Chapter 3

The next few days were a special kind of hell.

Amber Vanderbilt, humiliated and enraged, had pulled strings. Her father, a board member, had manufactured an "urgent project" for Eleanor. It was a week's worth of work for an entire team. The deadline was three days.

Everyone knew it was revenge. No one said a word. And Sebastian Vanderbilt, from his throne behind the mahogany doors, remained silent. His silence was a form of permission.

Eleanor didn't complain. She didn't ask for help. She became a machine. Three hours of sleep a night. A diet of black coffee and protein bars. Her world shrank to the glowing screen of her computer.

It was the third night. The entire floor was a cavern of darkness, punctuated by the single, lonely glow of her desk lamp.

She typed the final word of the report. Clicked send.

The recipients: Sebastian Vanderbilt. Copied: Amber Vanderbilt, and the entire board of directors involved in the project.

Amber thought this impossible three-day workload was a punishment. She didn't realize she had handed Eleanor the master key. Embedded deep within those complex financial models was the backdoor network to the Sterling Group's secret offshore accounts.

Eleanor had spent seventy-two sleepless hours not just completing Amber's trap, but quietly routing the evidence of Anthony Sterling's corporate fraud directly into Sebastian's private server.

The 'Sent' notification blinked once and disappeared. Eleanor leaned back in her chair and pressed a hand to her sternum, where her heart beat slow and steady. So that's what it felt like—winning. It felt like nothing at all. And she could live with that.

She'd been running on caffeine and spite for three days. Now the caffeine had worn off, and the spite had nowhere left to go. The first cramp hit her like a blade—a fist twisting deep in her stomach. Cold sweat beaded on her forehead, and with it came the smell of mold and old sweat: the equipment room. The locked door.

She needed water. Hot water.

She pushed herself to her feet, but the world tilted. Black spots danced in her vision. Her legs turned to water.

Leaning heavily on the wall, she shuffled towards the staff pantry. Each step was a battle. She made it through the door before her strength gave out completely. She slid down the cool, smooth surface of the wall, curling into a tight ball on the floor.

She bit down on her lip, hard, stifling the groan that rose in her throat. The metallic taste of blood filled her mouth. She would not make a sound. It was the last piece of pride she had left.

The pain brought the memories with it. The darkness of the high school equipment room. The cold concrete floor. The sound of Amber and her friends laughing on the other side of the locked door. The same helpless cramping in her stomach. The familiar suffocating panic.

Her consciousness was starting to fray at the edges when the pantry door swung open.

Sebastian Vanderbilt stood there. He had been on his way out, but the report she sent was missing a key financial model attachment. He had been about to call her, but some strange impulse had made him walk back instead.

And he found her.

Curled on the floor like a wounded animal. Her face was ashen, her forehead slick with sweat, her lips bitten raw.

This was not the woman he knew. Not the cool, defiant, challenging creature who had signed his NDA. This raw, uncontained vulnerability irritated him. It was a variable he couldn't control.

"What are you doing?" His voice was a shard of ice in the quiet room. "Playing dead to gain sympathy?"

The sound of his voice pierced her haze. She tried to uncurl, to stand, but the pain was a white-hot poker in her gut.

Sebastian's brow furrowed. He hated things that were broken. He hated mess. He hated weakness. Especially in something that belonged to him.

He strode forward and grabbed her wrist, hauling her partially upright. Her skin was shockingly cold. Her wrist, delicate in his large hand, felt as fragile as a bird's wing.

Eleanor flinched at the contact, a full-body tremor that was pure, instinctual fear.

He ignored it. His thumb pressed against the inside of her wrist, finding her pulse. Fast. Thready. Weak.

He held it for a beat longer than necessary. Then he let go. She slumped back against the wall.

He pulled out his phone, his movements sharp and angry. He dialed from memory. "Carlisle, get to my office. Now. And bring your damn medical kit."

He hung up without waiting for a reply.

He didn't look at her again. He bent down, slid one arm under her knees and the other behind her back, and lifted her.

A small strangled sound left her. He had her. Trapped. His grip was iron, his chest unyielding. She could smell the cold cleanness of him—snow and cedar—and feel the strength behind it, terrifying in its stillness.

She wanted to fight, to scream, but her body had nothing left. Her head dropped to his chest. His heartbeat was a slow, solid thud under her ear; hers was a frantic flutter.

He carried her out of the pantry toward his office without slowing. When he shifted her in his arms, his thumb caught on the raised line of an old scar beneath her collarbone. His jaw tightened. Not concern. Something sharper, more possessive. A flaw in the thing he had only just begun to claim.

He kicked open the door to a private lounge she hadn't known existed and deposited her unceremoniously onto a soft leather sofa.

He stood over her for a moment, a dark, imposing figure.

"Don't die in my office," he said, his voice flat and cold. "It's a hassle to clean up."

He turned, walked out, and closed the door, plunging her into blessed darkness.
