Chapter 2

The west wing bedroom of the Vitale fortress was less of a prison cell and more of a gilded cage. It was massive, featuring a king-sized bed wrapped in dark silk, polished marble floors, and a sweeping private balcony overlooking the roaring waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

But the luxury was a flat-out lie. The locks on the heavy oak doors were entirely electronic, and the towering floor-to-ceiling windows were made of reinforced, multi-layered bulletproof glass. Elena Rossi didn't waste a single second crying over her forced marriage or her family's spineless betrayal.

Tears didn't rewrite code, and they certainly didn't stop a bullet. She kicked off her high heels, letting them clatter against the marble, and grabbed the hem of her restrictive emerald silk dress. With a sharp, practiced tug, she ripped the fabric clean down the seam, freeing her legs.

She quickly threw the ruined gown aside and changed into a pair of black cargo pants, combat boots, and a tight black tank top she had hidden in her emergency bag. By 2:00 AM, the mansion was dead silent. Elena sat cross-legged on the floor in the corner of the room, her back against the solid wall to avoid any blind spots.

Her modified, military-grade tablet glowed against her sharp features, casting a pale blue light over her determined eyes. "Let's see what the big, bad villain is hiding in his sandbox," she muttered to herself, her fingers flying across the digital keyboard with blinding speed.

Elena wasn't a standard hacker; she was a ghost in the digital machine. Within forty minutes of probing the Vitale syndicate's main server, she successfully bypassed the first layer of their firewalls. She purposefully didn't touch their financial records or weapon manifests-doing so would trigger an immediate alarm.

Instead, she targeted the estate's automated climate control, security cameras, and main lighting servers. With a definitive tap on the screen, she executed her custom script.Click.Throughout the sprawling estate, the lights flickered, hummed, and died. Instantly, the loud backup generators kicked in, but Elena's script was already waiting for them.

She overrode the backup relays too, plunging the entire multi-million-dollar compound into pitch-black darkness. Seconds later, she reversed the heavy industrial air conditioning units, forcing them to blast hot, humid summer air directly into the VIP corridors.

Elena smirked, leaning her head back against the bedpost. Welcome to hell, Dante. Let's see how cool you look when you're sweating.Ten minutes later, the electronic lock on her bedroom door hissed as the backup battery safety mechanism engaged. The heavy oak door swung open with a slow, ominous creak.

The sharp, blinding beam of a tactical flashlight cut through the darkness, slicing across the room before illuminating her face. Dante Vitale walked in. The supreme Capo had stripped out of his formal suit jacket and silk tie.

His white dress shirt was unbuttoned halfway down his chest, the fabric clinging tightly to his broad chest because of the sudden, suffocating heat in the mansion. His sleeves were rolled up tightly to reveal thick, muscular forearms completely covered in dark, intricate tattoos of wolves and thorns.

A heavy, matte-black Glock 19 was gripped firmly in his right hand. He didn't look angry or panicked; he looked completely, dangerously focused.

"Turn the power back on, Elena," Dante commanded. His deep baritone voice dropped to a gravelly, midnight whisper that seemed to vibrate through the floorboards.Elena didn't look up from her screen, her fingers continuing to scroll through lines of data.

"I don't know what you're talking about, Capo. Maybe your expensive mansion just has terrible wiring. You should hire a better electrician." Dante closed the distance between them in two long, predatory strides. He reached down to grab the edge of her tablet, but Elena anticipated the move. She twisted her body with fluid grace, using a low self-defense sweep she had practiced for years.

She aimed her boot directly at the back of his knee, intending to bring his massive frame crashing down. Dante reacted with terrifying, military-grade speed. He didn't fall. Instead, he caught her ankle mid-air with his left hand, his grip like a steel handcuff. He twisted his weight, using her momentum to pull her straight up off the floor and pin her flat onto the mattress.Elena didn't panic or scream.

The moment her back hit the bed, she utilized his own leverage against him. She brought her free leg up, driving her knee squarely into his chest. The force of the blow actually made the six-foot-three Capo stumble backward a step, breaking his grip.

She immediately scrambled backward onto the headboard, grabbing a heavy, solid silver candlestick from the nightstand, holding it like a club.Dante stood under the moonlight filtering through the window, rubbing his chest where her boot had landed. A low, dark, and genuinely amused chuckle vibrated deep in his chest.

"A hacker who actually knows how to throw a strike," Dante murmured, his stormy grey eyes sweeping over her athletic stance, openly admiring the raw fire in her eyes.

"Your pathetic stepbrother kept you well hidden. He told me you were just a quiet, useless girl."

"Marco is an idiot who thinks women are currency," Elena spat, her knuckles turning white around the silver candlestick.

"I taught myself how to survive monsters like him. And I sure as hell know how to handle monsters like you. Step back, Dante." Dante took a step forward anyway, completely unfazed by the heavy silver weapon in her hand. He stopped just inches from the sharp tip. He reached out, his bare, scarred hand wrapping directly around the silver metal, pushing it down effortlessly until there was nothing separating them.

The heat radiating off his body in the uncooled, humid room was suffocating. Elena's heart hammered against her ribs, from the sheer, electric adrenaline of facing him down. Dante didn't pull away. Instead, he leaned closer, his chest almost brushing against hers.

Because of the heat she had caused, a light sheen of sweat coated his collarbones, highlighting the hard lines of his muscles under the unbuttoned shirt."You're very brave when you're holding a weapon, little mouse," Dante whispered, his face so close she could feel the warmth of his breath against her lips.

"But we are in a very hot room, and you are wearing very tight clothes." Elena's eyes narrowed, her sharp tongue refusing to back down. She looked down at his unbuttoned shirt, then locked eyes with him, a mocking smirk playing on her lips.

"Are you complaining about the heat, capo? Because from where I'm standing, it looks like you're the one who can't handle the temperature. If you wanted me to strip, you could have just asked. You didn't need to break into my room just to show off your chest tattoos."

Dante paused, his grey eyes darkening instantly. The playful, razor-sharp defiance coming from this twenty-year-old girl hit him like a physical jolt. No one spoke to him like this. No one dared to tease the King. He leaned in even further, his lips brushing the shell of her ear, his deep voice sending a shiver straight down her spine.

"If I wanted you to strip, Elena, you wouldn't be wearing those cargo pants right now. I don't ask for things. I take them." He slowly let go of the candlestick, his gloved hand moving up to trail a single finger down the side of her neck, lingering right over her racing pulse.

He could feel how fast her heart was beating, but her eyes never wavered. She was terrified, yet she was entirely thrilled by the danger.

"The power stays off," Dante murmured, his voice dropping to a smoldering whisper.

"You will sleep in the dark heat tonight. Let's see how long your little attitude lasts when you're sweating through these silk sheets. Goodnight, wife." He turned on his heel, his heavy leather boots clicking sharply against the marble as he walked out, the electronic door locking automatically behind him with a heavy thud.

Elena dropped the candlestick onto the bed, a fierce, victorious grin spreading across her face as she exhaled a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. He thought he was punishing her by leaving her in the dark. But she had spent her entire life surviving in the shadows.

She picked her tablet back up from the floor. She hadn't just messed with the lights and the air conditioning. While Dante was busy trying to intimidate her and playing his little teasing games, her background script had successfully finished its real task.

On her screen, a green progress bar reached 100%. She had just downloaded the completely encrypted layout of his entire private security grid and guard rotation schedules.

He thought he married a girl who just got sharp tongue but, he didn't realize he had just brought a live grenade into his bedroom-and she was already ticking.
