Chapter 5

"Follow the light, Noah," I instructed, clicking my penlight on.

The boy sat perfectly still in the diagnostic chair. He didn't flinch. He didn't seek my reassurance. His pupils constricted, tracking the sterile white beam as I moved it horizontally across his field of vision.

"Can you tell me your full name?" I asked, keeping my tone strictly professional.

"Noah James Ellison."

"Do you know where we are right now?"

"We are at the memory clinic in downtown Seattle."

His voice carried no tremor. The rapid purge had not damaged his language centers. I clicked the penlight off and slid it into my lab coat pocket.

"What did you eat for breakfast this morning, Noah?"

"Oatmeal with cinnamon."

"Who brought you to the clinic today?"

"My father."

I stepped closer, lowering myself so we were at eye level. "And who am I?"

Noah blinked, his expression strangely blank. He studied my face the way one might look at a receptionist or a stranger on a bus.

"You are the clinic doctor," he answered. "Dr. Ellison."

The cognitive pathways functioned flawlessly. Gideon's forced deletion had surgically severed the maternal node, pushing every memory of me below the retrieval threshold. I wasn't his mother anymore. I was just a woman in a white coat.

A heavy rustling sound broke my focus.

Adrian pushed himself off the edge of the consultation desk. The abrupt power failure had thrown him off balance, but he recovered his footing quickly. He smoothed the lapels of his suit jacket and adjusted his cuffs.

He didn't check on Noah. He didn't ask why the machines had flatlined.

Instead, Adrian's gaze bypassed me entirely, fixing on the frosted glass of the clinic door.

"Is Celeste waiting for us in the lobby?" Adrian asked.

"Your son's heart rate dropped to forty-two beats per minute," I said, rising to block his view of the exit. "He almost went into cardiac arrest."

"He is sitting up and speaking perfectly," Adrian countered.

He raised his left arm, tapping the screen of his smart wristband. The digital interface glowed, casting a faint blue light against his skin.

I stared at the family dashboard widget displayed on his screen. It was a custom interface he built years ago to track our household occupancy. Four digital chairs usually sat in a circle around a glowing hearth icon.

Now, only three chairs remained.

Adrian, Noah, and Celeste.

The slot where my name used to be was entirely empty. The system had already revoked my access to the house.

"You deleted my profile from the residential network," I stated. "You didn't even wait for the procedure to finish."

"The transition requires a clean break," Adrian replied, dropping his arm. "Celeste needs administrative control to manage Noah's schedule. We are leaving."

"You are not walking out of this room," I told him, stepping over to the secondary diagnostic panel mounted on the wall. "The procedure requires a post-op somatic echo verification. Sit down, Adrian."

"I feel fine. The wipe was successful."

"I am the attending physician, and I am not clearing your neurological hold until I verify the structural integrity of your emotional baseline." I slammed my palm against the biometric scanner. The emergency battery hummed to life, booting up the diagnostic screen. "Ninety seconds. That is all it takes."

A gray text box instantly hijacked the monitor, blocking the visual feed.

Administrator Gideon: Verification denied. The primary wipe was successful. Release the patients.

"Your lead developer is practicing medicine without a license," I snapped, typing a manual override command into the console.

"He is protecting company assets from a hostile technician," Adrian said. He checked his watch, entirely unbothered by the ethical violation happening on the screen. "You are stalling."

"I am doing my job."

I bypassed Gideon's security block and pulled a single image from the encrypted partition. I threw it onto the center of the monitor.

The white anemone bookmark.

"Look at the screen, Adrian," I ordered.

He sighed heavily, crossing his arms. He turned his head and glared at the digital flower. "I see it. It means nothing to me. It is just a piece of glass."

"What does it make you feel?"

"Annoyed," he replied, his tone laced with irritation. "Because you refuse to accept that this marriage is over. You keep pushing these useless tests."

I watched his face closely. His jaw muscles tightened. His expression remained entirely hostile, projecting nothing but cold impatience.

Then, a single drop of water spilled over his lower lash line.

The tear tracked slowly down his right cheek, catching the cold fluorescent light of the clinic.

Adrian stopped talking. He reached up, his fingers brushing his own skin in absolute confusion. He stared at the moisture on his fingertips, his brow furrowing.

"Why are my eyes watering?" he demanded.

He wiped his face aggressively, smearing the wetness across his cheekbone.

"Because your body remembers what your brain just deleted," I answered, keeping my voice steady. "The somatic echo proves the association isn't gone. You just buried it. The brain lies, Adrian. The nervous system doesn't."

His conscious mind had erased me. His nervous system still wept for the loss.

"Turn the screen off," Adrian ordered, his voice rising in panic. He backed away from the monitor. "Gideon, shut it down."

The diagnostic monitor flickered violently. Gideon seized control of the local network again, shrinking the image of the white anemone into the far corner of the screen.

A massive digital timer replaced the flower.

90.

Two new blocks of text materialized below the shrinking numbers.

The left box glowed a violent red: REPORT ANOMALY.

The right box shone a bright, clinical green: VERIFICATION PASSED.

Administrator Gideon: You have ninety seconds to release the hold, Dr. Ellison. If the timer expires, the clinic's security doors will unlock automatically.

89.

"Press the green button, Mara," Adrian said. He swallowed hard, forcing his rigid posture back into place. "Let us go home to Celeste."

Noah stood up from his chair. The boy walked across the room and grabbed his father's hand. He didn't look at me. He didn't ask for a hug. He just stood there, waiting for the stranger in the white coat to let them leave.

88.

My right index finger hovered directly between the red and the green.
