Chapter 3

In the quiet of her room, Ivy pulled a small, framed photograph from her duffel bag. It was of her and Alice, years ago, two teenagers with identical grins, arms slung around each other. A wave of grief, sharp and cold, washed over her. She remembered Alice's last phone call, her voice tight with panic. "Ivy, stay away from the Davenports! Promise me!"

The promise had been broken. The war had just begun.

Ivy pushed the photo aside and retrieved a laptop from her bag. It looked like a standard machine, but it was a ghost, custom-built and untraceable. She powered it on, the screen glowing to life with lines of code before settling on a stark, encrypted interface. A single letter lit up in the corner: K.

Her fingers flew across the keyboard, a silent, staccato rhythm.

`K: Milo. I need everything on Jeffrey Davenport. Medical, sealed.`

A reply came back almost instantly.

`M: On it. He's a ghost, K. But I'll find something.`

Minutes later, a file appeared. Ivy's eyes scanned the documents. The diagnosis was there, confirmed by a dozen top specialists: a rare, degenerative neurotoxin. Prognosis: less than a year. It was all too perfect, too clean.

She shut the laptop, a new resolve hardening her features. She changed out of her travel clothes and into a pair of black cargo pants, a fitted black shirt, and combat boots. She was a shadow, ready to hunt.

Her car, a deceptively nondescript muscle car with a monster engine, ate up the miles of coastal highway. The sun was setting, casting long shadows as she pulled over near the cliff where Alice's car had been found. The air was heavy with the smell of salt and sorrow.

She moved with purpose, her eyes scanning the ground, ignoring the main area the police would have scoured. Her training had taught her to look where others didn't. At the edge of the cliff, tucked away in a dense thicket of bushes that overlooked the crashing waves, something glinted.

Ivy knelt, her fingers brushing away the dirt. It was a diamond hair clip. A birthday gift she'd given Alice. Her heart seized. Alice would never have been careless with this. It wasn't dropped. It was torn away.

As her fingers closed around the cold metal, a voice cut through the sound of the wind. It was low, raspy with weakness, but held an undeniable core of command.

"What are you looking for?"

Ivy's body went rigid. She pocketed the clip and rose, turning in one fluid motion.

He was about twenty feet away. A man in a wheelchair, a thick cashmere blanket covering his lap. His face was pale, almost translucent in the fading light, but his eyes... his eyes were a startling, sharp gray, and they were fixed on her with an unnerving intensity. A tall, imposing man stood behind the wheelchair, his hands clasped, radiating quiet competence.

This was Jeffrey Davenport.

The man behind the wheelchair, who Ivy presumed was his assistant, took a step forward. "Ma'am, this is private property." He moved to grab her arm.

It was a mistake. Ivy shifted her weight, letting his momentum carry him past her. Her hand shot out, not to strike, but to intercept. She caught his wrist, her fingers finding the pressure point with practiced ease. The big man grunted, his arm going numb, his eyes wide with surprise.

Ivy held him there for a beat, her gaze never leaving the man in the wheelchair.

"Who are you?" Jeffrey Davenport asked again, his voice unchanged, as if watching his bodyguard be effortlessly neutralized was a common occurrence.

Ivy released the assistant, who stumbled back, shaking his wrist. She took a step forward, the wind whipping a strand of dark hair across her face.

"I could ask you the same thing," she said, her voice as cold as the ocean spray. She feigned ignorance, testing him, watching for any flicker of recognition, any hint of a lie. He was either here to mourn, or he was here to clean up. And she was going to find out which.
