Chapter 4

"Time is up, Mara," Adrian stated, adjusting his suit jacket.

My finger bypassed the glowing red left side of the screen and pressed firmly against the cold blue right.

CONTINUE DELETION.

A sharp chime signaled the system's acceptance. The countdown vanished from the glass display.

Adrian let out a short exhale. The rigid line of his shoulders dropped a fraction of an inch. "Finally. A rational decision."

"I am acting as the attending physician," I told him, keeping my eyes locked on the monitor. "I maintain intraoperative custody of all minor patients during a neural wipe."

I didn't lift my hand from the console. Instead, my left thumb rolled the black audit chip directly into the secondary port.

"Initiating continuous legal backup," the automated voice announced.

Adrian stepped closer, his brow furrowing. "What backup? I ordered a clean slate."

"Federal mandate," I lied smoothly, pulling up the hidden command console. "Section four of the cognitive preservation act. All pediatric modifications require a shadow drive."

He didn't know the law. He only knew the code.

My fingers flew across the keyboard. I wasn't erasing the files. I was burying them.

I dragged Index 44 straight into Partition One. One hundred and eighty-four rainy afternoons. The mustard-yellow umbrella. The cinnamon candies. I locked the entire cluster behind a biometric firewall.

"The progress bar is crawling," Adrian complained, tapping the glass of the primary monitor. "Why is it compiling data instead of dumping it?"

"Neural architecture takes time to untangle," I replied, my voice completely flat.

I grabbed the second cluster. The white anemone bookmark. The three hundred and twelve nights of olfactory anchoring. I shoved the entire recovery block into Partition Two. I encrypted it with my own medical license number.

They wanted the memories gone. I just built a locked door and pocketed the only key.

The shadow drive demanded a reason for each protected cluster. I entered Pediatric continuity risk for Noah and Post-traumatic identity risk for Adrian. Both were defensible diagnoses. Both would survive an audit if the board ever saw the untouched log.

Then a fourth directory appeared in the purge queue: Primary caregiver recognition.

It contained Noah's map of my face, voice, gait, and scent. Adrian had selected the entire directory for deletion with one digital signature.

"You included facial recognition," I said.

"A clean transition cannot leave conflicting caregiver prompts."

"He will wake up and see a stranger where his mother stood."

Adrian's expression hardened. "He will see his doctor. That is all he needs you to be today."

I copied the directory into Partition One and sealed it beside the rain files. If Noah lost me, it would not be because I had failed to leave him a road back.

"Pulse completion at thirty percent," the terminal stated.

Noah sat perfectly still in his chair. A thin silver wire connected his tablet to the neural patch behind his right ear. His chest rose and fell in a slow, unnatural rhythm.

"He looks pale," I said, my fingers freezing over the keys.

"He is calibrating," Adrian dismissed. He pulled out his phone, his thumbs moving rapidly across the screen. "You are dragging this out. Gideon can see your keystrokes. He says you are isolating data blocks."

"I am securing the structural integrity of your son's hippocampus."

"You are clinging to the past." Adrian glared at me through the reflection of the glass. "Override her manual inputs, Gideon. Force the acceleration."

"Do not touch that command line," I warned, standing up from my chair. "You cannot force-feed an F-12 deletion into a nine-year-old's neural drive. The bandwidth will overload his nervous system."

"Pulse completion at sixty-seven percent," the machine chimed.

A new gray text box popped up on my screen.

Administrator Gideon: Bypassing local terminal. Initiating rapid purge.

The progress bar turned a violent shade of yellow. It surged forward, jumping from sixty-seven to eighty percent in a single second.

"Stop him!" I shouted, rounding the desk.

"It finishes the job," Adrian said, stepping directly into my path. "Let the machine work."

A high-pitched alarm pierced the sterile room.

I shoved Adrian hard in the chest, knocking him off balance. I sprinted toward Noah.

The secondary monitor flashed a blinding red. Noah's telemetry data spiked, then plummeted drastically.

Heart rate: 48 BPM.

"His vitals are crashing!" I reached for the silver wire attached to Noah's neck.

"Leave the connection alone!" Adrian yelled, recovering his footing and grabbing my wrist. "If you sever it during a rapid purge, you'll fracture his memory core!"

"He is a child, Adrian!" I yelled back, twisting my arm to break his grip. "His synaptic pathways aren't fully formed. A rapid purge will cause permanent neurological damage!"

"Gideon ran the simulations," Adrian argued, though his eyes darted toward the flashing red monitor. "The caretaker module stabilizes the heart rate."

"The module is failing!"

Heart rate: 42 BPM.

Noah's lips carried a faint blue tint. His small hands hung limp off the sides of the chair. The tablet slipped from his lap and hit the floor with a loud crack.

I didn't pull the wire. I slammed my palm against the emergency manual override switch bolted to the wall behind his chair.

A heavy, metallic thud echoed through the clinic.

The main power to the terminal died instantly. The screens went pitch black. The low hum of the servers flatlined.

Total silence swallowed the room.

Adrian stood frozen, his hand still outstretched. "What did you do?"

I dropped to my knees in front of my son. I grabbed his small shoulders, my fingers pressing into his skin to find a pulse.

"Noah," I said, my voice shaking. "Noah, look at me."

His chest remained completely still for two agonizing seconds.

Then, he gasped.

Noah's eyes snapped open. The blue tint faded from his lips as oxygen rushed back into his lungs.

"Thank god," I whispered, reaching up to cup his cheek.

He didn't lean into my hand. He didn't cry.

His pupils locked onto my face, entirely devoid of recognition.

"Dr. Ellison?" Noah asked in a polite, hollow tone.
