The Healer They Deposed Holds Blackpine's Last Breath Chapter 1

At the war council my husband ripped the Luna brooch from my chest and pinned it on the woman who broke his bed twenty years ago.

My son clapped first.

Fifteen years old, and he unfastened the pin with his own hands, the same pin Cregan gave me the year that boy was born.

"A warrior belongs beside an Alpha," he told the hall. "All you do is boil herbs and wrap bandages."

The hall agreed.

For twenty years that is all any of them saw—a wolfless defect who slept her way into the Alpha's furs with a few healing tricks.

None of them ever asked why Blackpine's wounded never died.

Why plague turned at our borders.

Why no mother was ever lost in the birthing bed.

None of them knew a healer's wolf does not run on four legs.

A healer's wolf is the lifeline strung through every heartbeat in the pack.

I packed my apothecary in silence and stepped past the boundary stone.

The second I crossed, the howling started behind me—every old wound in Blackpine tearing open in the same breath.

Three days later the Silverclaw came.

By the seventh day their warrior Luna's blade had stopped no one's bleeding.

On the fifteenth day I looked through my door and saw the Alpha kneeling in the snow.

My son knelt beside him, calling for his mother.

I looked down at my hands, twenty years of boiling herbs, and they had never once felt this warm.

Cregan's knuckles brushed my collarbone.

The heat of the council fire cast long shadows across his face, but his eyes held no warmth. His rough fingers traced the edge of the tarnished brass Luna pin resting against my chest.

Fifteen years ago, he fastened this exact pin on me the night our son, Rourke, was born.

I didn't step back. I just nudged my leather medicine box a half-inch closer to my boots.

Across the roaring fire pit stood Sable Dorne. Silver armor caught the leaping flames, casting cold light against the timbered walls. Twenty years ago, she left our pack for a political alliance with the Silverclaws. Now, she stood here, demanding the title of Luna under the guise of wartime necessity.

"Wren is stepping down," Cregan announced to the crowded hall.

His voice carried the same flat authority he used when assigning border patrols. No hesitation. No regret.

"The pack requires a warrior Luna to face the coming winter raids. Sable will take her place."

Silence stretched through the room, heavy and suffocating.

I stared down at my own hands. My palms were calloused, stained faint yellow from yarrow and bitterroot. Three years ago, a rival spear tore through Cregan's left ribs. The healers gave him hours. It was these hands that packed his chest cavity with my ancestral poultices, these hands that pressed against his freezing skin for two days, using my own body heat to seal his fading life inside him.

I tasted copper at the back of my throat and swallowed it down. I kept my mouth shut.

"Is that your final word, Alpha?" I asked, keeping my tone entirely level.

"It is," Cregan replied. He finally dropped his hand from my chest, stepping back to align himself closer to Sable. "Pack survival comes before sentiment, Wren. You know this."

"Sentiment." I repeated the word, letting it hang in the smoky air.

Sable offered a tight, practiced nod. "I respect your service, Wren. But the battlefield requires a sword, not a mortar and pestle. The Blackpine pack cannot afford a weak link at the top."

"A weak link," I said, my gaze shifting from her polished armor to Cregan's avoiding eyes. "Is that what I am now?"

"You are a healer," Cregan said sharply. "And you will remain our head healer. But the Luna must lead the vanguard. Our enemies are massing at the borders. Sable brings fifty Silverclaw warriors and twenty years of combat experience."

"And what do I bring?" I asked him directly.

Cregan stiffened. "You bring bandages. We need blades."

Footsteps broke from the front row of the gathered elders.

Rourke.

My fifteen-year-old son walked into the space between us. He didn't look at me. He looked at his father, then at Sable.

Then, he started clapping.

The sound slapped against the stone walls, sharp and isolated, until Elder Thorne joined in. Soon, the entire hall echoed with applause for my replacement. The people I had bled for, the people I had kept alive through endless winters, were cheering for the woman who abandoned them two decades ago.

Rourke stopped clapping and turned to face me. He stood a full head taller than me now, his shoulders broad, his jaw set in the same stubborn line as Cregan's.

"Rourke," I murmured.

He stepped into my space and reached out. His fingers closed around the brass pin on my chest.

My chest tightened. I didn't move as he fumbled with the clasp. The sharp needle snagged my woolen tunic, pulling the fabric taut before breaking free.

"An Alpha needs a warrior by his side," Rourke said, his voice loud enough to carry to the back rows.

He held the pin up, the brass catching the firelight.

"All you do is boil herbs and wrap bandages."

The words hit harder than any physical blow. I looked into his eyes, searching for the little boy who used to hide behind my skirts, but found only the cold arrogance of his father.

"I kept this pack alive," I said softly, meant only for him.

"You kept them comfortable," Rourke corrected, sneering. "Sable will keep them strong. We don't need a nursemaid sitting in the high seat while the rest of us fight."

He turned his back to me, walked straight to Sable, and pressed the pin against her silver breastplate. He struggled to fasten it over the thick metal, but Sable placed her hand over his, helping him secure it.

"Welcome home, Luna," Rourke declared.

Murmurs of agreement rippled through the crowd.

"The boy speaks the truth," Elder Thorne muttered, leaning on his walking stick. "We need strength now."

"A healer belongs in the infirmary, not the high seat," another voice chimed in from the back.

"She should have stepped down years ago," someone else whispered loudly. "Sable is a true Northern wolf."

I looked at Rourke's back. My mind flashed to a suffocatingly hot night eight years ago. Seven-year-old Rourke convulsing on a sweat-soaked cot, his skin burning with swamp fever. I stayed awake for nine nights, packing his small body in ice and forcing bitterroot tea down his throat until the fever broke.

My throat closed up. I forced air into my lungs.

Cregan stepped forward, raising a hand to quiet the hall. "Wren will move her belongings to the lower quarters by nightfall. The transition will be swift and orderly. We have war preparations to finalize."

"You speak of this like a shift change at the watchtower," I said.

"It is a necessary adjustment," Cregan replied, his tone hardening. "Do not make this difficult, Wren. Accept your new station with grace."

"Grace." I let out a short, dry laugh.

Sable took a step forward, the brass pin gleaming against her chest. "If you require assistance moving your cauldrons and dried weeds, I can spare two of my guards to help you."

"Keep your guards," I told her.

I knelt and reached for my medicine box. My fingers found the heavy brass buckle.

Snap.

The sound cut through the murmurs, sharp as a breaking bone.

I stood up, gripping the leather handle. The weight of the box anchored me to the floor. I met Cregan's gaze, then Sable's, and finally rested my eyes on the back of my son's head. He refused to turn around.

"Then let the North see," I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the thick air, "how many months the blackpine can last without the one who boils the herbs."

A massive log snapped in the fire pit, sending a shower of orange sparks spiraling toward the rafters, and my boot was already stepping toward the heavy oak doors.
