Chapter 4

"Your file has been successfully submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission."

The green text replaced the frozen loading circle on my monitor. I stared at the confirmation number generated at the bottom of the screen.

"The portal just accepted the file," I said into the phone.

"I see the confirmation on my end," Dana replied. "Submission ID is logged in our vault. Are you heading to the party now?"

"Yes."

"Stick to the plan, Mara. Let them talk. Let them celebrate."

"I will."

Two hours later, I stood at the entrance of the Four Seasons ballroom. The heavy oak doors were propped open, spilling golden light and the dull roar of hundreds of voices into the lobby.

"Name, please?" the hostess asked, tapping her tablet with a stylus.

"Mara Quinn," I said.

She scrolled down her screen. Her brow furrowed slightly before smoothing out into a practiced customer service expression. "Ah, Mrs. Quinn. You are at Table 42. Family Seating."

"Where is that?"

"Just past the kitchen doors, ma'am. Keep walking until you see the service station with the spare linens."

I walked past her, stepping into the massive ballroom. The room buzzed with tech executives, venture capitalists, and reporters. Flashbulbs snapped near the center of the room where the executive team held court.

"Adrian requested you wear the navy dress," a voice said from behind me.

I turned. Theo stood near a towering ice sculpture of the company logo, adjusting his silk tie. His gaze dragged over my charcoal gray tailored suit.

"The suit fits better," I replied, keeping my tone flat.

"Adrian wanted a unified family image for the press tonight," Theo said, stepping into my path. He plucked two glasses of champagne from a passing waiter's tray and offered one to me.

"I am sitting at Table 42, Theo. There are no cameras by the kitchen doors."

"You are missing a historic night, Mara. The stock closed up thirty percent."

I took the glass by the stem. "Congratulations."

"How are things at home?" Theo asked. He flashed a sympathetic smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Is Eli enjoying the new private school? I know being a full-time mom is demanding."

I didn't answer. I just held his gaze, a polite, empty smile fixed on my face.

"We really appreciate you holding down the fort," Theo added, his voice faltering slightly as the silence stretched.

I kept smiling. I didn't nod. I didn't speak. I let the awkwardness hang in the air between us, heavy and suffocating.

Theo shifted his weight from his left foot to his right. The corners of his mouth twitched downward. He cleared his throat loudly.

"Right. Well, enjoy your night," he muttered. He spun around and hurried toward the VIP section near the stage.

I continued my walk toward the back of the room. A cluster of older men in expensive suits blocked the aisle. They stood in a tight circle around Sloane. She wore a backless silver gown, holding a microphone pack in one hand and a martini in the other.

"The key to our scaling speed is the architecture," Sloane told the group, her voice projecting over the background music.

"How did you manage the latency issues during the beta phase?" a grey-haired investor asked.

"It was simple," Sloane said, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder. "I just compiled the SQL database directly into the HTML front-end nodes. That bypassed the server lag entirely."

"So you didn't need a middleware layer?" another man asked, leaning in.

"Exactly," Sloane beamed. "Middleware is outdated. I coded a direct pipeline."

My fingers tightened around the stem of my champagne glass.

You cannot compile a structured query language database into a hypertext markup language node. It was technological gibberish. A first-year computer science student would have laughed her out of the room.

"The machine learning aspect was tricky," Sloane continued, oblivious to her own nonsense. "I had to manually adjust the neural weights using a basic binary sort."

"A binary sort on a neural network?" the grey-haired investor asked.

"It saves processing power," Sloane lied smoothly.

I took a step back, out of their direct line of sight. A binary sort organizes simple lists. It has absolutely zero application in neural network weight adjustment. She was just throwing out tech buzzwords she had memorized from a glossary.

"Brilliant," the grey-haired man said, raising his glass to her. "Truly innovative work, Sloane."

I didn't correct her. I didn't expose the fraud right there in the aisle. I just watched Sloane soak up the praise for a system she didn't even understand. She was building her own trap, word by word, and I was perfectly content to let her keep digging.

A microphone screeched from the front of the room. The chatter died down instantly.

Adrian stood at the center of the stage. The overhead spotlight caught the sharp angles of his jaw. He tapped the microphone twice.

"Thank you all for being here," Adrian said. His voice echoed through the massive speakers, smooth and commanding. "Today is a milestone. But I want to talk about day one."

I finally reached Table 42. I pulled out a chair and sat down. The seat cushion was cold. The swinging doors to the kitchen flapped open, letting out the smell of dish soap and roasted garlic.

"Seven years ago, I sat in a freezing garage," Adrian said, pacing slowly across the stage. "I had a cheap laptop, a pot of coffee, and a vision."

"He is such a visionary," a woman at the next table whispered to her husband.

"I wrote the first lines of the predictive algorithm by myself," Adrian continued, his voice dropping to a humble register. "People told me it was impossible. They said the market wasn't ready. But I knew what I was building."

He paused for dramatic effect. The crowd erupted into applause.

He didn't just steal the company equity. He stole my history. He took the freezing concrete floor, the numb fingers, the early morning timestamps, and claimed them as his own.

"We didn't have venture capital back then," Adrian said, projecting over the fading applause. "I maxed out my credit cards. I missed holidays. I sat on that concrete floor until my fingers went numb, typing out the architecture that just made history on the Nasdaq."

I lowered my hand. I set the untouched champagne glass down on a silver tray left by a busboy. The condensation dripped down the crystal stem, pooling at the base. I lifted the glass slightly, leaving a perfectly round water mark on the crisp white linen tablecloth.

"I couldn't have done it without my incredible team," Adrian said, raising a fresh glass of champagne toward the crowd. "To the future of Quinn Neural Networks."

My phone vibrated against my thigh.

I slipped it out of my suit pocket and glanced at the screen under the edge of the table.

A text from Dana illuminated the dark display.

The underwriter received the materials. Someone will contact you for verification before the market opens tomorrow.

I locked the screen and slid the phone back into my pocket. I lifted my chin and looked straight ahead toward the stage.

Adrian turned his head. His eyes scanned the massive room, cutting through the crowd, past the investors and the reporters, until they landed directly on Table 42. He found me sitting in the shadows.

He smiled, raising his glass directly at me.
