Chapter 2

The private elevator ascended in silence, a mirrored box of polished steel. Foster Deron stood beside Eleanor, his presence as unobtrusive and absolute as a shadow. He smelled of clean laundry and ruthless efficiency.

The doors opened directly onto the executive floor. The air was different up here—thinner, colder, pressurized with unspoken power. The only sound was the click of Eleanor's new, sensible heels on the Italian marble. Heads bowed over keyboards as they passed, but eyes darted, hungry with curiosity, trying to decipher the identity of the woman with Deron.

He stopped before a set of massive mahogany doors. A simple brass plate read: SEBASTIAN VANDERBILT, CEO.

"This is Mr. Vanderbilt's office," Deron stated, his voice flat. "Your desk is right outside."

Eleanor saw it. It wasn't a desk so much as a command post, positioned directly in front of the CEO's door. There were no cubicle walls, no privacy screens. It was an island of exposure, designed so that her every move, every call, every breath, would be under the scrutiny of the entire floor.

"Your duties are listed in this file." Deron handed her a sleek tablet. "First rule: anticipate Mr. Vanderbilt's needs. Second rule: never let him wait. Third rule: you have no private life."

Eleanor took the tablet. The cool metal was a dead weight in her hands. "Understood."

A wave of cloying, expensive perfume announced an arrival before she even saw the woman. A figure in a violently pink Chanel suit, walking with the arrogant stride of someone who had never been told 'no,' rounded the corner. Platinum blonde hair, lips a slash of fuchsia.

Eleanor's body went rigid. A jolt, like touching a live wire.

Amber Vanderbilt.

Her high school nightmare. The girl who had made her life a living hell. And, as rumor had it, a distant cousin of Sebastian's who was desperately, publicly, trying to make the relationship much closer.

Amber's eyes, the color of a washed-out summer sky, landed on Eleanor. First, a flicker of confusion. Then, recognition dawned, followed by a thick, curdling wave of contempt.

Her gaze raked over Eleanor's conservative gray suit, a sneer twisting her perfect lips. "Well, well, look what the cat dragged in. Eleanor Baldwin. I thought you'd be designing low-income housing in Queens by now."

Eleanor's hands curled into fists at her sides, her nails digging into her palms. She forced a placid, professional smile onto her face. "Hello, Amber. Nice to see you again."

The lack of her last name was a deliberate, subtle jab. Amber's face tightened. She hated being reminded she was a Vanderbilt by association, not by birthright.

"You have no right to be here," Amber hissed, her voice low and venomous.

In her hand, Amber held a steaming cup of coffee. She flicked her wrist—a gesture so controlled it looked rehearsed—and "stumbled." The hot, dark liquid flew through the air, aimed directly at Eleanor's chest.

A few muffled gasps echoed in the quiet office. Everyone was watching.

But Eleanor didn't flinch or cry out. Years of street survival had wired the reaction into her. A tiny, almost imperceptible shift of her core, a twist of her hips, and the scalding coffee missed her, splashing onto the priceless Persian rug behind her with a hiss. A few dark drops spotted her skirt. She was unharmed.

She didn't even glance at her skirt.

Instantly, she knelt, pulling tissues from a box on her new desk and pressing them against the stain on the rug. Her movements were calm, efficient. With her other hand, she pressed the intercom button on her desk phone. "This is the CEO's office assistant. We have a spill on the executive floor. Requesting immediate cleanup crew." Her voice was a cool, even stream of professional jargon.

Amber stood frozen, her mouth slightly agape. She had expected screams. Tears. A satisfying scene. Instead, she got… this. A few of the watching employees straightened in their chairs. The pity in their sidelong glances had cooled into something quieter—almost appraising.

Eleanor stood up, her face a mask of polite concern. She met Amber's stunned gaze. "Ms. Vanderbilt, the floor is slippery. Please be careful."

Eleanor knew Amber well. In high school, Amber had been Craig Sterling's wealthy circle ringleader—the one who had orchestrated Eleanor's humiliation to keep her in her place. Now, Amber was trying to mark her territory again.

Let her throw her tantrums. Eleanor hadn't endured years of silence just to squabble over spilled coffee. She was here for the terminal access at the CEO's assistant desk—the only portal containing the confidential audit logs of the Sterling Group's loans.

The words were a slap, delivered with a smile.

Just then, the mahogany doors to the CEO's office swung open.

Sebastian Vanderbilt stood there, a towering silhouette against the light from his office. His eyes took in the scene in a single, sweeping glance: the dark stain on the rug, Amber's furious, thwarted expression, and finally, his gaze settled on Eleanor, and the damp splotches on her skirt.

A cleaning crew, summoned with terrifying speed, bustled past, breaking the tense silence.

Sebastian said nothing. He simply looked at Eleanor and lifted his chin, a silent command.

"In my office. Now."

Eleanor rolled her shoulders back, not to steady herself but to settle into the role she'd come to play. Amber's glare burned at the nape of her neck, but Eleanor didn't give her the satisfaction of a flinch. She stepped through the door as if the office had been waiting for her all along.
