Chapter 3

The heavy morning sun pierced through the bulletproof glass, turning the humid bedroom into a literal greenhouse. Elena woke up with a thin sheen of sweat on her collarbone, her back stiff from sleeping on the floor. She didn't care.

A manic, brilliant smile stretched across her face as her eyes flew open. She grabbed her tablet from the floor. The green progress bar was gone, replaced by a flashing, pulsing node map of the Vitale fortress. Every security camera, every laser tripwire, and every single guard rotation schedule was mapped out down to the exact second.

"You thought the dark would break me, Dante," she whispered, her voice husky from sleep. "But you just gave me the perfect cover." She stood up, ignoring her aching muscles, and walked into the attached luxury bathroom. After a freezing cold shower to wash away the sticky heat of the night, she dressed back into her cargo pants and a clean, sleeveless black top.

She tied her dark hair into a high, fierce ponytail. If she was going to war, she was going to look the part. When she stepped out of the bathroom, the heavy oak door to her bedroom was wide open. The power had been restored.

The industrial air conditioning was humming back to life, sending a blessed wave of icy air into the room. Standing in the doorway was an older woman wearing a crisp, ironed housekeeper's uniform. She held a silver tray loaded with black coffee, fresh fruit, and a sleek, expensive-looking smartphone.

"Good morning, Mrs. Vitale," the older woman said, her voice shaking slightly. She wouldn't look Elena in the eye.

"Mr. Vitale ordered me to bring you breakfast. He also requested your presence in the dining hall in exactly ten minutes.

"Elena took the silver tray, setting it on the unmade bed. Her eyes locked onto the smartphone.

"What's this?"

"Sir said you needed a phone that works on our network. He said... he said your old devices are garbage compared to his infrastructure." Elena choked out a dry, sarcastic laugh.

"Garbage? Tell your 'Sir' that my 'garbage' device completely blindfolded his multi-million-dollar empire last night."

The maid turned pale as a sheet, bowed quickly, and practically ran out of the room. Elena didn't touch the food. She picked up the new smartphone. It was heavily encrypted, running on a proprietary Vitale network.

She plugged her modified tablet into the phone's data port. Within three minutes, she had cloned the phone's MAC address, rooted its kernel, and installed a hidden backdoor script that would feed her every text message and call routed through the entire estate.

"Thanks for the hardware, husband," she smirked. The dining hall of the Vitale estate looked like a cathedral dedicated to dark wealth. A mahogany table that could seat thirty people stretched across the room. At the very head of the table sat Dante. He was reading a printed financial report, a crystal glass of blood-red orange juice sitting beside him.

He had changed into a dark gray tailored vest over a crisp white shirt, the top buttons open just enough to hint at the heavy tattoos beneath. He looked rested, powerful, and entirely untouchable.

"You're late by two minutes," Dante said without looking up from his papers. His deep baritone rolled across the empty room.

"I had to configure the tracking device you so graciously gifted me," Elena replied smoothly, pulling out the heavy chair directly to his right and dropping into it.

She crossed her legs, leaning back with total confidence. "Next time, buy the upgraded model. The firewall on that phone took me a whole ninety seconds to shatter."

Dante slowly lowered his papers. His stormy grey eyes locked onto her face, scanning her fresh appearance, her tight ponytail, and the absolute lack of fear in her posture. A dangerous flicker of amusement danced in his eyes.

"You look remarkably well for someone who spent the night in a hundred-degree room," Dante murmured, leaning forward, resting his powerful forearms on the table. The scent of cedarwood and expensive espresso drifted toward her.

"I told you, Capo. I thrive in the dark," Elena shot back, tilting her chin up.

"But I notice you look a bit tired. Did the heat get to you? Or were you just worried I'd lock you out of your own master bedroom next?" The two enforcers standing guard by the door audibly swallowed their spit. No one taunted Dante Vitale. No one lived to tell the tale.

Dante didn't snap. Instead, he reached out, his long, scarred fingers wrapping around his glass of juice. He took a slow sip, his eyes never leaving her lips. "Last night was a free pass, Elena. A wedding gift," Dante whispered, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly vibration that made her skin tingle.

"You proved you have teeth. But if you play with my grid again, I won't just pin you to a mattress. I will make sure you don't have the strength to use those fingers to type for a month." Elena felt a sudden rush of heat hit her cheeks, but she refused to back down.

"Is that a threat, husband?"

"It's a promise, wife." Before Elena could deliver another razor-sharp retort, the heavy double doors of the dining hall burst open. A tall, heavily built enforcer with a fresh scar across his cheek rushed in, his face completely pale. He didn't even apologize for interrupting. He ran straight to Dante's side, bending down to whisper urgently into his ear.

"Boss, we have a problem. The northern port. Someone didn't just hijack the shipment last night-they wiped our tracking servers clean from the inside. We don't know where the ghost fleet is. And the buyers are demanding the product in two hours or they declare war."

Elena didn't miss a beat. She didn't look at the guard. She reached into her pocket, pulled out her tablet, and tapped a single key. A loud, electronic beep echoed from the center of the table. Dante's eyes snapped down to her screen. On it, a pulsing red radar dot was tracking three large cargo vessels moving rapidly along the coast, completely hidden from the standard Vitale radar.

Elena leaned back, a cold, predatory smirk mirroring Dante's own from the night before.

"It looks like your multi-million-dollar security team is blind again, Capo," Elena whispered, her voice dripping with effortless triumph.

"Lucky for you, the girl you bought for fifty million dollars happens to know exactly where your missing empire is hiding."

Dante stared at the screen, then looked up at her, his grey eyes darkening with a terrifying, lethal mixture of shock and intense desire.

"What do you want, Elena?" Dante growled, his hand tightening around his glass until the crystal creaked. Elena leaned in until her lips were just inches from his ear, her breath hot against his skin.

"Rewrite the contract. I want full access to your main server room, unmonitored. Or you can watch your fifty-million-dollar empire sink to the bottom of the ocean."
