Chapter 3

The brass key rested on the hospital blanket between us.

I looked from it to Julian. "You found me in a snowstorm and decided I should move into your house?"

"Not exactly."

His tone was too measured. I knew that tone from contract negotiations. It meant he had already considered every objection I was about to make.

"Then explain exactly," I said.

Julian settled into the vinyl chair beside my bed. "My board is voting next month on the acquisition of Langford Systems. Two directors oppose me because they believe my personal life makes me an unstable long-term chief executive."

"Your personal life?"

"I have none. That is apparently the problem."

Despite everything, a short breath of laughter escaped me.

"The founder of Langford built the company around a family-trust structure," Julian continued. "He wants the buyer to present continuity, not a succession crisis. My board wants me married before the final vote."

I stared at him. "You are proposing a legal marriage to satisfy a corporate stereotype."

"A contractual marriage," he corrected. "Publicly credible. Privately defined."

"And you chose the unemployed woman recovering from a miscarriage because she looks stable?"

"I chose the strategist who challenged my media budget in front of twelve senior executives and proved every one of them wrong. I chose the woman who worked two jobs while carrying an entire household. Your circumstances changed. Your ability did not."

The praise landed in a place Liam had spent years hollowing out. I distrusted it on instinct.

"What do I receive?" I asked.

Julian did not flinch at the bluntness. "A residence in your name, comprehensive health coverage, independent counsel for the contract, and the role of marketing director at Sterling Group once your physician clears you to work. If the marriage ends, you retain the residence, vested stock, and a severance trust."

"What do you receive besides the board vote?"

"A wife who understands strategy, will not mistake financial security for romance, and has every reason to value privacy."

I folded my arms carefully over my abdomen. "No physical expectations?"

"None. Separate suites. Separate finances beyond the household account. Either of us can terminate the arrangement after eighteen months."

"Children?"

His gaze softened for the first time. "Not part of the agreement."

The answer loosened something painful in my chest.

"You barely know me," I said.

"I know you rewrote the Northstar campaign in one night after your supervisor deleted your research. I know you never took credit in meetings, even when the work was yours. I know you sent half your salary to an account linked to Liam Miller and covered his rent for twenty-three months."

I stiffened. "You investigated me."

"After I found you bleeding outside his building, yes. I needed to know whether he posed a continuing threat."

"And?"

"He is financially reckless, professionally dishonest, and too self-absorbed to understand the damage he caused. My security team is monitoring the apartment."

"Call them off."

"When you are safe."

"Julian, I am not replacing one controlling man with another."

The words struck cleanly. He sat back and nodded once.

"Fair. You decide the limits. My attorney will draft nothing until your attorney approves it. The key is only an offer of temporary housing, regardless of whether you marry me."

That distinction mattered. He was not making shelter conditional on my signature.

"The hospital social worker already gave me three transitional-housing referrals," I said. "I can use one of those while I find another job."

"You can," Julian agreed. "And if that is what you choose, my driver will take you there and my attorney will make sure the agency pays the wages it withheld. The proposal remains separate."

I studied him for the trap. There was none in his wording. He was giving me an alternative he clearly disliked because he understood that a choice was only real when I could reject him.

"How long would I have to decide?"

"Seventy-two hours after discharge. Your lawyer can request more time."

"And there will be no press announcement until I sign?"

"No announcement, no photographs, and no contact with my board."

A nurse entered with a plastic bag containing my repaired phone and a discharge information packet. She checked my IV, then left us alone again.

The phone came alive with a flood of notifications. Most were automated warnings from the landlord and collection notices. One message came from Liam.

Are you done freezing your ass off? If you don't have rent money, come back and make dinner. The fridge is empty.

I read it twice.

He did not ask where I was. He did not mention the blood on the snow. He did not ask about the baby.

Julian watched my face. "What did he say?"

"He wants dinner."

The room went quiet.

"Would you like me to send someone for your belongings?" Julian asked.

"There is nothing worth retrieving."

I opened Liam's contact, blocked the number, and deleted the thread. My finger did not shake.

"I spent two years waiting for him to become the person he promised he was," I said. "He called the baby an anchor. Then he let me walk into a blizzard because selling a monitor was too much to ask."

Julian's hand tightened around the arm of his chair.

"I do not want him frightened for one night," I continued. "I want him to face every consequence he pushed onto me. The debts. The lies. The career he never built. I want the truth to catch him without me rescuing him again."

"That is not revenge," Julian said. "That is withdrawal of support."

"It will feel like revenge to him."

I picked up the brass key. Its teeth pressed into my palm, solid and real.

"I will review the marriage contract," I said. "With my own lawyer. I keep control of my career, my medical decisions, and my name in every professional setting."

"Agreed."

"And if Liam comes near me, I choose the response. You do not destroy him just to prove that you can."

Julian considered the condition. "Unless he presents an immediate threat."

"Unless he presents an immediate threat," I agreed.

He stood and extended his hand, not as a rescuer but as a negotiating partner.

I placed mine in his.

"Then we have a deal," he said.

"Not yet." I tightened my grip. "We have terms."

A faint smile touched his mouth. "Even better."
