The Husband She Erased

My mom grasped at the air and frantically searched for Sarah's hand.

"No, there's no way. Alex isn't that kind of person. Something must've happened to him," my mom cried.

"Call the police. Hurry up and call the police, Sarah," my mom begged desperately.

I stared at my mother with tears running down my face. This was all my fault. If I hadn't married Sarah, my mom would still have a son.

Sarah scoffed and replied, "Why do I need to call the cops if he's just fooling around with other women? You can go ahead and tell that son of yours that I'll be handing him our divorce papers soon!"

My mom was generally an even-tempered person, but this time she was genuinely outraged.

She leaned against her cane and shakily got to her feet. Then, she exclaimed, "Alright then. Since you won't lodge a police report, I'll do it myself!"

She continued, "I've never seen such a heartless wife in my entire life. You don't even care if your husband is dead or alive! You're no daughter-in-law of mine!"

Since it was already office hours, a good number of people had already crowded around them to watch the commotion.

Flushing from embarrassment, Sarah retorted, "Go right ahead! Do you think I wanted to marry Alex? Let's see how embarrassed you'll feel when he ends up in jail for messing around with prostitutes!"

Subsequently, Sarah forced her way through the crowd and left.

My mom wiped away her tears before asking the people around her for directions to the police station. Afterward, she gradually walked away while she used her cane to guide her.

I tried to follow my mom, but my efforts were to no avail. Since I was bound to Sarah, I had no choice but to watch her walk away.

I felt incredibly angry. I resented myself for marrying Sarah when I knew that she didn't love me. Because of my actions, my elderly mother was worried sick about me, and she even had to put up with Sarah's insults.

My mom was completely blind. I couldn't imagine how she'd managed to locate Sarah's law firm with nothing but a cane to guide her. She must've traveled a long way and struggled throughout her journey to the building.

Now, she was heading to the police station to locate my whereabouts. Unfortunately, she was bound to end up disappointed. Instead of getting her son back, all she'd be able to find was my tattered body.

Feeling guilty and resentful, I followed Sarah around and watched as she furiously called me over and over. Not to my surprise, none of her calls were answered.

Fuming, she swept all of her work files off the table and barked, "I can't believe this, Alex Campbell. First, you cheat on me. And now, you're ignoring my calls? Just you wait—you and I are getting a divorce!"

Subsequently, she navigated to our chat and began to text me.

"I know you were fooling around with other women last night!" one of her texts read.

"How dare you cheat on me when I haven't even talked about getting a divorce?" said another.

"Are you too scared to pick up my calls after what you've done? You coward!"

"Let's get a divorce!"

I watched as she lashed out at me through her text messages. If this had happened in the past, I would've already been trying to console her. Unfortunately, I had already died.

All of a sudden, Sarah's phone started to ring.

Initially, she thought that I'd finally decided to call her. Since she was still feeling enraged, she decided not to pick up. However, once she noticed that the caller ID was an unknown number, she skeptically reached for her phone and answered the call.

"Hello, is this Alex Campbell's wife? I'm calling to inform you that Mr. Campbell passed away in a car accident last night. His mother is currently at the police station, but she's quite upset by the news. Could you please come down to the station at your earliest convenience?"
