Chapter 3

I booked a table at Lucca on Friday night.

It was the little Italian place in the North End where we'd spent every anniversary since moving to Boston. Same corner booth. Same candle stuck in an old Chianti bottle.

I wore the black velvet dress. The one Adrian once said made him forget his own name.

Before I left, I polished my wedding ring with a soft cloth until it shone under the bathroom light.

I didn't want a scene. I wanted the truth, said across a table, by two adults who had once loved each other.

Adrian walked in at seven sharp. He stopped dead when he saw me.

"Evie." Then the grin broke wide. "Look at you."

He pulled me up into a hug and held on longer than usual.

"I've been a ghost lately, haven't I?" he murmured into my hair. "I know. I'm sorry. Once Harborview wraps, I'm all yours. I'll make it up to you."

"You don't have to make anything up."

"I want to." He slid into the booth and reached for the wine list. "The usual?"

"The usual."

The steaks arrived. He talked like a man with nothing to hide.

"So I've been thinking. Christmas in Switzerland. Zermatt. You've always wanted to ski."

"I've never skied in my life."

"Exactly. I'll teach you." He pointed his fork at me. "And next spring? A new house. Something with a garden. You keep killing basil on the windowsill. You need real dirt."

I smiled because he expected me to.

"And maybe..." His voice softened. He set his knife down. "Maybe it's time we finally had a kid. I keep picturing it. A little Theodore running around the yard."

The word hit me like a slap.

Three days ago, I'd stood across the street from Calloway Properties and watched him kiss Brielle Lawson against the side of his car. Her hands were inside his coat. His hand was in her hair.

And now he was naming our son.

"Adrian." I folded my napkin in my lap. "Is there anything you haven't told me lately?"

He paused mid-cut. The knife hovered over the steak.

One second. Two.

Then he reached across the table and wrapped my hand in both of his.

"Evelyn." His eyes held mine, warm and steady. "You're the only real family I have in this world. I would never do anything to hurt you."

Something inside me went very quiet.

That was it. That was the last door, and he'd just closed it himself.

I eased my hand out of his. I took out my phone.

"Then explain this."

I set it on the white tablecloth. The Larchmont awning. Snow in his hair. My scarf around her throat.

I swiped. The valet ticket. *8:31 p.m.* Purple ink. *Call me — K.*

I swiped again. A screenshot of my notes from coffee on Newbury Street.

"Miami," I said. "Five days. Next week."

His smile didn't vanish all at once. It drained slowly, like water through a cracked glass.

"Okay. Okay, this looks bad. I get it." He held up both hands. "But that photo's missing context. That was the night I walked Morrison's assistant up—"

"In my scarf?"

"She was cold, Evie!"

"And the ticket?"

"People shove numbers at me all the time." His jaw tightened. "You know what this is? Someone's trying to wreck us. Madison has hated me since day one. She's been dying for this."

"Brielle Lawson."

He stopped.

The candle flickered between us. A waiter laughed somewhere near the kitchen. Adrian just sat there, mouth half-open, like his battery had died.

"Do you love her?" I asked.

He didn't answer.

He leaned back instead, and when he spoke again, his voice had gone flat and cool.

"Why were you investigating me?"

I actually laughed. One short, ugly sound.

"That's your question?"

"You went through my things. You met my business contact behind my back. Yeah, Evelyn, that's my question."

He really believed it. He really thought I owed *him* an explanation.

I pressed my palms flat against the table to keep them still.

"I gave you everything," I said. "My parents' money. My career. My weekends. My nights. I answered your phones above a laundromat for a year and a half because I believed we were in this together. That whatever came, we'd face it side by side."

"Evie—"

"I'm not finished." My voice cracked. I pushed through it. "What I won't accept is a husband who lives off everything I gave him and then hands his *real* future to someone else."

He dragged a hand down his face. For a long moment, he stared at his plate.

"Almost a year," he said finally.

The room tilted.

"It was the pressure. The company, the investors, all of it. And we..." He gestured vaguely between us. "We stopped being *us*. There was no spark. I needed something that wasn't stress. But I never planned to leave you. Never."

"That's supposed to make it better?"

"It's supposed to be the truth. You wanted the truth." He leaned in, suddenly urgent. "Look. We don't have to blow this up. I'll end it with her. Clean. Just give me a little time to handle it properly."

"Time."

"A few weeks. That's all."

I stared at him. The cold started in my fingers and climbed all the way up my arms.

"If I'd never found out," I said slowly, "would you have kept lying to me?"

He lowered his voice. "It already happened. What matters now is how we fix it. Not digging through the past over and over."

I looked at him. The dark hair. The brown eyes. The mouth I'd kissed ten thousand times.

I didn't know this man at all.

I slid the ring off my finger. It came free easily, as if it had been waiting. I laid it beside his wine glass.

"I'm done keeping your secrets," I said. "And I'm done being the perfect wife who sacrifices everything for her husband."

His face went white.

He lunged across the table and seized my wrist. Hard.

"Evie, no. Wait. You don't get it. I need you. You're not just my wife, you're my partner. You're the one person I trust."

I twisted free.

"You trust that I'll never leave you," I said calmly. "That's not the same as trusting me."

I picked up my coat and walked out.

The cold slammed into me on Hanover Street. I made it as far as the corner before the streetlight blurred and the tears finally came.

---

I didn't go home.

Madison opened her door in pajama pants, took one look at my face, and pulled me straight into her arms.

"What did he do?"

"He asked for time." I laughed and sobbed at the same time. "Mads, he asked me for *time*."

"Oh, honey. Come here."

I cried on her couch until almost four in the morning. She never once said *I told you so.*

---

My phone started at 6:52 a.m.

Thirteen missed calls. Then the texts.

*Adrian: I'm so sorry. Please come home.*

*Adrian: Where are you? This isn't fair.*

*Adrian: You're seriously going to throw away four years over one mistake??*

*Adrian: Evie please. I'm begging you. Just talk to me.*

I didn't reply to a single one.

I opened a new message, typed in the name and number of the attorney I'd met on Thursday, and hit send.

*Me: From now on, everything about our marriage and our shared assets goes through my lawyer.*

Then I turned the phone face down on Madison's coffee table.

I thought the hardest part was over. I thought all I had left to do was end a marriage that had failed.

I had no idea that what Adrian was truly terrified of losing had never been my love at all.
