Chapter 4

"You do not have to choose anyone today," I told Rosie.

I slid her folded construction paper into a plastic folder. The blue letters spelling D-A-D were blacked out. She had taken a sharpie to the card during the car ride home, violently scribbling over the word until the paper nearly tore.

"Does the wedding still count?" Rosie asked, staring at the plastic sleeve resting on her lap.

The answer caught in my throat, refusing to surface. I reached over and smoothed down her collar.

"We are taking things one day at a time right now," I said softly.

"But my flower girl dress is already in the closet," she pointed out.

"I know," I said. "And it is a beautiful dress."

Noah pulled the SUV into our driveway and shifted into park. He did not unbuckle his seatbelt. The engine idled, a hum vibrating through the floorboards.

"Go inside and start your math sheets, sweetie," I said, pushing my door open. "I will be right there."

Rosie hopped out, dragging her backpack across the leather seat. She marched up the brick walkway, her sneakers scuffing the concrete.

Noah had rolled his window down.

"Where is the shoebox?" I asked.

Noah stared straight ahead at the closed garage door. "Ava, we need to talk to a lawyer before we do anything else."

"I am not asking a lawyer," I said, stepping closer to his door. "I am asking the man I was supposed to marry. Where is the box?"

Noah squeezed the steering wheel. "Get back in the car, Ava."

I climbed into the passenger seat. Twenty minutes later, we entered his dark Sixth Avenue office. Noah went straight to his desk, opened the bottom drawer, and lifted out a cardboard box.

A kindergarten Father's Day card was taped to the lid. The construction paper was faded around the edges, but the handwriting across the center remained legible.

Noah Ward.

I pulled the lid off. Stacks of envelopes filled the space, bound together by rubber bands. I reached in and pulled the top bundle out. I snapped the rubber band, letting the envelopes spill across the desk.

I counted them one by one, sliding each envelope across the glass.

"Twenty-three," I said, dropping the last one. "Liam told the judge he sent thirty-eight."

Noah loosened his silk tie, pulling the knot down an inch. "I never saw the other fifteen. My mother must have intercepted those from the estate before they ever reached my office."

"You let her handle his mail."

"She handled the estate," Noah corrected, his voice hardening. "She sorted the deliveries."

"And you sorted mine." I picked up an envelope. The return address read Cedar House Rehab. "You intercepted mail addressed to me."

"Four years ago, Rosie came home from kindergarten in tears," Noah argued, stepping closer to the desk. "She asked me why every other kid had a dad waiting at the pickup gate. She asked what was wrong with her. Do you remember that day?"

"I remember holding her until she fell asleep," I said.

He pointed at the box.

"I locked that away to give her a father who actually showed up," Noah said. "Liam was a ghost. An addict who could not stay clean. I made a choice to protect our family from a man who would only break her heart."

"You made a choice to control my life," I shot back. "You decided what I could handle. You decided what my daughter deserved."

"I stepped up!" Noah yelled, slamming his hand against the glass desk. The envelopes jumped. "I bought the diapers. I paid for the preschool. I stayed awake when she had a fever. Liam sent a pressed weed in the mail."

"Liam tried to reach us," I said, my voice dropping to a whisper. "And you built a life with me on a foundation of stolen letters."

I grabbed another envelope. This one had a postmark from three years ago.

"Did you ever even open one?" I asked, waving the sealed paper at him. "Did you ever check to see if he was sober?"

"I did not need to open them to know what they said," Noah replied coldly. "Excuses. Apologies. Promises he would inevitably break."

The scent of his cologne hung in the air, suffocating.

"Do you love me?" I asked.

"Of course I love you," Noah answered instantly, reaching for my arms.

I stepped back, avoiding his touch. "Do you love me, or do you love the version of me that did not have Liam in the picture?"

Noah clamped his mouth shut. A muscle feathered along his jawline.

He loved the clean slate. He loved the Ava who needed saving.

My phone vibrated against the glass desk.

Eleanor's Bridal.

The phone buzzed a second time. Then a third.

Noah reached across the desk, his fingers aiming for the reject button. "Do not answer that."

I snatched the device right out from under his hand and swiped the icon.

"This is Ava," I said.

"Hi Ava, calling to confirm your final fitting tomorrow at noon," the cheerful voice chirped through the speaker. "We have the veil ready."

"Cancel it," I said, holding Noah's stare. "The wedding is postponed."

"Oh," the receptionist paused. "I am sorry to hear that. Should I keep your deposit on file for a future date?"

"No," I said. "Cancel the appointment."

Noah dropped his hand to his side, his posture stiffening. "Pausing the wedding is a mistake. It will make Rosie feel insecure. She needs stability right now."

"What makes her insecure is every adult in her life deciding what she is allowed to know," I countered. "She sat in a courtroom today and realized her entire history is a lie."

I grabbed the box and swept the scattered envelopes back inside. I shoved the lid on and tucked the cardboard under my arm.

"You are sleeping here tonight," I told him. "Or at a hotel."

Noah finally looked up, his eyes widening. "Ava, be reasonable. We need to present a united front for the evaluator tomorrow."

"There is no united front," I said. "Do not come back to the apartment until you write down every lie you told. I want a complete timeline. Dates, conversations, everything you hid."

He searched my face for hesitation and found none. He did not fight me. He pulled out his apartment key and dropped it onto the glass desk.

The metal clinked loudly in the room.

"I will have the timeline by morning," Noah said, his voice flat.

The drive home passed in a blur of streetlights and shifting gears. I kept glancing at the shoebox resting on the passenger seat, a weight anchoring me to the reality of the past four years.

I set my keys on the console table and dropped the shoebox next to them.

I threw the deadbolt and engaged the chain lock. The slides echoed in the hallway.

"Mom?"

I spun around.

Rosie sat halfway up the stairs, peering through the banister slats and clutching a silver picture frame.

"Is the boy in this picture the one everyone lied about?" she asked.
