Chapter 3

The elevator doors slid apart with a hollow chime, spilling me into the concrete basement of the garage. I folded Felix's scan, pressing the sharp paper crease between my thumb and forefinger, and slipped it back inside the leather ledger.

Dorian's signature. Fifteen years old, playing fantasy games while his grandfather died, yet legally authorizing the destruction of my career.

I drove home through the midday traffic, my hands resting lightly on the steering wheel. The city moved around me, indifferent and fast, while my mind stayed locked on the ink strokes of my stepson's name.

When I unlocked the front door of the house, the silence inside felt different from the night before. It was occupied.

I walked into the dining room, dropping my keys onto the sideboard.

Dorian stood at the edge of the mahogany table. He occupied the exact spot where he had pushed away my chicken soup nine years running, the exact spot where he had complained about every holiday meal I ever cooked. Today, he wasn't wearing his gaming headphones. He leaned over a thick stack of legal papers, his knuckles resting on the polished wood.

"About time you left," Dorian said, tossing a silver ballpoint pen onto the center of the documents. It clattered against the wood, rolling to a stop against the margin. "Do not make this hard on my dad."

I walked slowly to the table and looked down.

Marital Dissolution Agreement.

My eyes tracked across the property division clauses on the third page. I read the cold, printed paragraphs twice. There was no mention of the riverside apartment on 8th Avenue—the one I had mortgaged for one point eight million dollars to pull Calvert Industries out of bankruptcy nine years ago. There was no clause accounting for the two years of private nursing fees I had paid out of my own pocket while his grandfather withered away in the hospital.

They had stripped the ledger clean. They had stripped me clean.

I looked up from the pages and fixed my eyes on the boy I had raised since he was six years old.

"Are you sure about this?" I asked quietly.

Dorian let out a short, sharp laugh. He crossed his arms over his chest, his posture mimicking his father's boardroom arrogance to perfection.

"You really thought you were part of this family?" he sneered, his mouth twisting. "My mom is coming back to the city next month. We do not need a babysitter anymore, Sabine. Just sign it so we can move on."

I did not scream. I did not remind him of the nights I sat up cooling his fevers, or the parent-teacher conferences I attended while his father was traveling for work.

I picked up the silver pen. The metal felt cold against my fingers.

I flipped to the final page, aligned the tip of the pen with the dotted line, and signed my name. The ink flowed smoothly, sealing nine years of unpaid servitude into a closed file.

I set the pen down. It made a soft click against the table.

"Done," I said.

Dorian blinked, his arms dropping slightly to his sides. He had braced for a screaming match, for tears, for begging. My immediate compliance caught him off guard, leaving him staring at the signature with parted lips.

I turned my back on him and walked toward the built-in cabinet in the corner of the dining room. I opened the glass door and bypassed the crystal wine glasses, the silver serving trays, and the expensive porcelain plates Theo had bought for company dinners.

I reached for only two items resting on the bottom shelf: the worn hospital ledger and the thick cardboard folder containing the original mortgage copy of my 8th Avenue apartment.

I tucked them firmly under my arm and closed the cabinet door. Everything else—the jewelry, the clothes Theo had bought for country club events, the furniture I had selected to turn this house into a home—I left untouched.

I turned around to head for the stairs to grab my small overnight suitcase.

Theo stood in the arched entryway of the living room.

He wore his suit jacket unbuttoned, one hand buried in his pocket, holding a glass of sparkling water in the other. He had been standing there the entire time. He had watched his fifteen-year-old son slide divorce papers across the table to his wife. He had listened to the boy insult me, and he had not uttered a single word.

His silence was an absolute endorsement.

"The settlement is fair, Sabine," Theo said finally, taking a slow sip from his glass. "The lawyers ensured you won't leave empty-handed. There is a small alimony clause for the next six months to help you get on your feet."

I walked past the dining table, stopping three feet away from him.

"Six months of alimony," I repeated, my voice dropping lower than usual. "For nine years of your life. For your father's life."

"Do not drag my father into this," Theo warned, his jaw tightening. "I told you this morning—it is about securing the future. Dorian wants his mother back in his life. I will not stand in the way of my son's happiness."

"Your son's happiness," I said, glancing back at Dorian, who was now busy texting someone on his phone, completely dismissing my presence again. "You mean the proxy signature you needed on the board resolutions today."

Theo's eyes narrowed slightly, but he did not explain himself. "Take what is yours and go, Sabine. I will have the driver send the rest of your boxed items to your sister's place tomorrow."

"I already have what is mine," I told him, tapping the ledger under my arm.

I walked up the stairs, retrieved the small black rolling suitcase I had packed that morning before the board meeting, and wheeled it back down to the ground floor. The wheels bumped rhythmically against the carpeted steps, the only sound in the quiet house.

When I reached the foyer, Theo was waiting by the front door, his arms crossed over his chest, watching me with an expression of impatient relief. He was ready to close this chapter, ready to erase me from the premises before his next business call.

I stopped at the threshold, my hand resting on the metal handle of my suitcase. I turned to face him one last time.

"This house, Theo," I said, pointing two fingers toward the polished hardwood floor beneath our feet. "Do you remember whose money actually paid the down payment when—"

A pair of blinding LED headlights swept across the glass panels of the front door, cutting my sentence short.

The heavy rumble of a high-end engine idled in the driveway. Through the sheer entryway curtains, the sleek, matte-black silhouette of a Maybach came to a halt right at the curb.

The driver's door clicked open.

The halogen porch light spilled outward, cutting through the dusk to illuminate the woman stepping onto the brick walkway—Adaeze from Veller Capital. Her sharp gaze bypassed the manicured lawn and locked directly onto the glass door, the bright beams of her car reflecting off the worn leather cover of the ledger held tightly in my hand.
