Chapter 6

The morning light filled the tall windows of Kane Enterprises.

The city was calm, but Leo's mind was not.

He sat behind his desk, staring at his computer screen without really seeing it.

Something about Ava Montgomery did not add up.

She worked perfectly, spoke politely, and always stayed calm.

Too calm.

Her eyes said more than her words.

They held secrets he could not read.

He opened a file on his computer and typed her name.

Ava Montgomery.

The system filled with hundreds of records.

Photos from parties, interviews, and charity events.

All perfect.

All too clean.

He frowned slightly. "Nobody is that perfect," he whispered.

A soft knock came on his door.

He closed the screen quickly.

"Come in," he said.

Ava stepped inside.

Her smile was gentle, her voice steady. "Good morning."

Leo stood. "You are early again."

"I like to start before everyone else," she said.

"Maybe you just like to surprise me," he said softly.

She smiled. "Maybe I do."

He watched her for a second longer, then gestured toward her desk. "We have a busy day ahead."

Ava nodded and began to work.

She focused on the papers in front of her, but her mind was somewhere else.

The image of her father and Leo talking in the Sky Lounge still haunted her.

She could not forget her father's voice or Leo's anger.

An hour later, Leo spoke without looking up.

"Do you believe in truth, Ava?"

She paused. "Truth?"

"Yes," he said quietly. "Do you think people can ever be completely honest?"

Ava looked down at her papers. "No. Everyone hides something."

He looked at her now. "And what about you?"

She met his gaze. "I hide less than most."

He smiled faintly. "That is not the same as being honest."

"No," she said softly. "It is not."

Their eyes held for a moment before she looked away.

When Leo left for a meeting, Ava opened her hidden folder again.

She needed more evidence against her father.

She scanned through documents, saving everything that linked him to corruption.

The more she found, the more she hated what she saw.

Her father had destroyed not only Leo's family but also several others.

He had hidden everything behind fake contracts and false donations.

Her heart felt heavy.

She whispered, "He deserves to lose everything."

Nina's voice came through her earpiece.

"You sound tired."

"I am," Ava said softly. "The more I read, the worse it gets."

"Then stop for today," Nina said.

"I cannot," Ava replied. "I am too close now."

That afternoon, Leo returned.

He carried two cups of coffee and placed one beside her.

"You looked tired this morning," he said. "I thought you could use this."

Ava looked up, surprised. "Thank you."

"It is just coffee," he said. "Do not look so shocked."

She smiled a little. "I am not used to kindness at work."

"Then I must be your first good boss," he said.

"Maybe," she said softly.

He sat across from her. "Tell me something. Why did you really want this job?"

She hesitated. "I wanted to prove I can do more than people think."

He nodded slowly. "That is a good reason. But I think there is more."

"Maybe," she said quietly.

"Maybe one day you will tell me," he said.

"Maybe," she repeated.

After lunch, Leo went to meet with a private investigator.

They met in a quiet café far from the office.

The man sat across from him, a small notebook in his hand.

"You wanted information on Ava Montgomery?" the man asked.

"Yes," Leo said. "Discreetly."

The man nodded. "I will dig into her background. School, travels, and connections."

"Good," Leo said. "Do not contact her family. I want this silent."

The man smiled. "Understood."

As the investigator left, Leo stayed for a moment, thinking.

He did not want to hurt Ava, but he needed answers.

He needed to know who she really was before he fell any deeper.

Back at the office, Ava finished another file.

Her phone buzzed with a message from Nina.

Nina: I found something big.

Ava: What is it?

Nina: Your father transferred company money to a secret account. It connects to an offshore bank.

Ava: Can you trace it?

Nina: Yes, but I need more access. The safest way is through Kane Enterprises.

Ava's fingers froze over her keyboard.

Through Kane Enterprises.

That meant she would have to use Leo's private system again.

She took a deep breath.

"I cannot stop now," she whispered.

When Leo returned, she was still working.

He watched her quietly for a few moments before speaking.

"You work harder than anyone here," he said.

"I like to finish what I start," she replied.

He walked closer. "Even when it gets dangerous?"

Ava looked up. "Why do you say that?"

"Because danger follows ambition," he said softly. "And you have both."

She smiled faintly. "So do you."

"Maybe that is why we understand each other," he said.

"Maybe," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

The silence that followed was not awkward.

It was full of unspoken tension, something neither of them wanted to break.

Later that evening, Ava left the building.

The city sky was gray, heavy with clouds.

She pulled her coat around her shoulders and started walking toward her car.

Halfway there, she noticed someone following her.

She stopped and looked over her shoulder.

A man in a dark coat stood a few meters away, pretending to check his phone.

"Nina," Ava whispered, "I think someone is watching me."

"Get to your car," Nina said quickly. "Now."

Ava walked faster, her heart pounding.

The man followed.

When she reached her car, she opened the door quickly and locked it.

The man disappeared into the crowd.

Nina's voice came again. "Are you safe?"

"Yes," Ava said, breathing hard. "But that was not normal. I think my father sent someone."

"Or maybe Leo did," Nina said quietly.

Ava froze. "Why would he?"

"Because he is starting to doubt you," Nina said. "Be careful."

Ava gripped the steering wheel tightly.

"If Leo finds out who I am, everything ends."

That night, Leo sat at his desk at home.

The rain was falling again.

He stared at a photo of his father on the wall.

He had promised himself that no one would ever deceive him again.

But Ava's face kept appearing in his mind.

Her eyes, her calm voice, her secrets.

He felt drawn to her even as his instincts warned him to stay away.

He whispered softly, "I need to know the truth."

Across the city, Ava sat in her apartment, staring at her computer screen.

She opened her secret folder again.

The offshore account was still there, with her father's name and signature.

She copied the data onto a drive and closed the laptop.

She stood and walked to the window.

The city lights glowed against the night sky.

Her reflection stared back at her.

For a moment, she saw both sides of herself - the heiress and The Night Fox.

She whispered, "I am getting closer."

Her phone buzzed. It was Nina again.

Nina: Be careful tomorrow. Leo might test you.

Ava: I can handle it.

Nina: You like him, don't you?

Ava paused before typing. Ava: It does not matter. I cannot afford feelings.

As she turned off the lights, Ava's heart felt heavy.

She knew she was falling deeper into something she could not control.

She could not stop now.

The truth was too close, and the danger was too real.

Outside, thunder rolled over the city.

Inside, both Ava and Leo lay awake, thinking of each other and wondering the same thing.

Who will find the truth first?
