Chapter 2

I didn't confront him. Not that night, and not the next.

Instead, I started remembering.

Four years ago in New York, at a cramped alumni party in somebody's Chelsea loft, a guy in a thrift-store blazer spilled beer on my shoes.

"I'd buy you new ones," Adrian had said, "but I'm three weeks behind on rent."

"Then what *can* you afford?"

"A really good apology. And maybe a slice of pizza."

He was a young architect with big sketches and an empty wallet. I loved his hunger. I loved the way his eyes lit up at two in the morning when he spread his drawings across my floor and asked, "Okay, be honest. Is this genius or garbage?"

Two years later, he stood at the altar and held my hands. "Rich or poor, Evie, I'll honor you. I'll cherish you. You'll never carry the weight alone."

Our first year, we lived in a Brooklyn shoebox. Dollar pizza. The last train home. One night we fought until 1 a.m. over baby names.

"Theodore," he'd insisted.

"Our son is not going to be a Theodore."

"Our son will be a *distinguished* Theodore."

Then the first big contract came. After that, the move to Boston. Then the late nights. Then the new passcode on his phone.

"He's building something," I used to tell our friends. "Successful men pay for it with their time."

I'd defended him to everyone. Even to myself.

---

I spread the joint statements across the kitchen table. Credit cards. Company reimbursements. Every document I had a legal right to see. Nothing more.

March 9th: Hotel, Providence. Reimbursed as business travel.

I flipped to my calendar. On March 9th, Adrian had texted me: *Sleeping at the office, babe. Deadline hell.*

June 22nd. Same story. September 4th. Same again.

Seven times in two years.

My hand found my phone and booked a consultation with a family law attorney for Thursday. Then I called his office.

"Cole Design, this is Tasha."

"Hi, Tasha. It's Evelyn. Quick question. Was Adrian in Providence last September?"

A pause. Too long.

"Um. We've had some project restructuring lately, Mrs. Cole. He's out a lot. I honestly don't manage his personal schedule."

"His *personal* schedule?"

"I mean, his travel. Sorry. I just don't know."

"That's okay, Tasha. Thank you."

I hung up. Her voice had been shaking, and I hadn't even raised mine.

---

Saturday night, I threw a dinner party to celebrate the Harborview contract.

Adrian was perfect. He pulled out my chair. He cut my steak into neat little squares, like I was something precious.

"You know what nobody tells you about startups?" He raised his glass to the table. "You eat a lot of ramen. And when your server crashes at three a.m., there's only one person who answers the phone." He turned to me and smiled. "Her."

"To Evelyn!" Greg Talbot, his business partner, lifted his wine. "The woman behind the man."

"Adrian, you're so lucky," his friend Jenna said, pressing a hand to her chest. "Most guys forget."

"I'll never forget." Adrian laced his fingers through mine and squeezed. "Not one day of what she gave me."

For a second, I almost fell for it. The candlelight. His thumb tracing my knuckles. The way he looked at me like I was still the girl on that loft floor.

Then the guests left, and I bent to straighten the shoe rack in the foyer.

Something glittered near the baseboard. A diamond stud with a teardrop setting.

I don't own diamond studs.

"Adrian?" I held it up between two fingers. "Whose is this?"

He came around the corner, drying a wineglass. The towel stopped moving.

"Oh. That's—" He set the glass down too hard. It rang against the marble. "A client must've dropped it. When I had those people over for drinks last month."

"You had clients here last month?"

"I told you. Didn't I tell you?" He reached for it, quick. "Here, I'll get it back to her."

"To who?"

"To the *client*, Evie." He laughed, but his ears had gone red. "Jesus, what's with the interrogation?"

I dropped it into his palm.

"No interrogation," I said. "Just cleaning up."

---

At 1:14 a.m., my phone lit up on the nightstand. Adrian didn't stir.

*Madison: I'm sorry. I almost didn't send this.*

The photo showed a restaurant in the Back Bay. A birthday cake with sparklers. Adrian leaned across the table, grinning, toward the same young woman from the Larchmont.

Between them sat a small velvet ring box.

*Madison: Her name is Brielle Lawson. PR director at Calloway Properties.*

My chest went cold. Calloway was Adrian's biggest partner on Harborview, the contract we had just toasted.

He hadn't just cheated on me. He'd brought her into the business I helped build.

---

The next afternoon, I sat across from Brielle at a sleek café on Newbury Street. Getting her to come had taken one email.

*Hi! I'm planning a surprise for Adrian Cole and hear you work with him closely. Coffee?*

I'd signed it *Eve*. No last name.

She was beautiful in a polished, glossy way. Camel coat. Perfect manicure. No earring in her left ear.

"I love surprises," she said, stirring her oat latte. "So what's the plan? Birthday? Work thing?"

"Something like that. I just need to know his schedule. When he's free."

"Oh, not next week." She smiled, soft and private. "We're going to Miami."

My fingers locked around my cup. "We?"

"Me and Adrian." She tucked her hair behind her ear. "Five days. He's been so stressed, poor thing. He needs it."

"Sounds romantic."

"It is." She leaned in, almost giddy, like we were girlfriends now. "Honestly? He promised he'd give me an answer while we're there. A real one."

The coffee trembled in my cup. I set it down before it spilled.

"What answer?"

Brielle glanced at her phone, thumbing through a message. She didn't even look up.

"He said once he takes care of some things, he'll give me a real future." She laughed lightly. "Men, right? Always 'some things.'"

"Always," I said.

And I smiled at her. I actually smiled.

---

Outside, the wind off the Charles cut straight through my coat. My eyes stung. I told myself it was the cold.

The photos were real. The hotel was real. The woman was real.

And "some things" meant me.

I pulled out my phone and typed with numb fingers.

*Me: Come home early tonight. I made your favorite. We need to talk.*

The reply came in under a minute.

*Adrian: Anything for you, babe. ❤️*

I stared at the heart.

One last chance. I'd give him one last chance to look me in the eye and tell me how much of these four years had ever been true.

But somewhere under the hurt, a colder thought was taking shape.

Brielle's earring was in my husband's pocket.

And the woman on the valet ticket had signed her name with a *K*.
