Chapter 3

I dragged the browser window to the left side of my monitor. On the right, I opened the Internet Archive tool.

"Let's see exactly what you erased," I muttered to the empty room.

I typed the company URL into the search bar and hit enter. I picked up my phone and hit the speed dial for my attorney.

"Dana," I said, putting the call on speakerphone. "Open your web browser."

"I am in the middle of drafting the injunction," Dana replied, the sound of shuffling papers coming through the line.

"Pause the draft. Go to the company website."

"Okay. I am on the main landing page. The stock ticker is flashing at the top. Up twenty-two percent."

"Click the 'Our Story' tab. Scroll down to the founders section."

"I see it," Dana said. "Adrian Quinn, Chief Executive Officer. Sloane Vance, Chief Technology Officer."

"Now, open the Wayback Machine," I instructed, my eyes fixed on my own screen. "Type in the URL and go back exactly four years. October twelfth."

Silence stretched for a few seconds, broken only by the rapid clicking of Dana's keyboard.

"Loading the snapshot now," she said. A sharp exhale followed. "Wow."

"Read it to me."

"Mara Quinn," Dana read, her tone shifting to a sharp, legal cadence. "Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer. Lead Architect of the QNN Predictive Algorithm."

"And the current site?"

"Adrian Quinn, Visionary CEO. Sloane Vance, Co-Founder and CTO." Dana paused. "They didn't just remove your title, Mara. They scrubbed your entire existence from the company history."

"Look at Sloane's profile on the current page," I said, gripping the edge of the glass desk.

"It says she built the original neural network in her garage."

"My garage," I corrected. "She copied my biography word for word and slapped her name on it."

"Take a screenshot of both pages. Capture the date stamps on your desktop clock."

"Already done," I said, dragging the image files into our secure chat. "Look at the bottom of the page. The timeline."

"Scrolling down now," Dana said. "Okay, the timeline says the company was founded in 2018."

"When did we actually incorporate?"

"2016," Dana replied quickly. "I filed the paperwork myself."

"They shifted the entire timeline forward by two years. They erased the garage years completely. Because if they acknowledge 2016, they have to acknowledge me."

"This is blatant," Dana muttered. "Adrian is usually more careful than this."

"He is arrogant," I countered. "He thinks because I signed that holding agreement while I was pregnant, I surrendered my right to challenge him. He thinks I am too focused on Eli to notice a website update."

"Well, he is wrong. I am saving these screenshots to the secure server now. When the investigators look at this, they will see a clear, documented timeline of corporate fraud."

"Keep building the file," I said.

I ended the call.

The heavy oak front door groaned open downstairs.

"Mom!" Eli's voice echoed through the foyer.

I minimized the browser windows and grabbed the crumpled private school admission form from my desk. I walked out of my office and stood at the top of the stairs.

Eli stood on the welcome mat, struggling to pull his arms out of his oversized winter coat. His superhero backpack sat on the floor beside him.

"Hey, buddy," I called out, walking down the steps. "How was school?"

"Fine," he muttered. He finally yanked his arm free and dropped the coat onto the bench.

I crouched down in front of him, bringing my eyes level with his. I held up the wrinkled piece of paper.

"Eli, we need to talk about this form."

His eyes darted to the paper, then down to his untied sneakers. He kicked the toe of his shoe against the hardwood floor. "Did I spell it wrong?"

"No," I said, keeping my tone perfectly even. "You spelled the word perfectly. But I want to know why you chose to write 'unemployed' on this line."

Eli shrank back. His small shoulders hunched up toward his ears. "Daddy told me to."

"When did Daddy tell you that?"

"Yesterday morning. Before he left for his big TV thing."

"What exact words did Daddy use, Eli?"

My son bit his bottom lip. He looked terrified, as if he had broken a rule he didn't quite understand. "He said you don't go to an office. He said Sloane does all the computer work now. So, since you don't have a job, 'unemployed' is the right word to tell the school people."

My chest tightened. I stared at the blocky, uneven letters my son had pressed into the paper. The gray lead was smudged at the edges, a physical mark of Adrian's manipulation.

"Daddy said I had to tell the truth," Eli whispered, his eyes wide and anxious. "Did I do something bad?"

"No, sweetie," I said. "You didn't do anything bad."

I reached out and brushed a stray piece of pink eraser shaving off the page. My index finger rested on the letter 'U'. I pressed down, feeling the slight indentation of his pencil mark against the pad of my finger. I held it there for half a second.

Unemployed.

A heavy, suffocating weight settled in my throat. Adrian wasn't satisfied with stealing my equity. He needed to ensure my own child viewed me as worthless.

I pulled my hand away from the paper.

I didn't launch into a defense of my career. I didn't tell my six-year-old son that I wrote the code that paid for his private school, his clothes, and the roof over his head.

I just reached out and patted his messy brown hair.

"Go wash your hands," I said, forcing a small smile. "Snack time is in five minutes."

Eli nodded and sprinted toward the kitchen, the tension instantly vanishing from his small frame.

I stood up and walked back to my office. I picked up my phone from the charging pad and opened the messaging app. I attached the high-resolution screenshots of the founder pages and forwarded them to Dana's secure number.

Before I could set the phone down, a new text bubble popped up at the top of the screen.

Adrian.

I tapped the notification.

The IPO celebration party is at eight tonight. Four Seasons ballroom.

Another message appeared a second later.

Wear the navy dress. You are attending in a family capacity.

And then a third.

Smile for the cameras, support the team, and do not say anything out of line to the press. Sloane is the face of the tech department today. Don't ruin this for us.

I stared at the glowing letters on the glass screen.

Family capacity.

Not founder. Not creator. Not the woman who spent seven years building the architecture that made him a billionaire. Just the quiet wife, summoned to stand in the shadows of his spotlight. He wanted me there as a prop. A silent accessory to validate his success.

The navy dress was conservative. High neckline, long sleeves. It was the dress I wore to parent-teacher conferences. He was styling me, ensuring I looked exactly like the domestic housewife he claimed I was.

I tapped the keyboard icon.

Are you sure you want me there?

I deleted it.

I built this company.

I deleted that, too.

Arguing with him over text would achieve nothing. It would only tip him off. He needed to believe I was defeated. He needed to see me standing in the corner of that ballroom, wearing the boring navy dress, completely subdued.

I typed two words.

I'll go.

I hit send.

I sat back down at my desk and pulled my laptop closer. I opened the encrypted folder on my desktop. Inside sat the formal SEC whistleblower complaint Dana had drafted, along with the supporting evidence files.

I clicked the secure upload portal for the regulatory agency. The screen prompted me to attach the primary evidence document.

I dragged the file into the browser window.

The blue progress bar appeared, sliding rapidly across the screen. Ten percent. Fifty percent. Eighty percent.

It hit ninety-nine percent.

Then, the bar froze.

The loading circle spun endlessly next to the bold text of the file name: `QNN_Equity_Structure.pdf`.
