Chapter 5

"Five Years Later"

POV: Ava

My alarm rang at 6:00 a.m., but I was already awake. I silenced it quickly and slipped out of bed, moving through the quiet morning routine I had perfected over the years. The apartment was modest—a two-bedroom in a safe but unremarkable part of the city—but it was warm. Sunlight filtered through simple curtains I had sewn myself. Photos of Emma and me covered the fridge and shelves. No trace of the old life. No trace of him.

Not physically, anyway.

Some memories refused to leave no matter how hard I tried.

Every now and then, I would catch the scent of a familiar cologne on a stranger walking past or hear someone laugh in a way that sounded painfully like Adrian. Those moments always stopped me for a second before I reminded myself that ghosts only had power if I kept feeding them.

I had stopped looking over my shoulder years ago.

Stopped wondering whether he was searching for me.

Stopped hoping for answers that would never change what happened.

The past belonged exactly where it was.

Behind me.

I dressed for work in a tailored blouse and pencil skirt, then moved to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. Five years had changed me.

The first year had been the hardest.

I worked during the day, studied online at night to improve my qualifications, and spent every spare moment raising Emma. There were nights when I cried quietly after putting her to bed because I wasn't sure how I would pay the next month's rent.

But somehow...We always made it through.

Every promotion at work felt like proof that I wasn't the frightened woman who had run away carrying nothing but a suitcase and two positive pregnancy tests.

I had built this life with my own hands.

No one could take it away from us.

The woman who once lived in a penthouse, who believed love could survive anything, was gone. I had rebuilt myself piece by piece—new job at a marketing firm, new routines, new strength. The engagement ring had been sold long ago to help pay for Emma’s first year of daycare. I no longer reached for it in moments of weakness.

“Mommy?”

A small voice, still sleepy and sweet, called from the bedroom. Before I could answer, tiny footsteps pattered across the floor and a warm little body crashed into my legs.

Emma.

My heart filled instantly. She was five now—bright, talkative, and full of endless energy. Her dark hair fell in soft curls around her face, and her hazel eyes—eyes that looked so much like her father’s—sparkled with morning excitement.

“Good morning, my love,” I said, lifting her into my arms and pressing a kiss to her forehead. She smelled like baby shampoo and warmth.

We moved through our routine together. I made oatmeal while she chattered about her dreams. She helped set the table, carefully placing spoons beside bowls. These simple moments were everything to me. They made every sacrifice worth it.

Sometimes Emma would wrap her tiny arms around me for no reason at all and whisper, "You're the best mommy."

She never realized those simple words healed parts of me that life had once shattered.

She had become my reason to wake up on difficult mornings. My reason to keep fighting when exhaustion threatened to consume me. My greatest blessing had been born from my greatest heartbreak.

As we ate, Emma looked up at me with that innocent, curious expression I both loved and feared.

“Mommy… do I have a daddy?”

The spoon paused halfway to my mouth. Just for a second. I had answered this question before, but it never got easier.

“You do,” I said gently, brushing a curl from her face.

She smiled, hopeful. “Will I meet him one day?”

I forced a smile of my own, the same one I had practiced in the mirror many times. “Maybe, sweetheart. Eat your breakfast now.”

She accepted the answer happily and launched into a story about her favorite cartoon. I watched her, heart aching with a familiar mix of love and quiet grief.

---

Later that morning, Emma reminded me about the special event at her kindergarten. A charity foundation had donated new books and playground equipment, and parents were invited to the ceremony. I promised I would leave work early to attend. She hugged me tightly before I dropped her off, her excitement contagious.

I had no idea who the guest sponsor was.

---

By the time I arrived at the kindergarten that afternoon, the small schoolyard was already crowded. Luxury cars lined the street—far more than usual for a simple donation event. Reporters hovered near the entrance, and parents whispered excitedly among themselves.

I adjusted the strap of my bag and scanned the crowd for Emma. A woman near me leaned toward her friend.

“Did you hear? Mr. Hayes is here. Adrian Hayes. He’s the one who funded everything.”

My entire body went cold. My heartbeat stuttered violently. I slowly turned, dread pooling in my stomach.

There he was.

Adrian stood near the temporary stage, shaking hands with the school principal. Five years had left their mark. He looked older, sharper around the edges. The easy smile I once knew was gone, replaced by something more guarded, more tired. His suit was impeccable as always, but he carried a quiet heaviness I hadn’t seen before.

He hadn’t noticed me yet.

I turned immediately, heart hammering. I need to leave. Grab Emma and go. Before he…

“Mommy!”

Emma broke free from her teacher’s hand and ran toward the new playground equipment, laughing with pure joy. I rushed after her, trying to stay calm.

At the same moment, a brightly colored football rolled across the grass and stopped at Adrian’s feet. He bent down to pick it up, a rare, faint smile touching his lips as he straightened.

Emma ran straight to him without hesitation.

“Mister, that’s my ball!” she said brightly, holding out her small hands.

Adrian knelt to her level, handing the ball back with surprising gentleness. “Here you go, princess.”

Emma took it with a big grin. “Thank you!”

As he looked at her, his expression changed. The smile froze. His eyes traced her face: the familiar curve of her smile, the shape of her eyes, the dark hair that mirrored his own childhood photos.

Something inside him shifted. Recognition. Confusion. A crack in the armor he had worn for five long years.

Emma turned, still beaming, and pointed toward me.

“Mommy!”

Adrian slowly rose to his full height. His gaze lifted.

Our eyes met across the playground.

Neither of us spoke.

Five years vanished in a single heartbeat. The noise of the event faded. The world narrowed to just the three of us—me, him, and the little girl standing innocently between us.

Adrian’s eyes moved from my face… to Emma… and back again. I watched the exact moment realization began to unravel him.
