Chapter 2

The words landed hard in Elena's chest and just sat there, heavy and immovable.

At least Adrian's baby survived.

Elena didn't speak, she couldn't. Her mouth was open but nothing came out, and the room felt like it was tilting sideways, the floor unsteady beneath her feet. She looked at Vanessa's hand resting over her stomach, and then she looked at Adrian, and he didn't deny it, he didn't look away. He just stood there, watching her with that unreadable expression he'd perfected over the last two years of their marriage, waiting.

Vanessa didn't waste a second, she reached for the folder sitting on the nightstand and pulled out a stack of papers with the kind of practiced calm that made Elena's skin crawl.

"Here," Vanessa said, holding them out like a peace offering. "Since you don't seem to believe me."

Elena didn't want to look. Every part of her wanted to turn around and walk out of this hotel room and never think about any of these people again. But her hands took the papers anyway, because some stubborn, broken part of her still needed proof before she could let herself fully break.

The first page was a pregnancy test. Positive. The second was an ultrasound image, grainy and gray, with a small curved shape circled in pen. The third was a letter from a doctor's office, dated two weeks ago, confirming a three week pregnancy.

Elena's hands started shaking so badly the papers rattled.

"This is real," she said, not really a question, more like she was trying to convince herself it wasn't.

"Did you think I'd lie about something like this?" Vanessa tilted her head, and there was something almost gentle in her voice now, which somehow made it worse. "I know this isn't easy to hear but you need to know."

Her gaze found Adrian, searching his face for something, anything, a flicker of doubt, a moment of hesitation, proof that this was a mistake he regretted. Instead she found him standing there with his arms crossed, watching her reaction like he was waiting for a verdict.

"Say something," Elena whispered.

"What do you want me to say?" Adrian's voice was quiet, but there was an edge underneath it, the same edge that used to show up right before he criticized something she'd worn or said or done. "You wanted honesty, I'm giving you honesty."

"You're going to have a baby with her." Elena's voice cracked on the word baby, and she hated herself for it, hated that even now, even after everything, some small part of her still felt the loss of it like a fresh wound. "While we're still married."

"The baby changes nothing," Adrian said.

Marcus, still standing near the door with the other man, cleared his throat and mumbled something about needing to step out. Nobody stopped him, Elena almost envied him for being able to leave.

"I want you to meet someone," Adrian said suddenly, and his tone shifted into something formal, something rehearsed, and Elena realized with a sick twist in her stomach that he was about to say it out loud, in front of her, like she wasn't even standing there bleeding from the inside out.

"Vanessa," he continued, reaching for her hand, "is going to be the future Mrs. Blake."

The words landed like a second blow. Elena actually stepped back, her shoulder bumping into the wall behind her, and for a moment the room tilted, the edges of her vision blurring with tears she refused to let fall in front of these people.

For just a moment, something shifted in Vanessa's expression. Not much, just a quick tightening around her eyes, the smile pulling slightly too tight, like the word “future” had landed differently than she expected. Then it was gone, smoothed over so fast Elena almost thought she'd imagined it.

Her eyes dropped to the papers still in her hands. The ultrasound, the doctor's letter, the circled shape that was going to grow into a child, Adrian's child, with another woman, in the life Elena had spent six years trying to hold together.

Her fingers loosened.

The papers slipped from her hand one by one, drifting to the floor at her feet, and she didn't bend to pick them up.

She turned to the bed instead, picked up the envelope Adrian had handed her earlier, and pulled out the divorce papers. Her hand was trembling so badly she could barely hold the pen she found on the nightstand. She didn't read a single line, she didn't trust herself to, she just pressed the pen to the signature line and signed her name, quick and final, like ripping off a bandage before she could change her mind.

She set the papers on the edge of the bed, smoothed them once, and stepped back.

Adrian stared at her signature longer than necessary.

"There," she said, and her voice was quieter than she expected, almost steady. "You have what you wanted."

Silence settled over the room even Vanessa had nothing left to say.

Elena picked up her bag from the floor, looped it over her shoulder, and walked toward the door without looking at either of them again. She kept her back straight and her chin level, because she was not going to fall apart in front of Vanessa Reed, she was not going to give her that.

She pulled the door open and walked out.

─── ⋅ ∙ ∘ ☽ ༓ ☾ ∘ ⋅ ⋅ ───

Home no longer felt like home.

Elena stood in the doorway for a long moment, staring at the photographs still hanging on the walls, photographs of a wedding day she used to think was the happiest day of her life.

She walked through the apartment as if it belonged to strangers now. The couch they'd picked out together during their first apartment, the unfinished bookshelf he'd promised to build, the yellow nursery down the hall that had never welcomed a baby.

For the first time in six years, Elena didn't make an excuse for him.

She didn't tell herself he was just stressed from work, she didn't tell herself things would get better once the company settled down, she didn't tell herself she just needed to be more patient, more understanding, more willing to give him space.

She let herself feel exactly how angry she was, and it scared her how good it felt.

Her phone buzzed on the counter, and she almost ignored it, but something made her glance at the screen. A text from Adrian.

You need to be out of the apartment by tomorrow night. I already had your things packed in boxes, don't make this harder than it has to be.

Elena stared at the message until the words blurred together. “Tomorrow night”, Like she was a tenant who'd overstayed her lease, not a wife who'd given six years of her life to a man who couldn't even wait until the ink dried on divorce papers before moving someone else into the life they'd built.

She walked down the hall and found the boxes exactly where he said they'd be, stacked neatly against the wall in their bedroom, her clothes already folded inside, her books, her shoes, pieces of her existence reduced to cardboard and tape.

Her hands trembled as she opened the closet to check if he'd missed anything, and that's when she saw it, tucked behind a stack of old sweaters she hadn't worn in years, a small external drive, the kind Adrian used for backing up sensitive company files, the kind he never let anyone touch, not even her.

She almost left it there. It wasn't hers to look at, and honestly, she didn't care anymore what Adrian did with his company or his secrets or his life.

But something made her plug it into her laptop sitting open on the bed.

Files loaded slowly across the screen, spreadsheets and folders labeled with dates going back months. Elena scrolled without really thinking, her mind still half lost in the apartment, in the boxes, in the life she was about to leave behind.

Then one folder caught her eye.

V. Reed - Account Access Logs.

Her fingers hesitated over the trackpad before she clicked it open, and the moment the file loaded, her breath caught in her throat.

Vanessa's login credentials. Dozens of entries. Dates stretching back nearly eight months, long before the affair ever started, long before Elena had any idea her husband's secretary even existed in his personal life. Each entry showed access to internal financial accounts, accounts Elena recognized from old conversations with Adrian about company security, accounts that were supposed to be restricted to only a handful of senior executives.

Elena's heart pounded as she scrolled further, her eyes catching transfer amounts that made absolutely no sense for a secretary's role, numbers far too large, dates far too frequent, patterns that even someone with no business background could recognize as deeply, dangerously wrong.
