silver dress and held his arm while photographers shouted questions. At a hospital fundraiser, she leaned close enough for her lips to brush his ear. Society pages called her his "steadfast childhood confidante" while describing me as absent.

Maya sent me one of the articles.

He's baiting you.

Let him choke on the hook, I answered.

I moved between Crosswell and Damian's estate, spending every day with my mother and most nights behind the glass walls overlooking the Hudson. Damian never asked me to do anything for him. He gave me space, a driver, and quiet. Sometimes he joined me in bed. Sometimes we simply passed each other in the hall like two people honoring the careful wording of a dangerous agreement.

On the fourth week, Ethan finally agreed to meet at a private restaurant in Tribeca.

He arrived twenty minutes late with Celeste.

"This concerns our marriage," I said.

Celeste touched his sleeve. "I told Ethan I shouldn't come, but he's been under so much pressure."

"Then leave."

Her eyes filled. It was a talent.

Ethan pulled out her chair. "She’s my friend. You’re being too rude."

I looked at the man I had loved since I was twenty-four and felt something inside me finish dying.

"Sign the papers."

"No."

"Why? You don't want me."

His jaw flexed. "You're my wife."

I stood. "Not anymore. Maya will file for contested divorce tomorrow."

Ethan stood too. "If you walk out, don't expect me to protect you when Cross gets bored."

"You couldn't protect my mother for one night. I expect nothing from you."

Celeste lowered her gaze, hiding satisfaction behind her lashes.

A waiter stared. A phone lifted at the next table. I left before my control broke.

Outside, I found Maya waiting beneath the restaurant awning. I had asked her to come because I no longer trusted Ethan to respect a private boundary.

"How bad?" she asked.

"He brought Celeste."

"Of course he did."

We walked toward her car while rain misted the street.

"Are you really done?" she asked.

"I asked him to save my mother. He told me to stop being jealous. What part of me could go back after that?"

"The part that loved him for years."

I swallowed. "That part can grieve after the divorce."

"And Damian?"

"A contract."

Maya gave me a long look. "Contracts don't usually stare at women as if breathing depends on them."

"He wanted what Ethan had. That's different from wanting me."

Neither of us noticed the young man beside a parked motorcycle recording our conversation.

The video appeared online before midnight.

The clip began with Maya asking, Are you really done? It included my answer about my mother, my statement that I would grieve after the divorce, and enough of our conversation.

Within an hour, #SaveHerMotherNotYourMistress trended across social media.

People found Celeste's smiling hospital photograph. A nurse anonymously confirmed that her procedure had been elective. Someone leaked the time stamps showing my calls to Ethan. Hale Memorial's board demanded an explanation.

For the first time, the world did not call me jealous.

It called Ethan cruel.

He arrived at Damian's estate at two in the morning, pounding on the gate until security notified us. Damian was in the library with me, reading through Crosswell reports while I stared at the growing storm online.

"I can remove him," Damian said.

"No. Let him in."

Ethan entered the library soaked with rain and rage. His gaze moved from my bare feet to Damian's shirt around my shoulders.

"You planned this," he said.

"I didn't know anyone was recording."

"You humiliated me."

"The truth humiliated you."

He threw signed divorce papers onto the table.

"You wanted freedom? Take it." His voice dropped. "When Cross discards you, do not use my name to crawl back."

I picked up the papers. Every page bore his signature.

"Thank you."

That wounded him more than anger would have.

His eyes shifted to Damian. "You think you won?"

Damian remained seated, terrifyingly calm. "This was never a contest. Nora isn't property."

Ethan laughed bitterly. "Tell yourself that while being with her."

He left, leaving only silence behind.

The divorce became final ten days later. My mother cried when I told her, blaming herself until I held her face and made her listen.

"You did not break my marriage," I said. "You showed me it was already broken."

She touched my cheek. "And Mr. Cross?"

Before I could answer, a therapist entered to help her stand. I watched my mother grip the parallel bars and force her weakened legs to obey. Sweat gathered along her hairline. She took one step, then another, while I counted under my breath.

Damian arrived during the fifth step. He stayed near the door, silent, refusing to turn her recovery into a performance of his generosity. When she finally sat, exhausted, he offered her water.

"You are the man who stole my daughter," she said.

I nearly dropped the towel in my hands.

Damian met her gaze. "I am the man who gave her a bad contract. She is deciding whether I deserve anything beyond that."

My mother considered him for a long moment. "At least you know the decision is hers."

He nodded as solemnly as if she had addressed a board meeting.

"He saved you."

"That isn't what I asked."

I smiled faintly. "I don't know what he is yet."

After my mother's rehabilitation transfer, I moved fully into Damian's estate. Mrs. Ellis filled my room with fresh flowers. Damian cleared half the library shelves for my books. Neither gesture appeared in our contract.

Some evenings, we ate together and talked about everything except Ethan. Damian told me his mother had died when he was nine and his father had treated grief like a weakness to be disciplined. I told him how my mother had worked two jobs after my father left.

Other nights, warmth vanished. We reached for each other because the contract made it simple and because our feelings made simplicity impossible. He could be gentle enough to undo me or distant enough to make me remember that I had promised only a year.

A month after the divorce, I became sick over breakfast.

At first, I blamed stress. Then the smell of coffee made me run from the room three mornings in a row.

I bought a test at a pharmacy twenty miles away.

Two pink lines appeared before I finished reading the instructions.

I sat on the bathroom floor, one hand over my mouth.

The doctor confirmed I was six weeks pregnant.

Six weeks placed conception in a narrow, merciless window. I had slept with Ethan once, ten days before my mother's crisis, on our anniversary. I had slept with Damian repeatedly afterward.

The child could belong to either man.

When I returned to the estate, Damian was waiting in the foyer.

His eyes moved over my face. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing."

For the first time since entering his house, I lied to him without hesitation.

That night, I lay awake beside Damian, listening to him breathe.

One hand rested protectively over my stomach.

The other covered my mouth so he would not hear me cry.
