Chapter 3

"Ten minutes," I told Judge Ortiz, keeping my eyes fixed on the narrow glass window of the courtroom door. Rosie stood on the other side, her hands pressed flat against the glass. "With me in the room."

Judge Ortiz leaned forward, resting her forearms on the raised bench. "Are you certain, Ms. Bennett? I can order him to leave the premises and schedule a supervised visitation at a later date."

"I am certain," I said. "I need to know what he intends to say to her."

Liam exhaled.

"Ava, stop," Noah whispered, grabbing my elbow. "You are validating his stunt. We walk out that door, we go home, and we let the lawyers handle this."

I pulled my arm free. "He has shipping receipts with your signature, Noah. I am not walking anywhere with you until I understand what you did."

Noah shifted his weight, putting a foot of distance between us.

"These are my terms," I said, turning to face Liam, ignoring Noah's glare. "You do not touch her. You do not tell her I kept you away. You make zero promises about tomorrow, next week, or ever."

Liam did not argue.

"You call time," Liam said. "I follow your lead."

Judge Ortiz nodded to the bailiff. "Bring the child back in. Ms. Monroe, you will supervise and record."

The oak doors swung open. Rosie stepped inside, her light-up sneakers blinking red and green as she hurried down the center aisle. She bypassed the empty spectator chairs and went straight for Noah, grabbing the edge of his suit jacket.

Noah placed a protective hand on her shoulder, pulling her close against his leg.

I walked over and gently untangled her fingers from his wool sleeve. "Come here, sweetie. Sit with me."

I guided her to the chair next to mine. Across the table, Liam stood still.

"Hi, Rosie," Liam said. His voice stayed low and even. "I am Liam."

Rosie tilted her head. She studied the worn leather of his boots, the faded denim of his jeans, and the watch on his wrist.

"Are you the man from the door?" Rosie asked.

"What door?" Liam asked.

"The heavy ones," Rosie said, pointing toward the back of the room. "You yelled."

"I did," Liam admitted. "I am sorry if I scared you. That was not polite."

He did not call her sweetheart. He did not use the word daughter. That omission loosened the tight knot in my chest, a fraction.

Claire Monroe tapped the screen of her phone, setting a digital timer. Ten bold numbers flashed on the display.

10:00.

The countdown started. Claire uncapped her pen and began writing on a legal pad. The scratching sound filled the space between us.

Rosie swung her legs, her heels tapping against the chair rungs. She looked at the faded ink tattoos peeking out from Liam's cuffs, then slowly dragged her gaze up to his face.

"Why didn't you send me any birthday cards?" Rosie asked.

Liam glanced at me, checking the boundary line, then looked back to Rosie. "I did send them."

Noah's knuckles turned white as he gripped the back of my chair. "Careful, Liam."

"Where did they go?" Rosie asked, her brow furrowing.

"I put them in the mail," Liam answered, keeping his tone steady. He did not point a finger at his brother. He did not accuse Margaret. "Sometimes mail gets lost."

07:45.

The digital numbers ticked down. Claire Monroe wrote another line on her pad.

Liam reached toward the plastic evidence bag resting near my elbow. He slid out a photocopied page and laid it flat on the wood, turning it so Rosie could see.

"The first one I sent had a pressed daisy inside," Liam told her. "I found it growing near a chain-link fence outside my rehab clinic. I taped it to a piece of cardboard so it would not break in the envelope."

He pointed to a printed receipt on the paper. "It cost eighteen dollars and forty cents to send it. I made sure they put a tracking sticker on it. I checked the computer every day until it said delivered."

"Did you send a present?" Rosie asked.

"I didn't have any money for a present," Liam said. "Just the flower."

"An addict's weeds do not belong in a child's bedroom."

Margaret's voice cut through the room. She had moved from the second row to stand right behind Noah, her chin raised, her eyes cold. "We threw it in the incinerator where it belonged."

Noah stepped closer to the table, shielding his mother. "She is right. You expect us to hand a toddler a piece of trash you picked up off the street? You were severely unwell, Liam."

"It was a flower," Liam said, his eyes locking onto his brother. "And it was addressed to Ava. Not you."

My blood spiked. The sheer arrogance of their confession erased any lingering hesitation I had.

"You do not decide what goes into my daughter's room, Margaret," I said, my voice ringing off the high ceiling.

Margaret blinked, her pristine posture faltering. "Ava, I was only protecting—"

"You overstepped," I cut her off, standing up to face her directly. "If a letter comes for my child, I am the one who decides if she sees it. Not you. Never you."

Noah reached out, attempting to touch my arm. "Ava, lower your voice. People are staring."

I slapped his hand away. "Do not tell me to lower my voice. You hid mail addressed to my daughter."

Rosie stopped swinging her legs. I had never raised my voice at Margaret Ward. Not in four years. Not ever.

04:12.

Claire Monroe kept writing, her pen moving faster now.

Rosie looked down at her lap. She picked up the folded construction paper she had been clutching all morning. The blue crayon card. She placed it face down on the table, covering Liam's sobriety coin.

"Do you know my middle name?" Rosie asked, looking at Liam.

The courtroom went dead silent. Even Margaret stopped breathing. Claire Monroe paused her pen, waiting for the answer.

Liam stared at the little girl sitting across from him. He looked at me, hunting for a clue that did not exist in the court records.

He had missed the hospital. He had missed the birth certificate. He had missed everything.

"No," Liam said softly. "I don't."

"June," Noah answered from behind me. His voice carried a sharp edge of authority, reclaiming his territory. "Named after Ava's grandmother. She weighed seven pounds and four ounces. I was the one who bought her first car seat."

Liam absorbed the strike without flinching. He pulled a pen from his jacket pocket and reached for the evaluator's sign-in sheet resting near Claire's phone.

He scrawled his name on the top line.

I watched his hand move across the paper. When he reached the column labeled Relationship to Minor, his pen hovered. He pressed the tip against the paper and wrote biological father.

He left the word dad out.

The timer hit 00:00. An electronic chime echoed through the courtroom, ending the first ten minutes of a future none of us knew how to name.
