Chapter 3

The executive elevator lobby on the top floor was so quiet she could hear only her own breathing. The silence was absolute, pressing in from all sides, broken only by the soft hum of the ventilation system and the distant, muffled sounds of the city far below.

Darcy stepped out, her black heels sinking soundlessly into the thick black carpet. The padding was so dense it swallowed every sound, making her footsteps feel almost weightless. The décor here was brutally cold. Black-gray metal intersecting with high-end marble, not a single decorative flourish in sight. No family photos on the walls, no potted plants, no soft lighting. Just hard edges, expensive materials, and the suffocating weight of a territory claimed and defended by an apex predator. Every surface was sharp, every line precise, as if the space itself had been designed to intimidate. The whole space radiated absolute ownership.

This wasn't an office. This was a beast's den, built of steel and capital.

Darcy stopped in front of the massive black walnut doors. The wood was dark and rich, polished to a mirror sheen, the grain barely visible beneath the deep finish. She didn't hesitate. She raised her hand and knocked twice, the sound sharp and crisp against the heavy silence.

"Come in."

Asher Kingston's voice came through, low and cold, utterly flat. No warmth. No curiosity. Just the absolute certainty of a man who expected doors to open the moment he spoke.

Darcy pushed the doors open. The hinges moved without a sound, perfectly engineered, perfectly silent.

The office was enormous, commanding the best view in the entire building. A sweeping panorama of the city's skyline, skyscrapers jutting against the pale morning light like jagged teeth against the horizon. The windows stretched from floor to ceiling, offering an unobstructed view of the sprawling metropolis below. Asher stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows, his back to the door, tall and broad-shouldered, one hand in his pocket, the other holding a black coffee. Steam rose from the cup, curling upward and dissolving into the vast emptiness of the room.

He didn't turn immediately at the sound of her footsteps. But the air in the room, calm just a moment ago, tightened the instant she crossed the threshold. The faint cedar scent that had been barely detectable suddenly thickened, growing noticeably heavier in the space around her. It was as if the very atmosphere recognized her presence and responded to it.

At the same time, the old scar on Darcy's left shoulder, the one that had been dormant for eight years, sent another wave of dull, burning pain through her skin. It wasn't as sharp as the night before, but it was unmistakable. A reminder that something in her body recognized something in his.

Darcy's brow twitched almost imperceptibly. She forced her expression back to neutral, pressing down the unease coiling in her chest.

Again.

"Mr. Kingston."

Darcy stopped three meters from his desk, a safe, social distance. She held the folder she'd just used to destroy the PR director, spine straight, amber eyes clear and composed. Her heart was beating faster than she wanted it to, but she kept her breathing even, her face unreadable. She had spent eight years learning how to look calm when everything inside her was screaming.

Asher turned slowly.

Sunlight caught the sharp angles of his chiseled face, refracting through the faint, unextinguished gold still smoldering in his eyes. His features were severe, almost harsh, the kind of face that belonged on ancient coins or carved into stone. He looked down at her from his full height, those cold gray irises hiding a current deep enough to drown in. His gaze swept over her, not like a man looking at a woman, but like a wolf sizing up something that had wandered into his territory.

"Sit."

He walked to his desk and sat, sliding a printed contract across the polished surface. The paper was heavy, expensive, the kind that held a watermark and cost more than most people's weekly groceries.

"Temporary appointment as independent risk lead for the billion-dollar merger. During the project, you may bypass the PR department and access all core materials related to this acquisition."

"Direct report to me."

His tone was flat, businesslike, but his eyes pinned her like a blade, searching for every micro-expression, every flicker of hesitation. He didn't blink. Didn't look away. The weight of that stare was enough to make most people crumble.

He was testing her.

Darcy knew exactly how this looked. From Asher's perspective, she was full of questions. A low-level actuarial analyst who had kept her head down for a full year. Why did she have risk control capabilities far beyond her position? And why was she so skilled at hiding herself? Every move she made, every piece of data she'd pulled, every calculation she'd run, it all pointed to someone who was far more than she appeared to be.

But this man wasn't pressing her about her past. He wasn't demanding answers. He was offering her something instead.

What did he want?

"Generous terms."

Darcy stepped forward and picked up the contract. She didn't sit. She stood at the edge of his desk, flipping through the pages with quick, practiced efficiency. Her eyes moved over the dense legal text, parsing clauses and fine print at a speed that would make a lawyer's head spin. She caught every nuance, every carefully worded clause, every hidden implication buried in the legalese.

"But Mr. Kingston, nothing in this world comes free. Your PR director was just dragged out of here. Now you're handing this much power to a newly promoted junior. Aren't you worried I'm a plant from one of your competitors?"

"A plant?"

Asher's mouth curved into a cold, predatory smile. He leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his long legs, every inch the apex predator surveying his domain. The movement was unhurried, deliberate, the way a wolf stretches before it takes down its prey.

"If you were working for the opposition, you'd have sold Kingston's core data a hundred times over by now. You could have walked out of here with enough leverage to bankrupt this entire group. Instead, you spent a year buried in PR, sorting paperwork for a bunch of incompetents, drinking break-room coffee and keeping your head down. That's not a spy. That's someone who's hiding from something, and I don't care what it is."

He didn't stand. He just watched her from across the wide desk, his gaze fixed on her.

"I don't care what you're running from."

Darcy's fingers paused on the contract.

"As long as you're standing on Kingston's side now."

"You need a place where you can stand on your own merit. I need someone who doesn't answer to the old board. Mutual benefit."

Darcy looked up at him for two seconds. She didn't answer immediately.

She lowered her head and continued flipping through the pages.

When she reached the final page, her hand stopped.

An additional security clause sat at the very bottom.

[Core project personnel must activate security location permissions and accept real-time location monitoring through Kingston's high-level protection system.]

Darcy stared at that line for two seconds. The implication was clear. They wanted to track her. They wanted to know where she was at all times, who she met with, what she did outside of work hours. It was a leash disguised as security.

Then she picked up the pen from his desk.

Swipe.

She crossed out the entire clause in one clean stroke. The line was sharp, definitive, leaving no room for interpretation.

"Explanation." Asher's voice was flat, but the weight behind it was unmistakable. He wasn't angry, yet. But the air around him had shifted, grown heavier.

Darcy's fingertip pressed against the pen, the line she'd drawn cutting cleanly through the security tracking clause. Her voice was calm and steady.

"What I sell to Kingston is my working hours. Not myself."

She lifted her head and met his eyes directly.

"What I do after work, who I see. That's outside your authority, no matter how broad your permissions. You don't own my private life, and I won't sign anything that says otherwise."

She slid the document back across the smooth desk.

"Working hours and risk data, you can access those whenever you want." Darcy's tone was calm but unyielding. "My personal schedule isn't covered by the salary Kingston pays me."

Asher looked down at that glaring red line. The office was so quiet she could hear the ticking of the clock on the wall. After a long moment, he slowly lifted his eyes, a deep, dark gray, unreadable.

"No one has ever cut my clauses."

"Then I'm afraid, starting today, someone has." Darcy's voice was flat. Her lashes didn't even flutter.

The Alpha presence in the air thickened, pressing down with suffocating weight. The temperature in the room seemed to drop. But Darcy stood quietly at the desk, her gaze clear, no hint of retreat in her posture. She had faced worse than an angry Alpha in a boardroom.

Asher looked at the hard edges in her eyes. Instead of anger, a low laugh escaped him, barely a sound, but carrying an edge of danger and something else. Something almost like fascination. His eyes traced the line of her jaw, the set of her shoulders, the unwavering steadiness of her gaze.

He uncapped his pen and signed his name directly beneath her amendment.

"Fine."

Asher capped the pen, his voice low and cold.

"Your desk moves to this floor. I need my core project lead within my line of sight."

Darcy met his gaze without flinching. The air between them crackled with tension, but she refused to back down.

"I want a private office on this floor. Non-work contact, keep your distance."

Asher rounded the wide desk and stopped two paces in front of her. He looked down at her from his full height, the gold in his pupils rising slowly to the surface. His voice was quiet, but absolute.

"Fine. Agreed."

Darcy's fingertips traced the edge of the document. She picked up the pen and signed her name on the final page, then pushed it back toward him. The sound of the paper sliding across the desk was loud in the silence.

"Pleasure doing business, Mr. Kingston."

She turned toward the door. But two steps out, the old scar on her left shoulder flared without warning, a sharp, burning pain that stopped her mid-stride. It wasn't as intense as the night before, but it was there, a reminder that something between them was far from settled.

Behind her, the cedar scent of the top-tier Alpha was thick and hot. She turned around and met his eyes, composed in posture, but with dark gold already surging beneath the surface.

"Alpha Lord. Your breathing's uneven." The corner of Darcy's mouth lifted slightly.

Asher didn't look away. Instead, he stepped half a pace closer, his presence lethal and magnetic, his voice dropping low and rough.

"Then don't stand there pointing it out."

Darcy raised an eyebrow. "Is that a warning?"

"A suggestion." His gaze locked onto hers. "Before I change my mind."

Darcy looked at the gold flickering in his eyes. She gave a slight nod, turned sharply, and walked out of the office.

The dead silence of the corridor closed around her again.

Darcy pressed a hand to the still-burning scar on her left shoulder and let out a long, slow breath.

Inside.

Asher still stood behind his desk, his palm pressed against the edge of the table. Only when the faint scent of cedar and agave had completely faded from the air did the gold in his pupils slowly recede.

A raw, primal thought, possessive and consuming, crashed into his mind for the first time.

Mine.
