Chapter 2

Unfortunately, the car suddenly broke down that morning, so we had no choice but to take the bus to work.

Rush hour on the bus was absolute chaos. The second we got on, Henry got swept away by the crowd.

Meanwhile, I ended up trapped near the window.

The moment I was pinned there, I could feel countless eyes on me from every direction. My whole body stiffened with discomfort, and every time the bus jolted, I could feel someone brushing against my thigh.

I tried leaning back to avoid being groped, but the bus was packed too tightly.

Just when I was reaching my limit, a tall figure suddenly stepped in front of me, shielding me from the crowd around us.

He was a broad-shouldered man with a sharp, rugged face. He lowered his head slightly to look at me, a faint smile tugging at his lips as his deep voice rumbled softly.

"You're beautiful."

A heavy, masculine scent surrounded me, making me freeze for a second.

"Thank you..."

I looked at his powerful build and the muscle packed into his bare forearms. My heartbeat instantly sped up so hard that it felt ready to burst out of my chest. Just looking at him made my whole body feel hot.

My body actually reacted to him.

The realization startled me so badly that I quickly turned around.

But the next second, I felt him press in behind me, and his hands started wandering.

His sudden boldness scared me. I wanted to struggle free, but instead, he became even more daring.

I was a conservative woman, so even though what he was doing crossed the line, I didn't dare make a scene.

For the first time in my life, the commute felt unbearably long.

After what felt like forever, the bus finally reached my company.

I walked off numbly.

Humiliation and shame flooded through me, but strangely enough, buried underneath it all was the faintest trace of satisfaction.

I shook my head hard, forcing myself not to think about it.

Everything I was doing was for Henry's treatment.

The moment I entered the office, all the male coworkers looked over.

I had always been considered attractive, especially because of my figure. More than a few coworkers secretly fantasized about me. But I usually dressed conservatively and kept proper boundaries, so nobody had ever gotten the chance to take advantage of me.

Seeing me show up to work dressed this revealingly left everyone stunned.

Even during work hours, several male coworkers deliberately dropped things on the floor, then bent down under their desks to pick them up, taking forever before straightening back up.

My face burned the entire time. I could only keep my legs tightly together and try my best not to expose myself.

That whole day felt like torture.

Finally, it was time to get off work.

When I got home, Henry had just returned from grocery shopping. He looked at me with concern.

"Honey, nobody on the bus messed with you this morning, right?"

"How could they not? Some creep took advantage of me!"

I told Henry everything that had happened on the bus, my voice full of grievance.

Henry kept comforting me. "Some friends are coming over tonight. They're business partners. Put this dress on for me, okay?"

As he spoke, he pulled out a revealing lace dress.

It was the same style I had worn the night before, sheer in all the wrong places, with ripped patterns woven through the fabric.

The fabric was practically transparent. You could see almost everything through it. Wearing something like that at home was one thing, but there were guests coming tonight. How was I supposed to wear that in front of other people?

"Honey, please. I really want to see you in this dress."

Henry kept pleading with me.

But by now, I understood something: every time I gave in to one of his requests, his desires only grew worse.

So, this time, I decided I wasn't going to indulge him anymore.

I spent forty hours hand-beading a gown for a woman who was currently sleeping with my husband. My fingers were raw, my vision blurred, and the needle had just driven deep into my index finger, leaving a drop of blood on the silk. Braxton walked into our penthouse, rain dripping from his suit, and didn't even look at me. But the scent hit me instantly—Bulgarian rose and white musk. It was the custom perfume Griselda, my own sister, commissioned in Paris. I had spent three years as a ghost in my own marriage, sewing costumes for the woman who had haunted my vows since day one. Braxton didn't bother to hide it anymore; there was a smudge of her coral lipstick on his collar. He didn't offer an explanation, only a command to finish the gown for the Met Gala so I wouldn't embarrass them. My mother called moments later, her voice sharp with the usual dismissal. She didn't care that I was bleeding or that my husband was cheating with my sister. She only cared that I was "falling behind" on Griselda's gown. I sat in the silence of that cold, marble cage, staring at the needle in my hand. For years, I had swallowed every insult and stitched every lie, believing I was the capable one who had to make them happy. But as the clock ticked, a door inside me finally clicked shut. I wasn't just tired; I was finished. I set the needle down, picked up my phone, and dialed my sister’s number to tell her she’d have to find someone else to bleed for her.

When his beautiful, wealthy heiress "girlfriend" visited the ward, he publicly mocked my background to make her smile. "Some people get in through the back door. They're not fit for the front lines." Even when I was forced to work as a secret banquet waitress to cover the medical copays he ignored, he found me, ruined the job out of pure possessive jealousy, and then fined my meager resident salary the very next morning just to show his absolute control. I endured his punishing kisses and cruel rebukes, sacrificing my dignity just to keep my mother alive. But I couldn't understand why he had to destroy every shred of my peace. If he wanted the perfect heiress, why did he refuse to let me go? Staring at his cold, controlling eyes in the stairwell, my exhaustion finally overpowered my fear.
