Chapter 2

I gripped the yellow slip. My thumb pressed over Noah's faded signature, tracing the loops of ink that proved he had received the envelope.

"Ava," Noah said, his voice dropping to a low, urgent hum. "It is just a shipping receipt. An old file from my mother's estate."

Liam stepped closer to the wooden railing, his boots loud against the hardwood floor. "Read the date, Noah. Four years ago."

I stared at the numbers printed in black ink. Liam was right.

"And the delivery address isn't the estate," Liam added, his tone flat. "It is your law firm on Sixth Avenue. Suite four-hundred."

"Enough," Judge Ortiz snapped. Her gavel struck the sounding block with a sharp crack that echoed off the high ceiling. "Everyone sit down. Bailiff, remove the minor child from the courtroom immediately."

A female court officer approached the spectator bench. She knelt beside Rosie and offered her hand. Rosie slid off the wooden seat, her light-up sneakers flashing red and green against the polished tile floor.

"Mom?" Rosie asked, her voice trembling.

"Go with the nice lady, sweetie," I said, forcing my tone to stay steady. "I will be right out."

As she walked toward the oak doors, Rosie looked back at me. The corner of the blue crayon card was soaked in sweat, the edges peeling apart from the heat of her anxious grip.

The doors clicked shut behind her.

"Four years ago," Liam said, turning his attention back to Noah. "You found a shoebox hidden in Margaret's linen closet."

Noah's jaw locked. The color drained from his face, leaving his skin a pale, sickly gray. He adjusted his silk tie, but his fingers shook.

"Twenty-three returned letters were inside," Liam continued, leaning over the railing. "The lid of that box had a kindergarten Father's Day card taped right over the cardboard brand name. A card with a blue dinosaur sticker."

I dropped the yellow receipt onto the table. "Noah?"

Noah refused to look at me. He watched the judge's bench, his posture rigid. "He had just finished his second stint in rehab, Ava. He was volatile. Unpredictable."

"Is it true?" I asked, my voice rising. "Did you find a box of his letters?"

Noah finally turned his head. "I could not bring a recovering addict into Rosie's life. I was protecting our family."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

He did not say he wanted to spare my feelings. He did not say it was my choice to make.

"I was scared," Noah whispered, his eyes pleading with me.

"I kept those letters away!" Margaret shouted from the second row. She gripped the back of my chair, her knuckles turning white against the wood. "I protected a three-year-old child from a man who could not even stay sober for a weekend. We decided it was the only safe option."

The word we hung in the air, heavy and suffocating.

Margaret's eyes darted to Noah, just for an instant, before snapping back to the judge. The silent exchange told me everything. They had planned this together. They had intercepted the mail, hidden the evidence, and built a pristine narrative over the ashes of Liam's attempts to reach us.

"You had no right," Liam said, his voice rough. "You returned them all marked as undeliverable. You made me think Ava had moved away."

"You are a disruption, Liam," Margaret hissed. "You do not belong here."

Liam ignored his mother. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a single sheet of folded paper. He handed it to the bailiff, who inspected it before passing it up to Judge Ortiz.

"Intake records from St. Brigid Recovery," Liam said. "Dated nine years ago. The exact night I disappeared."

Judge Ortiz scanned the document.

"Look at the personal inventory list at the bottom of the page," Liam said, pointing toward the bench. "One cracked silver watch. Four hundred and ten dollars in cash."

My stomach twisted into a tight knot. Those were the exact items he had on him the night I told him I was pregnant. I had spent nearly a decade picturing him buying a bus ticket with that cash, running off to start a new life without me.

He had gone to rehab instead.

I pushed my chair back and stood up. The wooden legs scraped loudly against the floor.

"You still left me pregnant," I said, staring at him.

Liam met my gaze. He did not flinch. He did not offer excuses.

"I did," Liam said, his voice softening. "Leaving you was not honorable. I was a mess, and I failed you. I failed our child. But being locked out of my daughter's life by my own brother is not how the truth should end."

"This is a manipulation tactic," Noah argued, standing up beside me. "He brings in old records to play the victim. It does not change the fact that he abandoned you."

"I have the shipping receipts, Noah," Liam shot back. "I have the tracking numbers. I tried to come back."

Judge Ortiz adjusted her glasses and stared down at the paperwork. She tapped her pen against the microphone base, silencing the room.

"This court does not proceed with adoptions under contested circumstances," Judge Ortiz announced. "The petition is paused for thirty days."

Noah slammed his hand onto the table. "Your Honor, this man has no legal standing to interrupt the pending petition. He has not paid a dime in child support."

"I am assigning Claire Monroe to conduct a full family evaluation," Judge Ortiz interrupted, her voice rising over Noah's protest. "Mr. Ward, you have forty-eight hours to submit your complete medical records and proof of residency to this court."

"Understood, Your Honor," Liam said.

"Ms. Bennett, you will cooperate fully with the evaluator," Judge Ortiz added. "Court is adjourned."

The gavel slammed down.

Noah grabbed my elbow. "Let's go get Rosie. We need to leave right now."

I pulled my arm away, stepping out of his reach. "Do not touch me."

"Ava, please," Noah pleaded. "Let me explain the letters."

"Save it for the evaluator," I said.

The bailiff stepped between us, holding a thick, clear plastic evidence bag. He extended it toward me, blocking Noah from getting any closer.

"Ma'am, the clerk needs you to verify the exhibits submitted by the biological father," the bailiff said. "Just a formality."

I took the bag. A black marker label across the front read 38 letters.

Through the transparent plastic, I saw the top envelope. The postage stamp was canceled. The handwriting was Liam's messy scrawl, the same handwriting from his old college notebooks.

The recipient line read: Ava and my daughter.

"Ms. Bennett," Judge Ortiz called out from the bench, pausing before she exited through her private chambers.

I looked up from the bag.

"Will you permit Mr. Ward a ten-minute supervised introduction with the minor child before you leave the courthouse today?" she asked.

Liam stood still. He did not ask. He just waited.

I turned toward the back of the room. Through the narrow glass panel in the courtroom door, I saw Rosie.

My lips parted.
