My Husband Made Me Serve His Pregnant First Love Chapter 1

At nineteen, I packed my unfinished kinesiology books into a moving box and followed Julian Cross to his first real basketball contract.

I moved four cities for him, cooked around every training block, iced his damaged knee, and learned how to make reporters stop calling him a scandal.

Julian used to hold my face and promise that when he finally made it, I would never have to sacrifice again.

Three years later, he was an All-Star and the future Alpha of the Cross family.

I was still the wife who knew where his knee brace, protein powder, passports, and painkillers were.

Then Chloe Vaughn walked into our house with an ultrasound and a DNA report saying her baby was Julian's.

Julian pulled out a chair for her and handed me a prenatal nutrition sheet.

“Chloe is staying here until the baby is born.”

“And what exactly do you expect me to do?”

“Take care of her, Eva.”

“You already know how to take care of this family.”

I carried Julian's post-game dinner out of the kitchen, balancing two plates the way I had done hundreds of times before.

Baked chicken. Quinoa. Steamed asparagus. Low sodium, high protein, measured down to the gram because Julian could feel a two-pound fluctuation in his knees after a hard week on the road.

Then I stopped beside the dining table.

There were three place settings.

A third plate. A third fork. A third water glass.

On the chair to the right of mine sat a gray lumbar cushion I had never seen before.

For three years, this table had been ours.

I set the tray down slowly.

Three years ago, Julian Cross had still been fighting for minutes off the bench. I had been one semester from completing the clinical track of my kinesiology degree when his first trade came through. He had asked me to come with him. I had packed my textbooks into a cardboard box and promised myself I would return to school once his career settled.

It never settled.

Four cities followed. Four apartments, then this house. Every move, I searched for the things Julian needed before I searched for anything I wanted: training facilities, orthopedic specialists, grocery stores with reliable organic produce, pharmacies open after midnight.

Two summers ago, when a torn meniscus nearly ended his career, the franchise doctors gave him a recovery plan and a warning not to rush. I built the schedule that made the plan livable. I tracked his pain after every workout, adjusted his meals, recorded swelling, watched his gait, and made him stop on the days his pride told him to keep going.

The blue binder that held those notes still sat in the top drawer of the kitchen island.

Footsteps sounded behind me.

Julian entered in his black team jacket, six-foot-five and broad enough to make the doorway look narrow. He was more than a starting forward now. He was the face of the franchise, a Cross Pack Alpha heir, and one of the most marketable players in the league.

He did not look at dinner.

He dropped a glossy pamphlet on top of the weekly menu I had written by hand.

Pregnancy Nutrition Guide.

"Make an extra portion tonight," he said.

I stared at the words on the cover. "For who?"

The doorbell rang.

Julian walked away before answering me.

A cold pressure formed beneath my ribs as I followed him into the foyer. He opened the front door.

A woman stood on the porch.

She was small, blond, and wrapped in an oversized beige coat despite the mild evening. She carried no suitcase. No overnight bag.

Only a black-and-white ultrasound printout and a folded laboratory report.

Julian stepped aside. "Eva, this is Chloe Vaughn."

I knew the name. Chloe had been Julian's first serious girlfriend, the woman the Cross Pack once expected him to build a future with before their relationship ended. I had seen old photographs. I had never met her.

I looked from him to her. "Why is she here?"

He guided Chloe toward the living room as though she were expected. She sat carefully on the edge of the leather sofa, one hand folded over the other. Julian stayed standing.

"Two months ago, after the sponsor party in Miami, I got blackout drunk," he said.

I remembered that night. He had come back to the hotel after three in the morning smelling like whiskey and cologne, barely able to take off his shoes. I had gotten him water, put a trash can beside the bed, and spent the next morning telling reporters he had food poisoning.

Julian looked past my shoulder when he spoke again.

"Chloe says we slept together. She had a prenatal paternity screen done. The report says there is a high probability the baby is mine."

For a few seconds, I heard nothing except the low hum of the air conditioner.

"You waited until she was standing in our house to tell me?"

My voice came out quiet enough to scare me.

Julian's jaw flexed. "I wanted confirmation before I said anything."

"And this is confirmation?" I pointed at the folded paper in Chloe's hand. "Did your lawyer review it? Did your doctor? Did you even call the lab?"

"The report is from a private clinic. It looks legitimate."

Looks legitimate.

I almost laughed.

Chloe lowered her eyes. "I can stay at a hotel. I never wanted to cause trouble between you two."

"No," Julian said at once.

He did not look at me before making the decision.

"You're staying here until we know more. The baby needs stability."

I turned to him. "You are moving a woman who says she is pregnant with your child into our home?"

"The guest room is empty."

"That is not an answer."

His expression hardened. "The child is innocent, Eva. Whatever happened between Chloe and me, the baby did not choose it. The Cross Pack has been waiting for an heir for years. I am not taking chances with the pregnancy."

There it was. Not an apology. Not even shame.

A strategy.

I felt something inside me shift.

"Then hire her a nurse," I said. "Rent her an apartment. Put security outside the door. You have enough money to do all three without asking your wife to live with the woman you cheated with."

Julian walked back into the kitchen, picked up the nutrition guide, and pushed it toward me.

"You know diet, supplements, and rehab better than anyone. Just help with her meals until we get through this."

I stared at the pamphlet between us.

"You want me to cook for her?"

"I want you to be reasonable."

"I gave up school to follow your career. I rebuilt your recovery schedule when your knee failed. I have spent three years managing this house around your body, your games, and your future. And your solution to getting another woman pregnant is to add her to my task list?"

A flash of irritation crossed his face.

"Do not turn this into something ugly."

"You brought ugly through the front door."

Chloe rose from the sofa and came into the kitchen. Up close, her expression was carefully fragile.

"I promise I will never try to take your place, Eva," she said.

Then she opened my refrigerator without asking.

She took a magnet from the door, lifted her ultrasound photograph, and pinned it beside our framed wedding picture.

The gesture was small.

It was also deliberate.

I looked at the two images side by side. In one, Julian and I were laughing under white roses after our courthouse ceremony. In the other, a grainy shape floated in darkness.

Chloe rested her fingers over the ultrasound as if claiming the space.

I turned away before either of them could see how deeply it landed.

Hours later, I stood alone in the kitchen.

Julian had thrown away the dinner I made because Chloe said the smell of chicken made her nauseous. Upstairs, furniture scraped across the guest-room floor while he rearranged the room for her.

I opened the kitchen drawer and pulled out my blue binder.

The cover was worn soft at the corners. My handwriting filled nearly every page. Pain scores. Range-of-motion measurements. Meal adjustments. Rehab notes. Three years of work that had never appeared on my resume.

A folded letter slipped from the front pocket and landed at my feet.

Suspension of Studies Confirmation.

I had not looked at it in years.

My phone lit up on the counter.

The email was from Professor Davis, my former academic adviser.

Eva, the readmission window for the sports rehabilitation track closes in forty-eight hours. If you are still thinking about returning, this is the semester to do it. You have enough prior credits to re-enter without starting over.

I read it twice.

From upstairs, Julian called my name.

"Eva! Heat up some milk for Chloe. And bring the prenatal vitamins."

My hand tightened around the phone.

For years, every decision had started with the same question: What does Julian need?

I opened the readmission link.

"Eva!"

I did not answer.

The student portal loaded.

My thumb hovered over the button for one second.

Then I pressed Apply for Readmission.

For the first time in three years, I made a plan that did not include Julian at the center of it.
