Chapter 6

POV: Ava

Time stopped the moment our eyes met across the playground.

For one impossible second, the sounds around me disappeared. The laughter of children, the applause from parents, the principal's speech over the microphone—it all faded into the background. There was only him.

Five years had changed Adrian. His shoulders seemed broader, his features sharper. The easy confidence he once carried had been replaced by something quieter, heavier. There were faint lines around his eyes that hadn't existed before, and a tiredness settled deep within them.

He looked like a man who had spent years carrying something he could never put down.

I hated that a part of me noticed.

I hated even more that a part of me still cared.

Adrian stood frozen, his gaze locked on mine. Emma stood innocently between us, holding her ball and looking up at the tall stranger with open curiosity.

“Ava…” he said quietly.

It was the first time I had heard him speak my name in five years. The sound sent an unwelcome shiver through me—familiar, painful, dangerous.

I immediately took Emma’s hand, forcing a polite, distant smile. “Excuse us.”

I tightened my grip on Emma's small hand.Every instinct screamed at me to run.

Not because I was afraid of Adrian. But because I was afraid of myself.

I had spent five years learning how to breathe without him.Five years convincing myself that the woman he broke no longer existed.

One look into his eyes had threatened to undo all of it.I couldn't allow that.

Not now.Not when my daughter was standing beside me.

I turned to leave, pulling Emma gently with me. My heart was racing so hard I could barely breathe.

---

Adrian walked after us. Not aggressively, but with enough purpose to make me stop. He kept a respectful distance.

“How have you been?” he asked.

I answered without looking at him. “I’m fine.”

“That’s all?”

He searched my face as though hoping to find the woman he remembered. But that woman had disappeared long ago.She had been replaced by someone who knew how to survive.

Someone who understood that love wasn't enough to protect a heart from betrayal.

I refused to let him see the storm raging beneath my calm expression.

“What else is there to say?” My voice was cold, clipped. Every word hurt, but I refused to let him see it.

Emma watched the exchange with wide, innocent eyes. “Mommy… who’s he?”

I answered immediately, keeping my tone light. “Someone I used to know.”

The words landed like a blow.

Once, It would have been the man who'll be your father one day.

Life had rewritten that future.

Now...He truly was nothing more than someone I used to know.

I saw the flicker of pain in Adrian’s eyes, but I didn’t soften. I couldn’t afford to.

---

Emma smiled politely at him anyway. “Thank you again for picking up my ball, Mister.”

Adrian’s expression softened as he looked at her. “You’re welcome.”

He studied her for a moment longer than necessary. The way she tilted her head when she smiled. The shape of her eyes. The tiny dimple that appeared on her left cheek when she grinned. Something about her felt strangely familiar to him—enough to make him look twice, but not enough for him to understand why.

---

Before the moment could stretch any further, the kindergarten principal walked over with a warm smile. She greeted me first, then turned to Emma.

“Emma has been telling everyone how excited she was that her mommy could come today,” the principal said fondly.

She then asked Emma to join the other children for a group photograph. Emma happily ran off, her earlier shyness forgotten.

Adrian watched her go, unable to take his eyes off the little girl. He couldn’t explain the strange pull he felt, but it was there—quiet, insistent, unsettling.

---

With Emma temporarily distracted, Adrian turned back to me. His voice was low. “I’ve been looking for you.”

His voice carried none of the confidence I remembered. It sounded careful.

Almost uncertain. As though he already knew he had no right to ask anything of me anymore.

Five years ago, hearing those words would have filled me with hope.

Today...they only reminded me that he had started looking far too late.

I finally met his eyes fully. “You found me.”

A painful silence stretched between us. He took a small step closer. “Please… give me five minutes.”

I shook my head, my walls firmly in place. “You had seven years.”

The words escaped before I could stop them.

Adrian froze.

I could see him replaying the sentence in his mind. Seven years.

I had counted from the day everything between us truly began falling apart. From the promises, From the lies to the future we had planned together.

I

didn't explain myself.I simply turned away before he could ask what I meant.

I walked away before he could respond, my legs feeling unsteady beneath me.

---

The event coordinator began calling the children forward one by one for their certificates. Her voice rang out clearly across the yard.

“Emma Carter.”

The name echoed in Adrian's mind. Carter.

He hadn't heard that surname spoken aloud in years.

Memories came rushing back without permission.Countless evenings teasing Ava by calling her "Miss Carter."

Signing birthday cards with the same surname written beneath hers. Imagining the day it would disappear because she would become Ava Hayes.

He had dreamed about that future.Somehow...t had never happened.

Adrian smiled absentmindedly at first, watching the children line up. Then the teacher continued, “Emma Carter… where’s your mother?”

His smile slowly faded. He quietly repeated the name to himself.

“Emma Carter…”

Then it hit him. Five years ago. Ava’s surname. Carter.

He looked back at the little girl with new intensity. His heartbeat quickened.

For the first time, a dangerous question entered his mind.

How old is she?
