Chapter 2

My cell phone buzzed against the glass desk, vibrating over the dial tone from seconds ago. Dana's caller ID flashed on the screen.

I swiped to answer. "Did you get it?"

"The courier just dropped the drive on my desk," Dana said, her voice crisp over the speaker. "I ran the preliminary hash check. Your cryptographic proofs are intact."

"And the timestamps?" I asked, leaning forward in my ergonomic chair.

"Verified. They predate the corporate formation by four full months. The data matches the original IP logs perfectly."

"Keep it in the firm's vault," I said. "Do not let anyone from Quinn Neural Networks know you have it. If Adrian or his lawyers reach out regarding my severance package, you tell them nothing."

"Understood. We are ready when you are. Do you want me to draft the initial filing?"

"Not yet," I said. "I need one more piece of the puzzle first to prove intent."

I ended the call and tossed the phone onto the charging pad.

My eyes dropped to the center of my desk. A photocopy of the equity holding agreement lay flat under the harsh overhead light.

I dragged my index finger across the bottom right corner. My signature slanted downward, the letters cramped and uneven. I remembered the exact physical ache of writing those letters. I had been five months pregnant with Eli. My joints had swollen so badly that morning I had to trap my wedding ring in a velvet box to keep it from cutting off my circulation.

"It's just a temporary measure, Mara," Theo had said, standing over me in the kitchen, tapping a silver pen against the marble counter. "Once the Series B clears, we reverse the transfer. You get all thirty-four percent back."

"Why can't we just disclose my pregnancy to the board?" I had asked him, holding the pen above the dotted line.

"Because they want a CEO and CTO who can work ninety-hour weeks," Adrian had chimed in, pressing a warm kiss to my temple. "The venture capitalists are old school. They see a pregnant founder and they panic about timelines. Just sign it, honey. It protects us all."

Six years. I had swallowed that lie for six years.

I pulled up the contact list on my laptop and clicked Priya's name. She was one of the first three engineers I hired, back when our office was a damp room above a bowling alley.

The line rang four times before she picked up.

"Mara?" Priya asked over the heavy thump of bass music in the background. "Is everything okay? You didn't come to the bell-ringing ceremony."

"I need a favor," I said. "Are you at your desk?"

"No, I'm down in the lobby. Adrian rented out the entire ground floor for the IPO party. They are popping champagne and handing out bonus checks."

"Go back upstairs to your terminal," I said.

"Right now?"

"Right now, Priya. Please."

A heavy sigh filtered through the speaker, followed by the muffled sound of a door closing. The bass music faded into a dull hum.

"Okay, I'm in the stairwell," Priya said. "What is going on? You sound intense."

"I need you to log into the legacy repository."

"The old garage builds? Nobody touches those anymore. The new architecture handles all the live traffic."

"Just pull up the genesis commit," I said, keeping my tone flat. "Timestamp 3:47 AM, seven years ago. Read the author field to me."

I heard the rhythmic tap of her footsteps climbing the stairs, then the squeak of a heavy fire door pulling open.

"Give me a second," Priya said. "I have to bypass the new security protocols. Sloane implemented a two-factor authentication for all legacy files last month."

"Why would she lock down dead code?"

"She said it was an audit requirement for the IPO," Priya muttered. "Hang on. You still have your original admin key?"

"I wrote the key," I replied.

Keys clattered through the phone. The rapid strike of mechanical switches echoed in my quiet office.

"Okay, I am in the root directory," Priya said. "Locating the genesis commit."

Silence stretched between us. I pressed my knuckles against the cold edge of my desk. My joints popped in the quiet room.

"Mara," Priya whispered. The casual tone had vanished from her voice.

"What does it say?"

"Someone altered the metadata."

"When?"

"Last Thursday. At eleven at night."

"Who is listed as the author of the initial architecture?" I asked, though the answer was already burning in my chest.

"Sloane," Priya said. "The system logs show a manual overwrite of the creator tag. They wiped your name completely."

My knuckles turned white against the glass. The anger did not explode; it settled into my stomach like cold iron.

They had not just stolen my company. They had committed federal securities fraud right before taking the company public. Lying to the SEC about the origin of the core intellectual property was a felony.

"Did they scrub the backup servers too?" I asked.

"I am checking the secondary nodes now," Priya said, her keyboard clicking faster. "This is bad, Mara. If the regulatory board finds out the core IP was fraudulently reassigned before the S-1 filing..."

"They will find out," I said. "Adrian signed the S-1 prospectus swearing he and Sloane developed the neural network. That makes this a federal crime."

"Mara, I could go to jail just for accessing this without authorization."

"You won't. You have whistleblower protection. Just get me the logs."

The first block of my counterattack was locked into place. I reached out and grabbed the messy pile of holding agreement photocopies.

I aligned the top edges of the papers. I separated them into three neat, chronological stacks. The first stack represented my trust. The second stack represented my blindness. The third stack represented my execution. I pushed the third stack to the center of the desk.

Clean, precise movements. No tears. No screaming.

"Priya, export those system logs to an encrypted file," I ordered. "Send them to my secure proton mail."

"I'm trying," Priya said, her voice tight. "But the firewall is flagging the export."

"Route it through the old testing server. They never monitor port eighty-eight."

The typing on the other end stopped.

"Priya?"

"Someone is pinging the server," she whispered.

"What do you mean?"

"Another user just initiated a query on the legacy table. They are watching my terminal access."

"Disconnect from the network," I said, leaning closer to the phone. "Pull the ethernet cable if you have to."

"I can't. The override is coming from an executive account. It's locking my screen."

A sharp mechanical click echoed through the phone. It sounded like a heavy office door swinging open on Priya's end.

"Sloane is here," Priya hissed.

The line went dead.

I stared at the black screen of my phone. The dial tone buzzed in the quiet room, loud and grating.

I dropped the phone and grabbed my mouse. On my secondary monitor, a hidden terminal window I wrote six years ago flashed to life. A single line of green text scrolled across the black background, displaying a live login prompt accessing the repository backend.
