Chapter 2

I See My Baby

I hadn't hurt anyone, but why had I to see such inhumane images in the third year after my death? I floated down and looked at the tiny baby.

This was the first time I saw that child.

I didn't cry when I was killed by Vivian.

I didn't cry when I watched Winston dissect me with his own hands.

But now, my tears were falling without stopping.

This child already had hands and feet.

If I hadn't been killed by Vivian, this child would have been over two years old by now.

He would have hugged me and called me mom.

I would have given him the best of everything.

But now, everything had been ruined.

"The identity of the deceased is still unclear. Ask them to get a DNA test."

What a pity, Winston.

If he had been more careful, he could have seen the wound I left on my belly when I saved him back then.

It was just that we missed once again.

Cayden took the things to be tested, glanced at the record paper, and continued to ask,

"Winston, how long has this person probably died? You haven't said anything yet."

Winston's hand that was packing up the case table paused for a moment, but he didn't answer. Instead, he asked Cayden, "Cayden, how long has Aryanna escaped?"

Cayden was stunned when he heard what Winston said. He then answered,

"It's been three years, Winston. Have you forgotten that after she escaped, it was you who wrote the report to withdraw all her honors and titles?"

I listened to the words in a daze. "Withdrawing my honors and titles?" I thought.

Winston knew that I valued the expedition team the most.

How could he dare?

For Vivian, he revoked what I was once most proud of!

"What's wrong, Winston? Did you think of anything?"

Cayden looked at Winston, then at me lying on the case table.

"Winston, don't think too much. Aryanna stole all the supplies and fled. She is not worthy."

Winston laughed mockingly, "Nothing big deal.

"Take a note, this person passed away about three years ago!

"OK, let's call it a day. Vivian is waiting for me at home for dinner."

I stood in a fifty-thousand-dollar Vera Wang gown, waiting to seal the merger of the century between the Singleton and English families. Everything was perfect, fragile, and obscenely expensive. But minutes before the ceremony, my brother burst into the bridal suite looking like he’d seen a ghost. He handed me a crumpled note from Jeffery, the man I was supposed to marry. "I can’t do it," the note read. "I’m choosing love." Jeffery had fled to Paris with another woman, leaving me to face two thousand guests and a family legacy that would plummet forty percent by Monday morning. Harrison Singleton, the family patriarch, didn't offer sympathy; he offered a cold ultimatum. The wedding would happen, with or without Jeffery. He stepped aside to reveal Declan Singleton, the "Wolf of Wall Street" who had spent the last year ruthlessly stripping my father’s companies for parts. To save my family from bankruptcy, I had to walk down the aisle and marry the man I hated most. At the altar, Declan didn’t just say "I do"; he claimed me with a kiss so possessive it felt like a sentencing. The humiliation was physical, a knife twisting in my gut as the world watched the "hostile takeover" of my life. I was a spoil of war, traded to a predator who believed in leverage over love. Then, Jeffery called, weeping about his mistake and begging to come back. I looked at the massive, perfectly-sized diamond Declan had already prepared for me and realized this wasn't a coincidence. I wiped away my tears and straightened my emerald silk. If I had to live in a cage, I was going to make sure I had the sharpest teeth. "Let's go to war," I whispered to my new husband.

Then, my best friend called from the airport. She saw him there, with Kennedy, locked in a Hollywood-style embrace. He wasn't just cheating. This was a long-con. He'd married me to silence me, using my DNA to help Kennedy fraudulently claim the inheritance of the powerful Olsen family-an inheritance that was rightfully mine. He canceled my credit cards, renounced his citizenship, and secretly married her in France, all while I played the part of the loving wife. When I tried to fight back, he had me drugged, imprisoned, and nearly drowned, all to protect his precious Kennedy. He thought he had erased me, a mere footnote in their grand story. But he made one fatal mistake. He didn't know I was the real Olsen heiress. And I was coming back to claim everything he stole.

Ten years ago, a storm tore through Burke Manor and destroyed my life. I was just an eight-year-old orphan hiding in the shadows when a rotted balcony railing gave way, sending the heir to the Burke fortune plummeting to the pavement. Before the ambulance even arrived, the lie was set in stone. "She pushed him!" my rival screamed, and the world instantly branded me a murderer. I was hauled away in a police cruiser, losing everything. A decade later, I was an eighteen-year-old mechanic in Queens, covered in grease and struggling to keep my Nana Rose alive. But the past doesn't stay buried. Finn Burke returned in a black Maybach, looking like a predatory emperor. When Nana suffered a massive heart attack, the hospital demanded a deposit I couldn't pay, and Finn was there with a checkbook and a contract of "indebted servitude." He bought my grandmother's life and, in exchange, he bought me. He dragged me back to the manor, locked a titanium GPS shackle around my wrist, and forced me to be his personal caretaker. He wants me to manage his pain, to bathe him, and to look at his crippled legs every day as a reminder of the "sin" he says I committed. He calls me his property, a slave to a debt I can never repay. But while massaging his legs, I felt something impossible—muscle tone and reactive tension that shouldn't exist after ten years of paralysis. He thinks he’s broken me, but he’s forgotten one thing. I’m a mechanic; I know when someone is hiding what’s under the hood. Finn Burke is lying about his legs, and I’m going to find out why, even if I have to burn this manor down to get the truth.
