Chapter 5

"Here is the mahogany frame," Ben said, hauling a stripped wooden dining chair up the final attic step.

"Set it by the window," I told him, clearing a stack of pattern paper from the edge of my drafting table.

My cell phone buzzed against the wood. The screen lit up with a familiar 555-area code. Mark's corporate office line. Beneath the digits, a red banner flashed with the words Call Intercepted.

Ben wiped his rough hands on his canvas apron. "Trouble?"

"Nothing I need to answer," I said.

I grabbed the device and flipped it face down.

"Good," Ben replied, turning toward the stairs. "I need that cushion done before I lock up the shop tonight."

He disappeared down the stairwell. I shifted my attention to the old Singer sewing machine sitting securely on the work mat. Sunlight streamed through the dirty attic window, illuminating the newly welded iron base.

I sat in the wooden folding chair and pressed my sneaker against the cast-iron pedal. The drive wheel spun to life. The needle punched through the heavy linen, beating a rapid, metallic rhythm into the quiet room.

Five hours of continuous stitching left a dull ache between my shoulder blades. I snipped the final trailing thread with my fabric shears and stood up to stretch my spine.

I lifted the finished piece. It was a flawless recreation of an eighteenth-century lace and linen cushion cover. I walked over to the mahogany chair by the window and stretched the fabric over the bare seat. The linen hugged the curved wooden edges tightly, leaving no loose gaps.

Heavy footsteps echoed on the stairs.

"Are you finished up here?" Ben asked, stepping into the attic.

"Take a look," I said, stepping back from the chair.

Ben crossed the room. He ran his calloused fingertips along the piped edges of the fabric. He crouched down, inspecting the hidden seams beneath the seat rail. His jaw tightened slightly as he studied the corners.

"There is no puckering," Ben murmured, his voice thick with surprise. "The tension is completely uniform."

"I double-welted the corners," I explained. "It prevents the lace from fraying when the wood inevitably expands during the summer humidity."

He stood up and faced me. "The upholstery shop downtown leaves a half-inch gap on every corner. They staple the excess underneath. You hand-stitched the entire underside."

"The original maker did not use staples," I pointed out. "Neither do I."

"This isn't just good, Anna," Ben said, looking from the chair back to me. "This is absolute genius. The client is going to pay double for this level of historical accuracy."

"Just deduct the machine repair cost from my cut," I said.

"No," Ben countered. "The repair was fifty bucks. This cushion just added two hundred dollars of value to the chair. I owe you money."

He pulled a worn leather wallet from his back pocket, extracted three crisp fifty-dollar bills, and held them out.

I stared at the cash. Mark used to scrutinize every grocery receipt I brought home, demanding I return items if I bought name-brand cereal instead of the generic boxes. He controlled every single cent in our marriage.

I reached out and took the bills. "Thank you."

"I have three more parlor chairs downstairs," Ben said. "Can you start them tomorrow?"

"I will be here at eight," I promised.

Ben picked up the mahogany chair and carried it down the stairs. I walked back to the drafting table and flipped my phone over to check the time.

A new notification rested on the lock screen. The caller ID displayed Oakridge High Administration.

The phone vibrated again. I swiped the screen and answered the call.

"Hello?"

"Mrs. Hayes," Principal Warren said, his tone clipped and rigid. "We have a severe situation with Eli."

"Is he hurt?" I asked.

"He is sitting in my office," Davis replied. "He caused a massive disruption in the cafeteria. He threw a plastic tray at a lunch monitor because he didn't have a packed lunch today, and the kitchen ran out of pizza slices."

"Did the tray hit anyone?"

"No, but he is demanding you bring him food right now. He refuses to eat the alternative cafeteria options."

For fifteen years, this exact scenario dictated my entire existence. If Eli forgot his homework, I drove it to his locker. If he disliked the dinner I cooked, I made a separate meal from scratch. Normally, panic would seize my chest. I would grab my keys, speed to the school with a hot meal, and grovel to the staff.

"He is just a boy," Mark would always say. "It is your job to manage him."

"Mrs. Hayes?" Davis prompted. "How soon can you get here? He is being very loud."

"I am not coming," I said.

Silence stretched over the line.

"Excuse me?" Davis finally asked.

"Eli is fifteen years old," I stated firmly. "He is fully capable of eating a school lunch or going hungry for an afternoon. You can handle the disciplinary action as you see fit."

"You are refusing to collect your son?"

"I am refusing to reward a tantrum," I corrected. "Do not call me regarding his lunch again."

I ended the call. I tapped the screen once more, opening the school portal app, and deleted the automated incident report from my inbox. I shoved the phone into my back pocket.

The sun dipped below the horizon, plunging the attic into deep shadows. I folded the remaining linen scraps and placed them into my cedar box. I reached out and snapped the small brass desk lamp off.

A violent pounding echoed from the ground floor.

The heavy glass of the shop front door rattled fiercely in its frame.

"We are closed!" Ben yelled from the main floor.

"Open the damn door!" a man roared outside.

My stomach dropped. I recognized that voice instantly.

I crept toward the front-facing window and peered through the dusty glass.

A sleek silver sedan idled under the yellow glow of the streetlamp. Mark stood on the sidewalk, hammering his fist against the shop door.

"I know my wife is in there!" Mark shouted.

"I don't know who your wife is," Ben shot back, his voice muffled by the thick wood. "Step off the property before I call the cops."

"She is tracking to this exact address!" Mark yelled.

Mark stepped back onto the sidewalk. He held his phone up, the screen casting a harsh blue light across his angry features. He tapped the glass violently, his eyes tracking a blinking dot on his screen.

The family location sharing app. I never turned off the GPS permissions on my phone.

"The pin is right on top of this building," Mark sneered. "Anna! Get out here right now!"

Mark lowered the phone and tilted his head back.

His gaze bypassed the dark second-floor windows and locked directly onto the attic glass.
