Chapter 4

My attorney spent three hours dismantling Julian's first draft.

Nora Bell, a compact woman with silver-framed glasses and no patience for billionaires, crossed out the morality clause, doubled the independent severance trust, and added language protecting every campaign or strategy I created at Sterling Group.

Julian accepted each change without complaint.

"Clause fourteen," Nora said, tapping the page. "My client retains the right to live separately at any time. No surveillance in her private suite. No medical information released without written consent."

"Agreed," Julian said.

I studied him across the conference table. We were on the top floor of Sterling Group headquarters, with Manhattan winter light reflecting off the windows. He had given me a pen, a lawyer, and room to say no. That did not make the arrangement normal, but it made it mine.

I signed.

Julian added his name below mine. "Congratulations, Mrs. Sterling."

"At work, I remain Chloe Evans until I decide otherwise."

"Of course."

Two hours later, his car passed through iron gates and climbed a private road toward a stone manor overlooking the Hudson. I had expected luxury. I had not expected scale: three wings, terraced gardens under snow, and enough windows to reflect the entire gray sky.

A small group of staff waited inside the foyer rather than forming the ceremonial line Julian's house manager had apparently proposed.

An older man stepped forward. "Welcome, Mrs. Sterling. I am Elias Henderson, the house manager. Your suite is ready, and the kitchen can prepare anything your physician approved."

"Thank you, Elias. Please call me Chloe when we are not entertaining."

His expression warmed. "Certainly."

Julian led me upstairs, keeping a respectful distance. My suite occupied the west wing and included a bedroom, sitting room, office, and private terrace. The closet held clothing in my size, but only a practical capsule wardrobe: soft sweaters, trousers, coats, and several business suits.

"I told the stylist no evening gowns until you chose them yourself," Julian said.

"You told a stylist to buy me clothes at all."

"Your suitcase contained three shirts and one pair of shoes."

"It also contained my dignity."

"Then we will make sure no one unpacks without permission."

That answer disarmed me.

He showed me the lock on the bedroom door and the separate security panel. "Only you and Elias have access. My code does not open this wing."

"You built that into the system already?"

"I listened when you said control mattered."

On the desk, Elias had left a printed schedule from a private nurse, a follow-up appointment with Dr. Patel, and a list of meals approved for anemia recovery. Nothing was presented as an order. Each page had a blank box beside it labeled Accept, Decline, or Reschedule.

"Your staff did this?" I asked.

"At my request," Julian said. "But they answer to you in this wing. If you want a different nurse, different meals, or no staff at all, say so."

I marked the medical appointment Accept and the private nurse Reschedule. The small act should not have felt revolutionary. It did. For the first time in years, care arrived without a bill attached to my obedience.

At dinner, we sat at opposite ends of a table designed for twenty. The distance felt ridiculous, so I carried my plate to the chair two seats from his.

"This is still a contract," I said when he raised an eyebrow. "But I refuse to shout over the centerpiece."

He moved the flowers aside. "Reasonable."

I ate more than I had in weeks. When my appetite faded, Julian changed the subject from the hospital to work.

"Your Northstar research identified a retention problem our executives missed," he said. "How would you fix it now?"

I forgot the chandeliers while explaining. The answer grew into a launch plan, then a staffing model. Julian asked specific questions and took notes on his phone. He never interrupted to restate my ideas as his own.

"You are offering me marketing director because of this?" I asked.

"I am offering it because you have been doing the work without the authority."

"The existing vice president will hate me."

"Then he can outperform you or resign."

For the first time since the hospital, I smiled without forcing it.

After dinner, I stood on my private terrace wrapped in a wool coat. The city glowed beyond the dark line of the river. Safety felt unfamiliar enough to make me restless.

Movement near the lower gate caught my attention. A white cargo van idled beyond the fence, headlights off. It rolled forward, reversed, then edged toward the service entrance.

The terrace door opened behind me.

A broad-shouldered man in a black security jacket stopped several feet away. "Mrs. Sterling, I'm Marcus Hale, director of estate security. I apologize for entering your wing. The exterior camera flagged a vehicle near the perimeter."

"That van?"

Marcus touched his earpiece. His expression sharpened as someone spoke on the other end.

"The driver identified himself as Liam Miller," he said. "He claims you stole property from his apartment and is demanding to know whether you are here."

My fingers tightened on the stone railing.

"How did he find this address?"

"He followed one of the hospital transport vehicles until our team intercepted him near the private road. He has not entered the property."

Julian appeared in the doorway behind Marcus, his face unreadable.

"You said I choose the response," I reminded him.

"You do."

I looked down at the van. Four years of excuses seemed to fit inside its rusted frame.

"Record the interaction," I told Marcus. "Tell him I left voluntarily, that he may arrange a supervised exchange for any property he believes is his, and that any attempt to cross the gate will be reported as trespass."

Marcus nodded. "Anything else?"

"Yes. Ask him whether he called an ambulance when he found blood outside apartment 4B."

Marcus relayed the question through his radio.

A minute later, his gaze returned to mine.

"He says he assumed you were being dramatic."

Whatever remained of my old life went still inside me.

"Then tell him to leave," I said. "And save the recording."
