The Secret Lover He Discarded Is The Real Heiress Chapter 1

"Killian, I need two minutes."

He didn't turn around right away. He kept his champagne flute raised, nodding at a group of investors. Finally, he shifted his weight and glanced over his shoulder.

"Not now, Serena. We are discussing the overseas merger." His voice carried that familiar, icy edge.

"It can't wait." I stepped closer, lowering my volume so the surrounding elites wouldn't hear. "Five years, Killian. You promised we would announce our engagement this month. You promised me a real place by your side."

He pinched the bridge of his nose. "I said we would discuss it when the market stabilized. Stop pushing."

"I have to push." I reached into my clutch and pulled out the folded medical paper. "I'm pregnant."

The music in the ballroom seemed to dull. Killian stared at my hand, his jaw tightening into a hard line. He didn't reach for the paper.

"Excuse me?" he whispered, his eyes narrowing.

"We are going to have a baby." I tried to smile, searching his face for the warmth he used to show me behind closed doors. "We can finally get married. Just like you promised."

"Oh, how incredibly convenient!"

The sharp, mocking voice sliced through the air. Ivy Hunter stepped out from behind a marble pillar, her diamond necklace catching the chandelier light. She walked straight into our circle, a triumphant smirk on her face.

"Ivy, keep your voice down," Killian snapped.

"Why should I?" Ivy turned to the crowd, raising her glass high. "Ladies and gentlemen! May I have your attention? We need to toast to Serena Blair. The most ambitious gold digger in the city."

Conversations stopped. Heads turned. The string quartet faltered and faded into silence.

"Ivy, stop this right now," I said, my fingers trembling as I gripped the sonogram.

"Stop what? Telling the truth?" Ivy took a step closer, her gaze locking onto Killian. "Did she tell you her parents were private equity investors, Killian? Did she spin a nice little tragic tale about losing her fortune?"

Killian looked at me. "What is she talking about?"

"She lied to you," Ivy announced to the room. "Her mother didn't work in finance. Her mother scrubbed toilets at my family’s estate. Serena is the daughter of a servant. She changed her last name and fabricated her entire life just to crawl into your bed."

The whispers started instantly. Wealthy guests pointed their manicured fingers, their eyes raking over my simple evening gown.

"Killian, let me explain," I pleaded, reaching for his arm.

He jerked away from my touch. "Don't touch me. Is it true?"

"I never said my parents were investors! You assumed that, and I was just too scared to correct you." I kept my eyes on his, desperate for him to remember our five years together. "I hid in service elevators for you. I waited in empty hotel rooms for days just to see you for an hour. I love you."

"You love my bank account," Killian sneered. The disgust on his face was absolute. There was no hesitation, no memory of the nights I held him through his panic attacks.

"I don't care about your money! Look at this!" I shoved the sonogram toward his chest. "We are having a child. Please, Killian. You know me."

He swatted the paper out of my hand. It fluttered to the marble floor.

"I don't know you at all," Killian said, his voice projecting so everyone could hear. "You are a liar. A manipulative, scheming fraud. You thought you could trap me with a pregnancy? You thought a bastard child would force me to marry a maid's daughter?"

"I didn't trap you!"

"The engagement is off," he declared loudly. "There never was one, to be clear. But any association between us ends right this second."

"You can't do this." My chest tightened, squeezing my lungs. "You promised me."

"I promised a woman of standing," he shot back. "Not a rat from the gutters looking for a meal ticket."

The crowd erupted into cruel laughter.

"Did you really think Killian Mercer would marry the help?" a woman mocked from the front row.

"She actually brought a fake ultrasound to a gala. How pathetic," a man added, swirling his whiskey.

I stood in the center of their ridicule. My vision blurred, but the tears didn't fall. Instead, a short, hollow laugh escaped my throat.

Killian frowned. "Are you insane?"

"No." I laughed again, louder this time. The absurdity of it all coated my tongue like ash. "I spent five years shrinking myself to fit into your shadows. I thought you were just protecting your company. But you were just ashamed of me."

"Get out of my sight, Serena. Before I have security throw you out."

Ivy stepped up, linking her arm through Killian's. "You heard him. Take your little piece of paper and leave. You're dirtying the floor."

I bent down and picked up the sonogram. The edges were crumpled from where his shoe had nearly stepped on it. I clutched it to my chest.

As I straightened up, my eyes swept past the jeering faces. Past the women covering their mouths to hide their sneers. Past the men looking at me like I was garbage.

Then, I saw him.

In the far corner, half-hidden by the heavy velvet drapes, stood Lucian Caldwell. The city's most elusive medical prodigy and heir to the Caldwell fortune. He held a glass of water, leaning casually against the wall.

He wasn't laughing.

His expression remained perfectly calm, but his sharp, intelligent eyes were fixed on Ivy. He tilted his head slightly, his gaze tracking the aggressive posture Ivy maintained. Then, his eyes shifted to me.

There was no mockery in his stare. Instead, he looked at me with a quiet, intense calculation. He saw the truth. He saw through Ivy’s theatrical performance and Killian’s fragile ego.

Lucian gave me a barely perceptible nod. A silent acknowledgment of the war zone I found myself in.

"Security!" Killian barked, waving his hand toward the entrance. "Remove this woman."

Two burly guards in black suits pushed through the crowd, heading straight for me.

"Don't touch me," I said, my voice finally steady. I turned my back on Killian and Ivy, clutching my purse. "I know the way out."

I walked toward the grand double doors, the sea of elites parting to let me through. They shrank away as if my poverty was contagious.

"Make sure she doesn't steal any silverware on her way out!" Ivy called after me, sparking another wave of laughter.

I kept my chin high and pushed through the heavy oak doors, stepping out into the biting night air. The cold slapped my cheeks, waking me up from the five-year nightmare I had called a relationship.

I walked down the grand stone steps, wrapping my thin shawl tighter around my shoulders. I had nowhere to go. My apartment was in Killian's name. My bank accounts were linked to his firm. He would freeze them by morning.

A sleek black car pulled up to the curb, tires whispering against the asphalt. The rear window rolled down smoothly.

"Get in."

I froze on the bottom step.

Lucian Caldwell sat in the back seat, the faint streetlights illuminating his sharp jawline and perfectly tailored suit. He pushed the heavy car door open from the inside.

"Why would I get in a car with you?" I asked, gripping the strap of my purse.

"Because your ex is currently freezing your assets, and it's twenty degrees out here," Lucian replied, his tone even and unbothered. "And because I know Ivy Hunter is lying."

I stared at him, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

"Are you getting in, Serena?" he asked. "Or are you going to let them win?"
