Chapter 2

The door to her old room creaked open, revealing a space frozen in time, coated in a fine layer of dust. The air was stale, thick with the ghosts of a childhood she'd fought to forget. Ivy stood in the middle of the room, the silence a welcome reprieve from the storm downstairs.

The reprieve didn't last.

"Ivy." Sylvia's voice was strained, attempting a placating tone that set Ivy's teeth on edge. She stood in the doorway, her hands clasped nervously. "We can talk about this. Reasonably."

Ivy turned slowly. In her hand, appearing as if from nowhere, was a slim, black tactical knife. In two silent steps, she closed the distance between them. The tip of the blade pressed against the soft skin of Sylvia's throat.

Sylvia's breath hitched. Her carefully constructed composure shattered, revealing raw, primal fear.

"You and Alice," Ivy's voice was barely a whisper, yet it filled the room. "The day she died. You spoke to her. What did you say?"

Sylvia's eyes darted wildly. "I... I don't know what you're talking about."

The pressure of the knife increased infinitesimally. A tiny bead of blood welled up. "Try again."

Terror finally broke through Sylvia's lies. Words tumbled out in a panicked rush. "I just told her! I told her if she didn't marry Jeffrey, that charitable foundation her mother left behind... Harrison would have it dissolved! That's all! She ran off... maybe she didn't jump! Maybe she's just hiding!"

Hiding.

The word struck Ivy like a physical blow. The possibility, however slim, that Alice was alive... it changed everything.

She retracted the knife. Sylvia sagged against the doorframe, gasping for air, a hand pressed to her throat. Ivy walked past her without a second glance, her mind racing, a new plan forming with cold, swift precision.

She found Harrison in his study, pouring a stiff drink. He looked up as she entered, his face a mask of fury.

"Have you come to your senses?" he demanded.

"I'll marry him," Ivy said, her voice flat.

A wave of relief washed over Harrison's face, quickly replaced by suspicion. "Just like that?"

"Not just like that." Ivy stood before his massive oak desk, an immovable object. "I want the ten percent of Barr Group shares that were in Alice's name. And I want three percent of the assets Davenport Industries transfers to this family as part of the merger deal."

Harrison choked on his drink. "That's outrageous!"

"Is it?" Ivy's tone was dangerously calm. "It's the price for saving your company. And for my compliance."

He stared at her, seeing not the disposable daughter but a formidable adversary. The fight in his eyes slowly died, replaced by the cold calculation of a businessman. He needed this deal. He needed her.

"Fine," he bit out. "I'll have the lawyers draw it up."

"No," Ivy said. "You'll have your lawyer come here. Now. We do this tonight."

An hour later, the family lawyer stood nervously in the study as contracts were signed. Harrison and Sylvia watched, their faces tight with resentment. As Ivy scrawled her name on the final page, a memory flashed through her mind, sharp and unwanted: she was six years old, locked in a dark closet by Sylvia and Melanie. Alice was outside, her small fists beating against the door, crying Ivy's name.

Ivy pushed the memory down, encasing it in ice. She took her copy of the agreement, the paper a tangible victory. It wasn't just about the money. It was about taking back what belonged to her mother, to Alice. It was about ammunition.

The phone on Harrison's desk rang. He answered, his voice curt. After a moment, he hung up. "That was the Davenport estate manager. The wedding is in three days."

"Good," Ivy said, turning to leave.

"We'll have all of Alice's things sent to your room," Sylvia offered, a pathetic attempt at a truce.

Ivy paused at the door, her back to them. "Don't bother. I'll get them myself."

She walked out, leaving them to bicker over the cost of her obedience. She closed her bedroom door, the solid click of the lock shutting out the world. The contract was a key. The wedding was a door. And she was about to walk right into the heart of the enemy's territory.
