They Removed My Name from the Paris Runway Chapter 1

My name vanished from the Paris couture program three minutes before the lights came up.

I had drawn all forty-seven looks, stitched my twelve-stroke comet into every lining, and spent nineteen years making Maison Vallois look like my husband's genius.

Adrien watched an assistant tape Sabine Moreau's name over mine and told security I no longer belonged backstage.

Then our seventeen-year-old son stepped beneath the cameras in the coat I had fitted on him at dawn.

Theo called Sabine the creative mother who had taught him beauty.

He said I had never understood fashion or him.

I did not interrupt the interview.

I opened the private cabinet listed in my marriage inventory, removed twelve black folios, and made security sign for every one.

By midnight, I was sitting across from Nia Diop, whose struggling label had eighteen days to earn a Milan slot.

Adrien thought he had kept the brand and erased the invisible wife.

He had kept the lights, the debt, and a mistress who could not draw the back of a dress.

“Put those folios down, Camille, or I will tell Theo you are destroying his future.”

"Take her pass." Adrien's voice cut through the backstage chaos, sharp and flat.

I stared at the glossy program in my hands. My fingers traced the thick white sticker slapped over page four. Beneath it, the original text read: Camille Laurent, Lead Design and Construction. The sticker read: Sabine Moreau, Creative Director.

A heavy hand clamped onto my shoulder. The security guard yanked the lanyard from my neck. The plastic badge snapped against my collarbone.

"Adrien," I said, my tone dangerously steady. "What is this?"

My husband of eighteen years adjusted his silk tie, refusing to meet my eyes. "Operations staff don't belong on the creative wall, Camille. We discussed the restructuring."

"We discussed bringing in a marketing consultant," I fired back, shoving the defaced program toward his chest. "We did not discuss erasing my name. We mortgaged my mother's Lyon apartment for three hundred eighty thousand euros to build this brand. Eighteen years of my life. Forty-seven garments on those racks tonight. You are giving my work to her?"

"Sabine brings the investors," Adrien replied, his tone entirely business. "She brings the capital we need to go global. The board wants a fresh face. You are forty-two, Camille. Sabine is twenty-eight."

"You told me Vallois was on the door, but Laurent was in every stitch," I reminded him. The words tasted like copper.

"That was a decade ago. Grow up." Adrien signaled to a lighting technician across the room. "Escort Madame Vallois to the VIP seating. Keep her out of the staging area."

The guard shoved me forward. I dug my heels into the concrete floor.

"Don't touch me," I snapped.

A microphone whined in the distance. Ten yards away, our son stood under a blinding ring light. Theo wore the midnight velvet blazer I spent three nights tailoring to fit his uneven shoulders. I recognized the silver thread I used to reinforce the buttonholes.

A reporter thrust a recorder toward him. "Theo, your debut runway is stunning. The industry is calling you a prodigy. Who guided your vision for this collection?"

Theo smiled, a perfect replica of his father's charming grin. He gestured to the blonde woman standing next to him. Sabine.

"Sabine is my creative mother," Theo announced, loud enough for the backstage sound system to catch every syllable. "She taught me everything. Before her, I was just fumbling in the dark. She showed me how to translate emotion into fabric."

A cold weight settled in my stomach. Twelve years. I guided his small hands over his first sewing machine. I taught him how to draft a pattern from scratch, how to bias-cut silk so it draped like water. I stayed up until dawn fixing his ruined hems. Now, he erased me with a single sentence.

"Theo," I called out, taking a step toward the cameras.

Adrien grabbed my elbow, his grip bruising. "Shut up. Do you want to embarrass him?"

"He is lying on camera," I hissed, pulling my arm free. "I drafted that jacket. I bled on the muslin for this collection."

"And Sabine is selling it," Adrien countered. "Fashion is an illusion, Camille. You handle the reality, she handles the fantasy. Know your place."

"My place is on that stage."

"Your place is in the basement."

Sabine raised her hand to wave at the cameras. The flashbulbs caught the gold thimble gleaming on her index finger.

My gold thimble.

The one engraved with C.L. 2008, a gift from my late mother on the day I opened my first studio. Sabine flaunted it like a trophy, tapping it against Theo's lapel as she laughed at a joke the reporter made.

"You gave her my mother's thimble," I said, my voice dropping to a whisper.

"She needed a prop for the photoshoot," Adrien muttered, stepping into my line of sight to block my view of our son. "It fits her better anyway. Theo understands the game. Sabine has two million followers. She tags him, he becomes a star. Don't make a scene and ruin his night. Go home."

The automated voice echoed through the overhead speakers. "Three minutes to showtime. All models to the lineup."

I turned my back on Adrien. I walked straight toward the steel lockers bolted against the far wall.

The guard who took my pass stepped in my path, crossing his thick arms. "Madame, you need to leave the area."

"Move," I told him. I pulled a folded legal document from my blazer pocket and held it up to his face. "This is a court-stamped marital asset inventory. I filed it this morning. Everything in locker forty-two belongs strictly to me. Interfere, and my lawyer will have your job, your pension, and your savings before the first model walks down that runway."

The guard hesitated. He glanced over his shoulder at Adrien, who was busy arguing with a stage manager about the music cue. The guard stepped aside.

I punched in the code. My birth year. The metal door swung open with a harsh squeak.

Inside sat twelve black leather sketchbooks.

The raw DNA of tonight's forty-seven garments. The proof of every stitch, every cut, every original idea Sabine just claimed as her own. They contained the initial sketches, the fabric swatches, the mathematical equations for the draping. Each cover bore my embossed initials.

I pulled them out, stacking them heavily in my arms. The leather felt cool against my skin. These books were my leverage. Without them, Sabine couldn't prove she designed a single button. Without them, Adrien couldn't replicate the collection for mass production.

"Sign this," I demanded, shoving the asset inventory list and a pen at the guard.

"What is it?" he stammered.

"Acknowledge I am removing my personal property. Sign it, or I call the police for attempted theft of intellectual property."

He scribbled his name on the bottom line, his hand shaking.

I shoved the signed paper back into my pocket. The stack of sketchbooks pressed against my chest. I turned to leave through the loading dock doors.

"What are you doing?"

Adrien's hand slammed against the locker door, missing my fingers by an inch. The loud bang made the guard jump. Adrien's composure finally cracked. His face flushed red, a vein pulsing at his temple.

Overhead, the speakers blared. "Sixty seconds to showtime. Clear the wings."

I looked at the man I married. He looked like a stranger.

"Taking my eighteen years back," I said.

Adrien lunged forward, blocking my exit. His tall frame trapped me against the steel lockers. He stared at the black leather books in my arms, realizing exactly what I held. The foundation of his empire.

"You leave those here," Adrien demanded, reaching for the top book.

I twisted away, keeping the stack out of his reach. "Try to take them, and I will scream until every reporter out there comes running."

He froze. The cameras were only fifty feet away.

Adrien leaned in close. He lowered his head, his mouth hovering right next to my ear. His voice dropped to a vicious, ugly whisper that cut straight through the countdown echoing around us.

"Put down those twelve sketchbooks, or I'll make sure Theo sees you ruin his future right now."
