Chapter 2

My boot hit the frost-covered threshold of the council hall. I didn't turn around. The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind me, severing the warmth of the fire pit and the cheers for my replacement.

The freezing night air bit my cheeks. I kept walking.

Let them have Sable.

I navigated the dirt paths winding through the sleeping pack grounds. The infirmary sat at the edge of the territory, a drafty wooden cabin smelling of dried thyme and old blood. I pushed the door open, the rusty hinges groaning in the quiet night.

Inside, I ignored the wardrobe. I didn't need clothes. I needed my tools.

I hauled my leather medicine box onto the wooden table. Glass clinked as I slotted wax-sealed bottles of willow bark extract into the leather loops. Next went the bundles of dried yarrow, then the crushed bloodroot.

I knelt by the hearth, prying up the loose floorboard. My fingers brushed the cracked leather spine of the Hartley medical journal. The pages were yellowed, holding twenty generations of my family's healing rites. I wiped a layer of dust from the cover and tucked it safely at the bottom of the box.

"You're actually leaving."

I spun around, dropping my hand to my hip.

Bryn stood in the doorway. The old military medic leaned heavily on his wooden cane, his gray hair plastered to his forehead by the wind.

"Cregan gave the order," I said, fastening the thick brass buckle on my box. "Sable is Luna now."

Bryn limped into the room, his boots thudding against the floorboards. "He told you to move to the lower quarters. Not leave the territory."

"I don't stay where I'm not needed." I hoisted the heavy strap over my shoulder.

Bryn blocked the doorway. His faded blue eyes locked onto mine, searching my face. "Not needed? Wren, look at me."

I met his gaze, keeping my expression perfectly blank.

"Twenty years," Bryn rasped, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Twenty years of border skirmishes. Men coming back with chests ripped open, arteries severed. Wounds that should have killed them in minutes."

"I treated them," I said flatly. "I did my job."

"You did more than that." Bryn took a step closer, tapping his cane for emphasis. "Remember Kaelen? A spear through the lung. He was hunting three days later. Remember Torin? Half his leg crushed by a falling pine. He walks without a limp."

"I run a clean infirmary, Bryn. You know my methods."

"Those old, fatal injuries never worsened," Bryn continued, ignoring my excuse. "They never got infected. The blood-rot plague bypassed our borders three separate times while neighboring packs burned their dead in piles."

He pointed a gnarled finger toward the birthing cabins across the yard.

"And the birthing rooms. Not a single mother has died in childbirth since you arrived. Not one. In two decades."

I adjusted the strap on my shoulder. "Good hygiene saves lives."

"Are these really coincidences, my lady?" he demanded, the formal title slipping out naturally. He struck his cane against the floorboards. "You expect me to believe it's just boiling herbs?"

I reached into my pocket. My fingers found a small, coarse burlap pouch. I pulled it out and shoved it hard against his chest.

He fumbled to catch it.

"Feverfew," I told him, my tone uncompromising. "For the pups. Keep them hydrated if the swamp fever returns. Don't let Sable convince you to use ice baths too early."

Bryn stared at the pouch in his hands, his jaw tight. "Wren, please."

"Step aside, Bryn."

He didn't move. He stood his ground, a fragile old man trying to hold onto a safety net he didn't fully understand.

"Move," I commanded.

Slowly, he lowered his cane and shifted out of my path.

I walked past him, stepping out into the biting wind. The boundary stone loomed fifty yards ahead, a massive slab of jagged granite marking the edge of Blackpine territory.

I stopped an inch from the stone.

Invisible to the pack, a tether pulsed in the air right in front of me. My wolf didn't have fur or fangs. She didn't manifest physically. She was a conduit, a living lifeline woven into the blood of every Blackpine wolf. For two decades, I had anchored their vitality to my own soul, draining my own energy to keep their bodies whole.

It was a secret I had swallowed for twenty years. A healer wolf's bond required absolute proximity.

If I leave, it breaks.

I raised my hand, fingertips brushing the unseen barrier. A faint hum vibrated through my skin, warm and familiar.

I pictured Rourke pinning the brass badge onto Sable's armor. I pictured Cregan's empty eyes as he told me I was nothing but bandages.

My jaw clenched.

I lifted my boot and stepped over the boundary stone.

The snap was silent, but it echoed in my bones. A violent jolt tore through my chest, forcing a sharp exhale from my lungs. The invisible tether shattered into a million pieces.

Instantly, a crushing weight lifted off my shoulders. I felt lighter. Faster.

One second passed.

Then, the night ripped open.

A howl pierced the silence. It wasn't a battle cry. It was pure, unadulterated agony.

Then came another. And another.

Dozens of screams erupted from the barracks, echoing across the valley. The noise swelled into a horrifying chorus of pain. Every warrior whose life I had artificially extended, every fatal old wound I had kept sealed with my own life force, was tearing open simultaneously.

My boots crunched on the frozen dirt. I paused for half a heartbeat.

The shrieks from the council hall grew louder. Someone was screaming Cregan's name in blind panic. The chaos was absolute.

I didn't turn back.

My white breath dispersed into the freezing night. I adjusted the strap of my medicine box and kept walking, leaving the Blackpine pack to face the reality of their choices.

The dark tree line swallowed me. I marched down the muddy trail, putting distance between myself and the screaming pack. The screams eventually faded, replaced by the howling wind of the Northern woods.

I walked for an hour. The temperature dropped further, freezing the mud beneath my boots.

Hoofbeats thundered in the distance.

I stopped, sliding my hand toward the hunting knife at my belt.

The rhythmic pounding grew louder, approaching fast from the thicket ahead. A massive black stallion burst through the trees, kicking up clumps of snow and dirt. The beast's eyes were wild, lather coating its neck.

The rider yanked the reins hard. The horse reared, letting out a sharp whinny that cut through the wind.

Before the beast's hooves even hit the ground, the man vaulted from the saddle. He landed heavily, his dark cloak swirling around his tall frame. He didn't draw a weapon. Instead, he dropped to one knee in the mud, bowing his head.

"Who are you?" I demanded, drawing my blade. "State your business."

The man slowly raised his head. The moonlight caught his face, revealing a jagged scar across his cheek and wide, frantic eyes. He wore the dark leather armor of the Northern territories, a crest I didn't recognize stamped on his shoulder.

He stared at me, his gaze dropping to the leather box at my side, then back up to my features.

He gasped, a sharp intake of air that cracked the silence.

"A Hartley," he whispered, his voice trembling as he stared up at me. "Are you truly the last of the Hartley bloodline?"
