Chapter 5

"And while we celebrate the technology, we must also acknowledge the sacrifices," Adrian said.

His voice dropped to a softer, intimate register, echoing through the massive ballroom speakers. He paced slowly across the center of the stage, the overhead spotlight tracking his movements.

He stopped near the edge of the platform. He kept his champagne flute raised. His eyes locked directly on Table 42.

"To my family," Adrian said, projecting his voice over the silent crowd. "The ones who quietly supported me behind the scenes so I could build this empire. Thank you."

The spotlight did not reach my table, but the heads turned anyway. Hundreds of eyes shifted toward the shadows near the kitchen swinging doors. Investors in tailored suits and tech journalists with press badges turned their bodies, searching for the dutiful wife.

I pushed my chair back. The metal legs scraped against the hardwood floor.

I stood up. I raised my empty hands and brought them together.

A polite, measured rhythm. My posture remained perfectly straight. I offered a serene, practiced smile to the nearest photographer.

"She looks so proud," a woman at the adjacent table murmured to her husband.

"She should be," the man replied, adjusting his silk tie. "He gave her everything."

On stage, Sloane clapped along, her silver gown catching the stage lights. Theo stood beside her, nodding approvingly at my compliance. They all thought I was broken. They thought the holding agreement and the public humiliation had stripped away my spine.

I kept clapping until the applause died down and Adrian lowered his glass. I did not break eye contact with my husband. I let him see the flawless, empty smile plastered across my face.

Two hours later, the ballroom emptied into the grand foyer. Valets rushed through the revolving glass doors, shouting out ticket numbers into the crisp night air.

I stood near the mahogany coat check counter, holding a plastic numbered tag.

A heavy hand gripped my elbow.

"You played your part well tonight."

I turned. Adrian stood inches away. He smelled of expensive champagne and stale adrenaline. His grip tightened on my arm, his fingers pressing into the fabric of my suit jacket.

"I clapped when instructed," I said, keeping my voice low. "Can I go home now?"

"Not until we are clear on the rules moving forward," Adrian said. He stepped closer, forcing me to lean back against the wooden counter. "The media will be digging into our background this week. They love a founder origin story. Forbes wants a feature on my early struggles."

"They already have your origin story, Adrian," I replied. "You told them all about your freezing garage. You painted a very vivid picture."

His jaw hardened. A muscle ticked beneath his ear. "Don't get smart with me, Mara. We are playing in the big leagues now. You think this is a game?"

"I think the stock closed up thirty percent," I said, matching his quiet intensity. "You got what you wanted."

"I got what we needed. What this family needed."

"Don't pretend this was for us. You scrubbed my name from the company history, Adrian. You gave my title to Sloane."

"Sloane is marketable," he shot back, his eyes darting around the lobby to ensure no one was listening. "Wall Street likes a young, aggressive female engineer. It tests well with the venture capital funds."

"She doesn't know how the algorithm works," I said. "She told an investor she used a binary sort on a neural network."

Adrian waved his free hand, dismissing the technicality. "She doesn't need to know how it works. She just needs to sell it. And you need to stay out of her way. If a reporter corners you outside the house, you smile and talk about Eli. You talk about private school and charity galas. You do not mention the early days. You do not mention the old code."

I pulled my arm out of his grasp. "Are you worried I might contradict your timeline?"

"I am worried about our son," Adrian snapped.

The mask slipped for a fraction of a second, revealing the cold, calculating panic underneath.

"Eli goes to a top-tier school now," Adrian continued, lowering his voice to a harsh whisper. "He has a target on his back. If you start spouting delusional claims about being the real genius behind Quinn Neural Networks, the press will eat you alive. They will call you a bitter, jealous housewife seeking attention."

He pointed a finger at my chest. "Think about how that affects Eli. Do you want his classmates reading articles about his mother losing her mind?"

My throat constricted.

Seven years ago. The garage was fifty degrees. I hit the final keystroke on the genesis commit at 3:47 in the morning, my fingers stiff and aching from ten hours of uninterrupted typing. Adrian walked in holding a mug of hot milk. He set it next to my keyboard, rubbing my frozen shoulders. You did it, he had whispered into my hair. Rest now. I have got the company from here.

I pushed the memory down. I buried the hot milk, the freezing garage, and the man I thought I married deep into the pit of my stomach.

He was using Eli as a shield. He thought invoking our son's name would terrify me into submission. He thought he held all the cards.

I knew the regulatory board already had the unedited logs. I knew the whistleblower complaint was sitting on a federal agent's desk. The urge to laugh clawed at my throat, sharp and metallic.

I just stared at him.

"Did you hear me, Mara?" Adrian demanded, leaning closer. "You stay quiet."

"I didn't say anything," I replied.

The coat check attendant appeared, draping my wool trench across the counter. I picked it up and slipped it over my shoulders. I turned my back on my husband.

My shoes hit the marble floor in a steady, unbroken rhythm as I walked out the glass doors. I did not look back.

Forty minutes later, I walked through the front door of our house.

The babysitter was asleep on the living room sofa. I paid her in cash, locked the deadbolt behind her, and walked up the carpeted stairs.

I stopped at Eli's bedroom. The door was cracked open. I pushed it wide enough to see his small form tangled in the superhero bedsheets. His chest rose and fell in a steady rhythm.

Adrian wanted to use this boy as a weapon against me. He wanted to twist my love for my son into a cage.

I closed the door quietly. I walked down the hall and entered my home office.

I did not turn on the overhead lights. I sat down at my glass desk in the dark.

I opened my laptop. The screen illuminated the room, casting a pale blue glow over the scattered photocopies of the holding agreement.

I opened my secure browser and navigated to the encrypted proton mail account. The inbox sat empty.

I checked the clock in the corner of the screen. 11:45 PM.

Dana said the underwriter received the materials. She said someone would reach out before the market opened.

I rested my hands on the keyboard. My pulse hammered against my ribs, a rapid, frantic drumbeat. I hit the refresh icon.

The screen flashed white.

A new message appeared at the top of the queue. The red flag icon indicated high priority.

Sender: Compliance Division, Underwriting Board.

Subject: Urgent verification request regarding founder statements in the IPO prospectus.

I moved the cursor and clicked the bold text.

The email contained no pleasantries. No corporate greetings. No legal disclaimers. It was a direct, encrypted inquiry triggered by the file I uploaded hours ago.

I leaned closer to the monitor. I read the single sentence out loud to the empty room.

Who is the true primary author of this company?
