Chapter 4

"Out of Control Former Design Assistant Steals Maison Vallois Archives."

The white letters burned against the black broadcast monitor. A ticker beneath them carried the timestamp and the authorization line: Released by Adrien Vallois, CEO, 8:42 p.m.

Theo stared at the screen. He did not take the microphone or correct the lie. He adjusted the velvet lapel I had tailored and turned toward the stage entrance.

I pulled out my phone and began recording.

"Stop filming," Theo said.

"I am preserving evidence of a defamatory corporate statement."

I panned from the headline to the transport crate at my feet, capturing the white number forty-two and the sealed lid. Then I aimed the camera at the security guard.

"Show the receipt you signed."

He glanced toward Adrien. "Madame, I should not be involved in a family dispute."

"You became involved when you removed my pass and witnessed my property inventory. Hold up the receipt."

The guard unfolded the paper. His blue signature appeared beneath the list of twelve leather folios. I zoomed in, then tilted the lens toward the green light on his body camera.

"State your name and confirm the recording is continuous," I said.

His shoulders sagged. "Gérard Blanc. Security supervisor. The camera has been running since I entered the staging area."

I ended my recording and sent the file to Romain before anyone could seize the phone.

Sabine folded her arms. "Adrien controls the press office, the venue, and the investors. One little video will not save you."

"It does not need to save me tonight. It only needs to survive you."

She stepped between me and the loading doors. "Those folios belong to the house."

"Then explain why your stolen copy came from my private bag and why the originals are listed in a court-stamped marital inventory."

Her eyes flicked toward the guard's body camera. She moved aside.

The opening music thundered through the walls. The first model walked. Applause rolled from the main hall while a lie about me filled every press screen backstage.

Adrien appeared at the end of the corridor. He had seen the headline go live and expected me to break. Instead, he found me fastening the tamper seal on the crate.

"You are not leaving with that," he said.

"Your security supervisor verified every item."

"I can revoke his authority."

"You cannot revoke a timestamp."

He reached for the crate handle. Gérard took one uncertain step forward, caught between his employer and the evidence on his chest.

I raised my voice. "Touch the seal, Adrien, and I will call the police from the press line. Every reporter outside will photograph you interfering with inventoried property."

The backstage traffic slowed. A dresser stopped beside a rack. Two makeup artists looked over. Adrien noticed them and lowered his hand.

"You planned this," he said quietly. "The inventory. The lawyer. You came here intending to humiliate us."

"I filed the inventory because you moved my private archives without permission last week. I still came tonight hoping you would put my name where it belonged."

"The show needed a cleaner story."

"So you made me the thief in the story I wrote."

A stage assistant rushed over and whispered that three buyers were asking why the technical archive was unavailable for the post-show presentation. Adrien's expression tightened. Without the folios, his team could display the garments, but they could not answer manufacturing questions or authorize reproductions.

"Leave the books until morning," he said. "We will resolve this privately."

"You published the accusation publicly."

Theo came closer, keeping his voice low. "Mom, the finale is in six minutes. If the buyers learn the technical sheets are gone, they will blame me."

"The sheets are not gone. They are with their owner."

"You are punishing me for one interview."

"You called Sabine your creative mother while wearing a jacket I made. That was not one careless sentence. It was a decision."

His face hardened. "Then do not expect me to defend you when Dad files the theft complaint."

The final thread tying me to the Vallois stage snapped without drama. I gripped the crate handle.

"I no longer expect you to defend me."

Gérard opened the loading door. Cold night air swept into the corridor, carrying the noise of traffic from the avenue. I pulled the crate over the threshold. Behind me, Adrien ordered someone to lock my company accounts and revoke my building access. Sabine told the press team to repeat the phrase former assistant until every outlet used it.

I did not turn around.

Romain called before I reached the waiting car.

"I have your video," he said. "The press release is defamatory, but the urgent problem is the archive. Adrien has already filed a claim asking the court to freeze the folios. Bring them straight to my office. Do not go home."

"What did he allege?"

"Corporate theft and emotional instability. He attached an affidavit from Theo."

For one second, the streetlights blurred. Then I opened the rear door of the car and guided the crate inside.

"Request an emergency hearing," I said.

"I already did. The duty judge will connect before midnight. We need physical proof that predates Sabine's copies."

I looked through the transparent lid at the worn corner of Folio Seven. The cotton paper inside carried a watermark no photocopier could invent.

"You will have it," I told him.

As the car pulled away, the Vallois runway lights flashed across the glass behind me. My phone filled with alerts repeating Adrien's headline. Beneath them sat Romain's secure message: Emergency review accepted. Evidence deadline: 11:45 p.m.

I rested my palm on the sealed crate.

Before the car reached Romain's office, I uploaded the original video to three encrypted locations and emailed Gérard a formal request to preserve his body-camera file. He replied with two words: Copy secured. The message mattered more than his apology could have. Adrien could revoke a badge, fire an employee, or bury a press release under another lie. He could not erase evidence that had already left his building.

They had stolen my credit. Now they would have to prove the work without me.
