Chapter 2

My fingertip hovered a millimeter above the glowing glass. Adaeze from Veller Capital. About Calvert, we...

The heavy mechanical grind of the garage door motor vibrated through the dining room floorboards.

"I am ordering pizza," Dorian had sneered earlier. But he was back early.

I locked the screen. The message could wait. I slipped the phone into my pocket, grabbed the hospital ledger, and retreated to the guest bedroom before my stepson could drag his muddy sneakers through the hallway and demand to know why I was still awake.

At ten o'clock the next morning, the Calvert Industries boardroom smelled of stale coffee and expensive cologne.

Marcus and Julian, the senior board members, sat opposite me at the long mahogany table. Theo stood at the head, straightening his crimson tie. The emergency vote had taken less than ten minutes.

"Congratulations, CEO Marchetti," Julian said, leaning back in his leather chair. He spun a silver pen between his fingers. "Now, let us discuss cutting the dead weight. The creditors want blood."

Theo picked up a thick stack of printed resolutions. "I have already prepared the restructuring plan. Resolution one: we are dissolving the in-house legal department."

Silence dropped over the room.

Marcus stopped spinning his pen. He frowned, tapping the metal against his notepad. "Your wife runs that division, Theo. Sabine has handled our contracts for five years. She knows the Veller Capital merger details better than anyone."

"Exactly," Theo replied. He kept his eyes fixed on Marcus, refusing to look down the table at me. "To avoid the appearance of nepotism, we must outsource to an independent firm. The board demands transparency. I will not have my new leadership questioned over family ties."

I sat at the far end of the table. My hands rested flat on the polished wood.

"You are terminating the entire department?" Julian asked, raising an eyebrow. "That is six employees, Theo. The severance alone will hit this quarter's margins hard."

"The long-term savings will offset it," Theo countered smoothly. "We need to trim the budget to satisfy the creditors. Sabine understands the necessity of this sacrifice."

"Is that right, Sabine?" Marcus leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table. "You are willing to step down?"

"Theo and I discussed the company's future last night," I lied, keeping my tone completely flat. "We agreed that sacrifices must be made."

"Very noble," Julian smirked, not bothering to hide his amusement.

"I am doing what is best for Calvert Industries," Theo interrupted, his tone hardening. "We will hire outside counsel by Friday. Now, if there are no further objections, I will sign the order."

He uncapped his Montblanc pen.

I watched him press the gold nib to the termination document. The sharp scratch of metal on paper echoed in the quiet room. The downward force of his wrist, the tight set of his jaw—it mirrored the exact motion I had used nine years ago in that downtown notary's office. I had signed away my 8th Avenue apartment to save this very company from ruin.

Only the direction of the blade had changed. Today, he was cutting me out.

Theo's hand moved swiftly across the page. He finished his signature with a harsh underline. "The transition begins immediately. Meeting adjourned."

Chairs scraped loudly against the hardwood floor. The executives gathered their briefcases and filed out, murmuring congratulations and discussing golf handicaps.

Felix, my junior counsel, approached my chair. He carried a stack of manila folders, his knuckles white against the cardboard. He had transferred to my department just six months ago, eager to learn corporate law. Now, he was collateral damage in my husband's power play.

He slid the top folder toward me. A small, sharply folded square of paper slipped from beneath it, landing right next to my thumb.

"I kept a scan," Felix whispered, his eyes darting toward the door to ensure Marcus and Julian were gone.

I did not unfold it. I picked up the square and slid it between the pages of the hospital ledger sitting inside my open tote bag.

"Thank you, Felix," I said. "Clear out your desk by noon."

He leaned closer, his voice shaking with anger. "Are you going to fight this, Sabine? He is firing us to make himself look ruthless to the board. It is completely unjustified."

"Just pack your things," I told him. "Do not argue with HR about the severance. Take the package and leave quietly."

"But he cannot just—"

"Felix. Go."

He swallowed hard, nodded once, and hurried out of the room.

Theo marched toward the exit, buttoning his suit jacket. He paused right behind my chair. Half a second.

"Don't make a scene," he murmured, his voice pitched for my ears only. "People are watching."

I turned my head slightly, catching his profile. "I haven't raised my voice once, Theo."

"Keep it that way. I will have my assistant transfer your personal items to the house this afternoon."

"You are too generous."

"Stop playing the victim," he snapped softly. "I told you last night I needed to secure my position. This secures it."

"By publicly humiliating me?"

"By proving I put the company before my own wife," he corrected. "It is just business, Sabine. You can find another job."

He walked out without waiting for a reply, his leather shoes striking the tile sharply down the hallway.

I remained seated until the boardroom was completely empty. The institutional humiliation hung in the air, thick and suffocating. He had used me as a stepping stone, offering up my career to prove his loyalty to a board that barely respected him.

I picked up my tote bag and walked out.

The stainless steel doors of the executive elevator slid shut, sealing me in silence. I pressed the button for the lobby garage. The car descended with a smooth, continuous hum.

I reached into my bag and pulled out the ledger. My fingers found the folded square Felix had slipped me.

I smoothed the paper flat against the leather cover.

It was a photocopy of the termination resolution Theo had just signed. The standard legal jargon filled the top half, outlining the dissolution of the department and the immediate revocation of my building access.

My eyes tracked down to the bottom of the page.

Theo's sprawling signature anchored the left side of the approval line.

Right next to it, resting on the secondary authorization line under the heading of 'Majority Shareholder Proxy', sat another name.

Dorian Marchetti.
