Chapter 5

Liam did not leave quietly.

By morning, he was back outside apartment 4B, shouting at the landlord and claiming I had stolen two thousand dollars in startup cash. Julian parked across the street because I had asked to see the final exchange myself. I sat behind the tinted window with Nora beside me and Marcus waiting near the entrance.

"There was never two thousand dollars," I said. "He spent his last paycheck on game upgrades."

Nora opened a folder on her lap. "The landlord's statements confirm two months of unpaid rent. Your bank records show you paid every prior month. We have enough to separate your finances cleanly."

Across the street, Liam jabbed a finger at Mr. Russo, the building owner. "She took my money before she ran off. You owe me the deposit."

Mr. Russo looked exhausted. "There is no deposit left. It was applied to the rent you didn't pay."

Marcus crossed the street and handed Liam a thick envelope.

"Liam Miller," he said. "You are being served with a cease-and-desist notice, a formal no-contact demand, and notice that the Sterling estate has revoked any implied permission for you to enter its property. Continued harassment will support an emergency protective-order petition."

Liam tore open the envelope. "Sterling Group? What is this?"

"It is the consequence of following Ms. Sterling from a hospital to a private residence."

Liam looked toward the black car. His face changed when he recognized the shape of a luxury sedan behind dark glass.

"Chloe is in there, isn't she?" he shouted. "Tell her to come out. She owes me."

Marcus placed an acknowledgment page on the hood of a parked car. "Sign that you received the documents."

"I'm not signing anything."

Nora lowered my window just enough for my voice to carry.

"Then the process server will record refusal, Liam. It changes nothing."

He froze. "Chloe?"

I stepped out of the car, keeping Marcus between us. Snow had turned to gray slush along the curb. The bloodstain from two nights earlier was gone, washed into the gutter.

Liam stared at my clean coat and the security detail. "So this is what you do? You leave me with the rent and hide behind some rich guy?"

"The lease was in both our names. Nora has sent my share of the lawful balance directly to Mr. Russo. Your gaming equipment and personal debts are yours."

"You supported the company."

"There is no company."

His face reddened. "You'll regret saying that when Odyssey launches."

"Maybe." I met his eyes. "But I will never regret leaving."

I turned to Mr. Russo and handed him the apartment key in a small evidence envelope. "I'm sorry for the trouble."

"You don't owe me an apology," he said quietly.

Liam stepped forward, but Marcus blocked him with one arm.

"You killed my future!" Liam shouted.

The accusation struck, but it no longer entered me.

"No," I said. "I stopped financing it."

I returned to the car. Through the rear window, I watched Liam crumple the notice and then smooth it out again when he realized the signature line documented service. He looked small in front of the building where he had once made me feel trapped.

Nora filed the financial separation that afternoon. My name came off the utilities, the landlord closed the joint ledger, and the agency that had fired me received a preservation demand for every email connected to my termination. Julian did not make the calls for me. He gave me a conference room, handed me the phone, and sat on the far side of the table while I reclaimed each piece myself.

At the hospital follow-up a week later, Dr. Patel told me my anemia was improving. He also told me grief would not follow a schedule. I left with iron tablets, a therapist's number, and the first quiet certainty that recovery could be work rather than surrender.

That was the last time I saw Liam for four years.

The marriage that began as a boardroom arrangement changed by degrees rather than declarations. I recovered. I returned to work. My first campaign as marketing director became Sterling Group's strongest launch in a decade. When the agency that fired me settled the wrongful-termination claim, I used part of the money to create an emergency grant for pregnant employees facing housing loss.

Julian and I learned each other's silences, argued over strategy, and eventually stopped using separate ends of the dining table. He never entered my suite without knocking. I stopped locking the door sometime in the second year and did not realize it until he pointed it out.

Two years after the contract was supposed to expire, we renewed our vows without lawyers present.

A year later, Leo was born.

On the morning of his preschool orientation, I found him in the manor greenhouse, pulling dandelions from a planter that had never contained dandelions before.

"Mom, look." He held up the weeds proudly. "I rescued the flowers."

"Those are weeds, sweetheart."

"They have yellow flowers. That means they count."

Elias appeared at the glass door with Leo's navy blazer over one arm. "The car is ready whenever you are."

"Thank you." I crouched to brush soil from Leo's knees. "Blue tie or red tie?"

"Blue. It makes me look serious."

"You are three. You are allowed not to look serious."

"Dad says serious people get better snacks in meetings."

I made a note to discuss Julian's executive training methods.

Oakridge Academy sat behind brick walls and iron gates on a tree-lined avenue. Luxury cars filled the drop-off lane. I parked near the crosswalk and reached for Leo's backpack.

A harsh voice carried through my open window.

"Pick that up. Now."

A campus security guard stood over an elderly custodian, kicking a paper cup toward him. The guard's uniform fit badly, but the contempt in his posture was familiar.

"The wind knocked it over," the custodian said.

"I don't care. Do your job."

The guard turned toward the line of cars.

Four years disappeared in a single breath.

Liam Miller stood ten feet from my son's school gate, an Oakridge security badge pinned to his chest.
