Chapter 3

"Take it before he comes back down."

Iris shoved the cold metal into my palm. The sharp edges of the heavy brass bit into my skin. I didn't need to look at the engraving to know the letters A.H. were stamped near the bow. My father's initials.

"You went into my study," I whispered. My fingers closed tight over the key, the metal warming against my palm.

"The night of the crash," my sister replied. She kept her voice low, her eyes darting toward the ceiling vent connecting to the kitchen above. "Damon called me from the highway. He sounded too calm. I knew something was wrong. I drove to your house before the police arrived and emptied your hidden drawer."

"He didn't change the alarm codes?"

"He disabled the system entirely," Iris said, a bitter edge creeping into her tone. "He wanted the cops to think you stormed out in a blind rage and left the doors unlocked. It gave me exactly ten minutes to get in and out."

She unzipped her oversized gray sweatshirt. From the inner pocket, she pulled out a thick, folded manila envelope and pushed it into my hands.

"Theo transferred the trust voting rights at eleven that night," Iris continued, pointing at the envelope. "I saw the confirmation alert pop up on Damon's iPad while he was pouring Margot a drink upstairs. They pushed the paperwork through while the fire department was still putting out your car."

Theo. Damon's business partner. The two of them had orchestrated the financial coup the exact moment my supposed corpse was roasting in the ravine.

I knelt on the concrete, ignoring the damp cold seeping through my cheap jeans. I tore the envelope open.

The harsh yellow bulb above us cast a sickly glow over the thick parchment. I flipped past the standard legal jargon straight to the ownership page of the forty-million-dollar trust.

My fingertip pressed against the blue ink of my own signature at the bottom right corner.

"Damon thinks burning you alive makes his management authorization permanent," Iris muttered, crouching beside me. "He told Margot the money clears by Friday. He plans to wire the funds offshore the second he gets the death certificate."

"Damon is a hedge fund manager, not a lawyer," I corrected, keeping my tone flat. "He thinks controlling the accounts means he owns the principal."

"Doesn't it?"

"No." I traced the embossed seal next to my name. "The management agreement lets him trade the assets. He can buy and sell stock. But this document right here is the ownership deed. Without it, he can't liquidate a single cent of the forty million. He can look at the numbers on a screen, but he can't cash out."

"So he murdered a woman for nothing."

"He murdered a woman because he got greedy," I said. "And because he thought I was stupid."

A sharp scrape sounded from the floorboards above us.

Iris flinched, her shoulders hiking up toward her ears. She pressed her back against the storage rack, knocking a heavy steel wrench off the shelf.

I caught the tool mid-air before it could hit the ground.

Silence stretched between us. Upstairs, footsteps padded across the kitchen tile, moving away from the garage door.

I set the wrench down softly on a stack of cardboard boxes. My pulse held steady. The panic that had choked me in the ravine was gone, replaced by a cold, hollow clarity.

"They want Vivienne Hale dead," I told my sister. "So we let her stay dead."

Iris turned her head, staring at me as if I were a stranger. "Viv, if you stay dead, Damon walks free. He gets the house. He gets Margot. He gets away with murder. We need to go to the police right now."

"And tell them what?" I challenged, standing up. "That my husband killed a blonde woman and put her in my car? Damon will say I faked my own death to frame him. He has Margot as a witness. He has the police eating out of his hand. They would arrest me for insurance fraud before they ever looked at him."

"Then what do we do?" Iris demanded. "Hide in garages for the rest of our lives?"

"No. We take the forty million. And we make him watch it disappear."

I folded the heavy parchment and slid it inside my jacket, right next to my dental records.

"He gave Margot my pearls," I said, adjusting the collar of my jacket.

"I saw," Iris replied, her expression tightening. "She was parading around the kitchen in them. She thinks she won."

"Margot always wanted my life. Now she thinks she has it." I met my sister's gaze. "But she just inherited a dead woman's problems."

"How are you going to stop them?"

"Damon needs a coroner to sign a death certificate based on those charred remains," I explained. "But a burned body with no face requires secondary confirmation."

"Dental records," Iris whispered, catching on.

"Exactly. I already have my real dental molds ready to mail to the medical examiner anonymously. Once those arrive, the discrepancy will flag the body. The local coroner won't touch it. They will mandate an outside forensic expert to review the jawbone."

"And you want to be that expert."

"I am a licensed dentist. I know how to read a radiograph, and I know how to manipulate a post-mortem report."

"You'll have to walk right into the morgue," Iris argued, her hands balling into fists. "There are cameras. Police officers. What if Damon shows up to identify the body again?"

"A medical mask, a face shield, and a heavy surgical gown cover everything." I gripped her shoulder, forcing her to look at me. "Damon thinks I'm a victim. He expects me to run, to hide, or to cry to the police. He will never look at a forensic specialist in a sterile room and see his dead wife."

"He's dangerous, Viv. If he recognizes your voice."

"I won't speak to him. I will speak to the corpse."

Iris swallowed hard. The tension in her jaw slowly unspooled, replaced by a grim determination.

"You really think you can bluff your way into a police investigation?" she asked.

"I don't have to bluff. I have the credentials. I just need an invitation."

Iris reached into her jeans pocket and pulled out her phone.

The screen glowed brightly in the dim garage, casting a pale blue light across her face.

"Then you need to see this right now," she said.

She tapped the screen and slid the device into my hand.

It was an internal email forwarded from a contact at the county medical examiner's office.

URGENT: Outside Forensic Odontologist Required for Unidentified Jane Doe. High-Profile Case. Immediate Review Necessary.

At the bottom of the screen, a glaring red banner flashed above the application portal.
