The Sponsored Student’s Pretension Chapter 1

After returning home from abroad, I took a job as a driver to broaden my horizons.

However, I got hired to drive a car with my dad’s car plate, and the location I was sent to was the city’s largest nightclub.

I was suspicious about the location where I would pick up the car and the client. When I arrived, I found a bunch of people buttering up the poor student my family used to sponsor. “Have you had fun today, Mr. Morgan?” they asked.

“If you’re unhappy with the ladies tonight, we’ll make sure there are better ones tomorrow night!”

It was only when he called me that I realized he was my client.

I went and questioned him about why he was driving my dad’s car, but he kicked me to the ground. “How dare a mere driver try to scam me? Get down on your knees and kiss my feet!”

Then, he ordered his bodyguards to hold me down. They made me do as he asked. He went so far as to press cigarettes into my face, burning me.

I withstood the pain and sent a photo of my dad’s car to my family’s group chat.

[Dad, why are you going to Dreamscape behind Mom’s back and hiring girls for a night out?]

I was confused when I received the request for a driver. The car had my dad’s car plate.

Dad did not like nightclubs, so what was he doing here?

In the next second, I got a call from the client. The man’s tone was impatient. “Why aren’t you here yet? If Mr. Morgan gets upset, I’ll complain about you!”

I did not hear the words very clearly. I only thought that something had happened to my dad. Thus, I sped toward Dreamscape, the nightclub, on my motorcycle.

When I reached Dreamscape’s entrance, I saw a group of skimpily dressed men and women fluttering around a man who was walking out.

“Bye, Mr. Morgan!”

“You have to come back again, Mr. Morgan!”

I quickly recognized the man as Steven Anders.

He was a poor student whom my family was sponsoring. So, why were people calling him Mr. Morgan, and in such a fawning tone?

Steven tapped his foot and impatiently glanced at his watch. He muttered, “Where’s the driver you hired? Where’s he gone to?”

After saying that, the bodyguard beside him hurriedly grabbed his phone and made a call. My phone immediately started buzzing. That was when I realized he was my client tonight.

Before I could react, Steven spotted me.

He was stunned at first. Then, he saw the driver’s uniform I was wearing and burst into laughter.

He walked toward me and said unkindly, “Cameron?”

He reached out a hand and poked me hard in the shoulder. His tone was disdainful as he said, “In such dire straits now, are you? What are you doing working as a driver?”

The heavily made-up woman in his arms covered her mouth and laughed at this. “You know this driver, Mr. Morgan? He looks destitute! It really brings down your image.”

Steven laughed even louder at this. He slapped his leg and said, “He’s been like this since high school. He always acted so high and mighty because of his grades.”

I did not say anything. I just watched him stonily.

He threw his car keys at me hard. “What a shame. What’s the use of having good grades? You still have to drive me around in the end.

“By the way, my dad gave me this car, so you’d better be careful with it. If you damage it, you won’t be able to afford to pay for it even if you work the rest of your life!”

The people around chimed in with praise and admiration. “What a great dad you have, Mr. Morgan. I’m so jealous!”

“That’s right. You’re his only son, so Morgan Group will be yours one day. Don’t forget us when that time comes!”

I felt a chill when I heard all that.

It was true that Steven and I had been in high school together. Back then, he was so poor that he could not afford the school fees. It was because I pitied him that I begged my dad to sponsor him in secret.

After graduation, Dad even got him a job as an assistant.

Tonight, though, Steven was pretending to be the heir of the Morgan family and was hamming it up.

I clenched the keys in my hand and could not help but ask, “Why are you driving my dad’s car?”

Silence reigned once I said those words.

A few seconds later, everyone burst into laughter. “What? How dare you claim such a thing?”

Steven quickly reacted and kicked me in the chest. “You really think you’re so high and mighty, Cameron?”

He pointed at the car in the distance and roared, “Get it through your head! That’s not the kind of car trash like you will ever get to touch! Don’t ever think you can go pretending to be a member of the Morgan family!”

I looked where he was pointing and scoffed to myself.

The car was only a BMW M5, but it was apparently fancy enough to get Steven acting so arrogantly.

I stood back up and threw the keys back at him. I said evenly, “The person who should be warned against dinging someone else’s car is you.”

After saying that, I turned to walk off. However, before I could take more than one step, Steven scoffed loudly. Several bodyguards instantly came up to block my way. “Did Mr. Morgan say you could go?”

I did not look back and was rewarded with another kick. I lost my balance and fell to the ground.

I looked up and saw Steven standing over me. His hands were in his pockets, and he looked displeased. There was a vicious look in his eyes as he said, “Drag him into the back alley.”
